When Ambrose’s consciousness came flooding back, his eyes didn’t open immediately. They stayed still, only fluttering a bit when a stream of blue light hit his face.

’What the...?’ he groaned mentally. ’What the hell happened? Where am I?’

[You could easily answer both questions and more by opening your eyes.]

’Oh, so I’m not dead,’ he felt the urge to roll his eyes. ’Hello to you too, Aura.’

[Stop being a bag of potatoes and open your eyes. For starters, your men have been worried sick. Also—don’t you want to see your new stats?]

That last question instantly made Ambrose’s eyes widen.

Within a few seconds, he was able to take in his environment by sight and his spatial awareness. It was the Guild’s infirmary—a large room with dozens of beds lined side by side and lit by white fluorescent lights.

It smelt faintly of drugs, disinfectants and something he couldn’t name for the life of him. His bones ached like he’d fallen from a tree and then rolled down a rocky hill.

Oddly specific—but that’s the best description he had.

Then... there was the system’s blue holographic screen. Hovering right in front of him with letters and numbers that quickly drew his interest.

’Whoa...’

With each new stat his eyes skimmed past, Ambrose’s smile grew wider. His attention got hooked to one particular detail—okay, wait. Two actually.

First one... Finally, he’d gotten Viktor’s ice abilities. That was two active Esper abilities in his arsenal! The second one that had him intrigued was the ’charm aura’ skill.

’Hey, Aura...?’

[CharmAura: A passive skill which remains active endlessly without the host expending mental energy or aether.]

[This skill gives the host a natural aura which others would perceive as calming. Effects are especially more pronounced in Espers—even more so for Espers the host is linked with. Other effects include heightened attractiveness to anyone, regardless of power level.]

Ambrose’s mouth parted. ’Why does that sound low-key OP?’

[NOTE: Most people could prove resistant to effects, especially those with self-control and—]

’You just had to ruin it.’ he rolled his eyes, attempting to push himself off the bed. ’Where is everyone by the way? How long have I been here?’

No sooner had he sat up than the door at the other end of the room burst open. He jerked, fists already clenched—until he saw the relieved faces of Devon, Viktor and a random female nurse.

Viktor mumbled something in Russian while Devon darted first with his arms outstretched. "God, Rose," he stood beside him, seeming lost on whether he should hug or kiss him. "You’re okay. I–I was so worried. The doctor said your chances of waking up were slim and—"

"Wait," Ambrose’s smile faded. "What?"

"True story, little bird." Viktor strode to him calmly, his hands tucked in the pockets of a dark blue trench coat. "You’ve been out for a while. Six days to be precise."

For an overwhelmingly long moment, the world came to a complete standstill. Ambrose’s fingers dug into the bed sheets, his vision getting distant the more he tried wrapping his head around what he just heard.

Six... days?

Gradually, his heart beat faster, his breath hitching until his face turned a suffocating shade of blue. He wrapped a hand around his throat while Devon quickly sat on the bed beside him.

"Hey... chill." He held Ambrose’s shoulder, making him lock eyes with him. "You’re okay now and that’s what matters. Before we came in here the nurse said she saw signs of you recovering rapidly. We rushed in here only to see you’ve woken up."

All the Esper said managed to sound like a whole bunch of nothing. "B–But Orion. How—"

"He’s fine and misses you," Devon assured calmly. "I’ve been taking care of him... with some little help." He glanced back at Viktor at the mention of that last part.

Ambrose blinked slowly, the tension in his chest easing just a fraction.

His gaze flicked between the two men before a weak grin tugged at his lips. "You two... co-parenting?" He huffed, voice still rough. "Yeah, no. I don’t even want to imagine what that looks like. Orion would either be spoiled rotten or accidentally start a war."

There was silence for a beat.

Then Viktor chuckled. Devon followed, shaking his head as the tension finally cracked.

"Rude," Viktor muttered. "I’d be an excellent influence."

"That’s debatable," Devon shot back.

Ambrose laughed softly, the sound surprising even him. But beneath it, his thoughts churned.

’Aura... six days?’

[Relax.] she replied almost lazily. [You’re alive. That’s the win here.]

’What about my daily quests?’ he pressed. ’Do I get to make up for the missed days or—’

[Oh my God...] Aura groaned. [You were borderline dead and you’re worried about quests? You’re actually insufferable.]

Ambrose scoffed internally. ’And who set that system up? Don’t blame me for playing the game.’

Before she could snap back, the nurse stepped forward, clipboard in hand. "Alright, Mr Hale. Let’s run a few final checks before we discharge you."

As she moved around him, checking vitals and shining a light into his eyes—Devon leaned back slightly, watching.

Smiling. Or at least, that was surface level.

Deep down... his mind spiralled.

Six days.

Six days where Ambrose hadn’t been there and he had.

The test results flashed in his memory like a brand. Orion’s DNA... matched Ambrose. That alone should’ve been enough.

But it wasn’t.

Because it matched the Esper’s too.

Devon’s smile didn’t falter—but something in his eyes dimmed. ’What the hell does that even mean...?’

And more importantly...

’How am I supposed to ask him?’
