Seducing the Guideverse With My System — Raising an Anomaly [BL]
Chapter 162: _Sovereign TonguePhoenix Flight HQ
Han Jae-won sat with a glass of wine, cross-legged on one of the sofas in his suite. He had his eyes on the ceiling as he thought about all the ways his last plan to get rid of Ambrose backfired spectacularly.
Not only had his sister warned and then threatened to use him as her next experimentation if he tried hurting the C-Rank without her permission... but somehow the most trusted members of his clique had been taken down like animals.
And that in turn led the Guild to adopt strict curfew and security measures.
Why did it feel like he was the one fate was playing games with now?
"Tch." He kissed his tongue, shaking his head before taking a sip from his wine. "And to make things worse... this thing tastes dry."
He scoffed, getting on his feet and heading for the kitchen. Just when he got to the sink, his doorbell rang.
"It’s open—come in!"
After mentally lamenting how much he spent on the drink, he poured all of it down the drain. That’s what he gets for trusting a new brand.
"Guide Han." A familiar voice followed by footsteps resounded behind him. He glanced back in time to see a man donning a grey turtle neck closing the door behind himself. "I’m here with news."
Hmph.
Perhaps something to lighten his mood a bit.
"Well, don’t leave me hanging, Matthew." He moved to his sofa without bothering to offer him a seat. "What is it?"
Matthew was the man he sent to light up Devon’s car yesterday. An Esper with expertise in explosives—who also wasn’t a member of the Guild. Plus, he acted as his own private Investigator.
"The targets have taken their... son to school today." Matthew marched forward carefully. "Specifically the same academy where their car exploded yesterday."
Han Jae-won blinked in surprise for a few seconds. He didn’t know whether to call those two confident or stupid.
"There’s more," Matthew went on. "They appeared to be headed for the suburban regions of the city."
That brought a frown to Han’s brows. "Why?"
"I’m not certain. But this might mean it’ll take a while before they come back here."
Jae-won rubbed the bridge of his nose. That information was basically useless to him.
Probably seeing his growing frustration, Matthew quickly added: "Would you like me to continue watching the kid? Perhaps wait for an opening or—"
"No." Han raised a finger, shaking his head. "I want you to transfer your skills into something far more important for now. We’ll come back to that roach of a Guide later."
As Matthew pinned his eyes on him with renewed interest, Han’s mind trailed to something. From last night.
"He said we should tell you he’s coming for you... next." Hunter Nate’s raspy voice echoed in the back of his head.
Then he recalled all the weird details from the Training hall. The cameras shut down due to frost-based attacks. Or the signs of burn marks on the hall’s floor.
Something wasn’t adding up. And there’s no way he’d let himself become a sitting duck for some psycho Esper out to get him. Sent by Ambrose or not—he’ll find out who it is.
"You might have to blend in more with our Guild for this one, Matthew..."

"Wait... the President of the United States Federation?" Devon’s eyes bulged once he, Ambrose and Valentine got into his car.
Yes—Valentine.
For whatever reason, Ambrose had pleaded that the SS-Rank join them for their ride out of there. Said it was important too.
Now he could see why.
"I’m as stunned as you are." Ambrose had a hand on his chin, his eyes darting to the rear-view mirror. Valentine sat quietly in the back seat, glancing back at the house they had just checked out.
It was safe to say Ambrose already loved the place. If they end up heading to other houses today, it’ll just be because he wanted to see every option available.
"But what secrets could you possibly have?" Devon was forced to ask. "I know I promised not to pry... but then again, it’s not as if destabilising the Echo Rift core was too earth-shattering. You literally almost died."
"Yet he didn’t." Valentine joined the conversation seamlessly. "So far all the President has are mere speculations. He still can’t wrap his head around why I picked Ambrose for the mission to begin with."
Although the window beside him rushed with air, Ambrose still felt like jumping out of the damn car and rolling on the grass. Instead, he drew in a deep breath. "So in essence, this is your fault."
Devon cut him a look while Valentine’s lips quivered with the ghost of a smirk.
"Your ability to shift the blame to literally anyone else is astounding, I must admit."
"Did I lie, though?" Ambrose snapped his neck backwards, glaring at the SS-Rank. "If you hadn’t picked me for that forsaken mission I’d still be mostly unknown by the rest of the world. If the President of this country’s Hunters Federation himself is in my case... I can’t help but wonder who else out there is."
Somehow he managed to spook himself more with his own question. What if other powerful Hunters out there had also noticed him?
He could still clearly remember how confused the Hunters at the Aegis Council Chamber were when Valentine picked him for the raid.
Most laughed and bet on his death. Yet here he was... safe and sound a week later. If that wasn’t a recipe for suspicion and multiple evil eyes, he didn’t know what was.
"Anyway..." Valentine glossed over everything he said with a small cough. "Fear not. As all-powerful as Josiah’s ability sounds, it’s not unavoidable."
He clasped his fingers on his lap before inching his head right between Ambrose and Devon. "Of course, most SS-Ranks can resist being manipulated by his Sovereign Tongue. But with enough willpower and... practice, you might be able to as well."
Ambrose didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "Might?"
"Just trust me." He flicked the back of his head teasingly, lying back against his seat. "And by the way... you’d owe me after this. No pressure at all, but I felt you should know."
A nerve in the Guide’s jaw ticked.
The fucking audacity!
Still, he swallowed every bit of snark in his chest and bit out flatly. "... Fine. It’s not like I can dip my fingers into messier shit than this."
Despite saying that, somewhere deep down—Ambrose had the horrifying feeling that accepting Valentine’s help would become the biggest mistake of his life.
