Secret Marriage, High-Profile Pampering!
Chapter 1300: Explain Your Relationship with HimChapter 1300: Chapter 1300: Explain Your Relationship with Him
She really didn’t want to go, but her agent had already spoken to the reporters in advance. If she stubbornly refused to show up, not only would it be like slapping her agent in the face, it would also drag her career even further into a slump.
Granted, with the Hughes Family’s influence, even if she couldn’t stay in the entertainment industry, she could still go back and live peacefully as their pampered heiress.
But growing up the way she had—parents divorced, Henry Hughes never giving her much affection—had left her with very little sense of security about relying on her family.
Her dad doted on her only because she was his only daughter at home right now; who knew what things would be like in the future?
The agent hadn’t been wrong about one thing: a career is more reliable than anything else.
In this society, relying on a man or on your family is never as dependable as relying on yourself.
Lorraine Hughes had simply been pushed to a dead end; with no other choice, she forced herself to attend the press conference her agent had arranged for that morning.
When she arrived, reporters from dozens of major domestic media outlets had already gathered on site, all the flashes and camera lenses trained squarely on her.
"Miss Hughes, could you tell us what exactly happened last night? And what is your relationship with Mr. Watt Bennet?"
"Ever since the first time the media reported on you and Mr. Watt Bennet, neither side has ever given any explanation. There were even reports saying Mr. Hughes was already preparing for your engagement to Mr. Watt Bennet. With so many stories in the past, Miss Hughes, you never responded. Why are you only clarifying things today?"
"And about what Miss Hughes was reported to have said to Miss Summer Sutton in the restaurant last night, does Miss Hughes want to explain that again? After all, those words are very easy to misinterpret."
"Miss Sutton’s background is nothing like Miss Hughes’. If Miss Hughes wanted to get rid of her, a Miss Sutton with no one to back her up could probably be driven out with ease, right?"
"Miss Hughes, you deliberately said those things in front of Miss Sutton last night because you wanted to sabotage the relationship between Miss Sutton and Mr. Watt Bennet, didn’t you?"
The reporters’ questions struck straight at the heart of the matter, each one sharper than the last.
Lorraine Hughes was an actress, and acting was what she did best. Usually, when facing a camera, she could control her emotions so well that no one could see through her.
But today, surrounded by so many reporters firing off such blunt questions, Lorraine’s expression started to crack; she couldn’t even keep up the act.
It took her quite a while to steady herself before she finally lifted her face again, slowly and deliberately.
She really wanted to snap back at the reporters, but when she saw the look on her agent’s face beside her, she swallowed everything she’d been about to say.
She drew a slow breath, and, following her agent’s script, explained in a flat tone, "The reason I didn’t explain for such a long time before was because I always felt there was no need. I believe everyone could read between the lines. The reason I’m suddenly explaining now is that last night’s incident has been over‑interpreted by everyone, and things have developed to a point I never anticipated. When I said those words last night, there was actually more I didn’t get to say. That night before, I was indeed with Mr. Watt Bennet, but nothing actually happened that night."
She was only clarifying according to her agent’s instructions, and she didn’t go into much detail.
A man and a woman together for an entire night and "nothing happened"—what exactly she did that night, she didn’t explain.
Nor did she explain why she had ended up with Watt Bennet that night, or what state Watt Bennet had been in at the time.
