Kalon and Josinia appeared in deep shadow at the edge of a wide military camp.

The air on Cupid was cool and dry, much like earth.

The ground under their feet was hard-packed dirt mixed with pale stone.

In front of them stretched a massive camp that went on farther than they could clearly see.

Rows of tents, metal supply containers, weapon racks, vehicle pads, and open training grounds filled the space. Thousands of soldiers moved between the structures in ordered groups.

The soldiers all wore modern combat power armour. The armour was thick and fully plated, covering their bodies from neck to boots. Joints were reinforced. Helmets sat clipped to their belts or held under one arm. Every suit was painted in bright, vibrant colours. Reds, blues, greens, yellows, and oranges.

The people inside the armour looked almost human, but not quite.

None of them had any hair.

Their skin was a ghastly pale white that looked bloodless under the sun lights. Their eyes were completely black, with no white parts and no visible colour.

Set into the centre of each forehead was a smooth pink gem that glowed with a soft, steady light. The gems were all the same shape but slightly different sizes. Some wore more gems than others.

At the far end of the main training field a raised platform had been built from dark metal plates. A tall woman stood in the centre of it.

Kalon’s system told him who it was.

War Commander Daisy.

She wore full black power armour, unlike everyone else. The plates were heavier and thicker than the soldiers’ gear. The design was sharp and clean, with no bright colours at all.

Her pale bald head caught the overhead lights. She had pink gems scattered across her bald head that closed beautifully and made her look like a work of art.

Her completely black eyes moved across the ranks of soldiers standing in formation below the platform.

Beside her stood a much smaller girl. The girl wore pink power armour, which was a colour that only she had. She had the same hairless pale skin, the same pure black eyes, and a smaller pink gem in her forehead, with a few scattered across her cranium.

She looked younger than Daisy. Too young for Kalon to want to pay attention to. She also seemed jolly and childish.

Daisy’s voice carried across the field without any speaker or device.

"Soldiers of Cupid. Listen well."

The entire camp went quiet. Thousands of armoured bodies stood still. Even the background noise of equipment and vehicles dropped away.

"We are almost ready. The scouting phase is finished. The slaves we sent to Veylora have completed their work. They mapped the main paths, the outer defences, the weak points in the leaf-people’s lines, and the places where their priests gather. We know how they move. We know where their power is thinnest. We know where to strike first."

She paused and let the words settle over the ranks.

"Veylora will fall. Their Mother Tree will not save them. When we receive the final order, we will move with full force. This will be the first planet that we conquer in our campaign."

Kalon realised then that his speculations were right.

The berry hunters had come from Cupid. They were slaves used to gather information so that this tyrannical planet could come and conquer them.

He found himself clenching his fist.

A low wave of agreement moved through the soldiers, then died the moment Daisy raised one black-armoured hand.

"There is only one problem that still concerns me."

Her black eyes narrowed. The pink gem in her forehead flared a little brighter.

"A strange human has been seen on Veylora. He uses magic in ways we have not recorded before. He has killed many of our scouts and disrupted several mapping teams. He appears without warning and leaves bodies behind. This human is dangerous. If any unit sees him, you will capture him on sight. Do not kill him if it can be avoided. I want him brought to me alive and intact. Anyone who brings me the human will be rewarded. Anyone who lets him escape or kills him without cause will answer to me directly."

Kalon’s brow raised and Josinia looked at him nervously.

"T-they are talking about you, Kalon..." She whispered.

Daisy lowered her hand and looked across the full width of the formation.

"Until the order to attack is given, you will continue training. Every day. Every unit. No one rests until I say the army is ready. Discipline will be perfect. Strength will be perfect. Formation work will be perfect. When we step onto Veylora, we will not lose. Am I understood?"

A single loud response came back from thousands of voices at once.

"Yes, War Commander!"

Daisy gave a short nod.

"Dismissed. Return to your drills."

The soldiers broke formation in ordered groups and moved back toward the training fields, weapon stations, and vehicle pads. The sound of boots, armour plates, shouted commands, and restarting equipment filled the camp again within seconds.

Daisy turned and spoke a few quiet words to the small girl in the pink suit. The girl nodded once.

The two of them left the platform and walked toward a large black command tent at the centre of the camp.

A small group of guards in armour followed them at a short distance and took up positions outside the tent entrance.

Kalon stayed completely still in the shadows with Josinia.

Neither of them had moved during the entire speech.

Josinia’s purple fingers were tight around his wrist. Her pink eyes were wide as she stared at the thousands of soldiers still moving through the camp.

When Daisy and the pink-suited girl disappeared inside the black command tent, Kalon leaned close to Josinia and spoke in a low voice.

"We wait here. When that woman leaves the command tent and goes to her private chambers, we teleport straight to her."

Josinia turned her head to look at him. Fear was clear on her face. Her voice stayed quiet.

"Kalon... there are so many of them. Thousands. And she is their commander. What if the teleport is noticed the moment we arrive? What if she is much stronger than we expect? What if the small one in pink is still with her?"

"I’ll handle them. If anything goes wrong, my skill can pull us both back to Earth. We won’t stay longer than we need to."

Josinia still looked scared. Her grip on his arm did not loosen. After a few seconds she gave a small nod.

"Alright. I’ll follow your lead. Just... don’t get hurt."

Kalon nodded once. They settled deeper into the shadows between two large supply containers, keeping a clear line of sight on the black command tent, and waited for War Commander Daisy to be alone.
