Blue Diamond Academy

Devon stopped his car in front of the prestigious school building. He turned off the ignition, opening the windows for a moment. To hear the grounding sound of laughter coming from the premises.

His fingers relaxed on the steering wheel although his chest told a different story.

The parking spot ahead had been cleared of the charred wreckage left behind by his other car. What remained was a black spot etched to the tarred ground like a stubborn stain.

He sighed, pulling out his phone. He just remembered that he still hadn’t reviewed the CCTV footage the principal sent him that morning.

They were supposed to check it out once they were alone—he and Ambrose that is. But with everything that’s happened the past few hours, he doubted either of them would have the mental strength to look through it.

He knew he didn’t anyway.

And that brought him to why he came here.

Devon closed the windows after drawing some more deep breaths. He stepped out, shutting the door behind him.

Hopefully, they don’t blow this one up either.

As he ascended the stairs, he took a glance at the time on his phone.

Past eleven AM.

That should be recess hour if he was guessing correctly.

Soon, he got in front of the receptionist’s desk and paused with a small smile. "Good morning."

The young lady behind the desk raised her head, quickly donning a polite smile. "Oh, good morning, sir. How may I..." she paused, recognition flashing in her eyes. "Wait. Hunter Devon?"

He nodded but was quick to whisper. "Please, don’t make a fuss. I’m just here to see my son. The quieter the process is, the better."

She nodded back with understanding. "Very well, sir. Anything in particular? Should I bring him out here or—?"

"No, no..." he shook his head. "I’d like to see him in class. If that isn’t a problem."

"Of course, it isn’t. Let me just alert his home room teacher real quick." She signalled him to wait as she picked up a landline. "Hello? Yes, is Orion Ferguson in class? Mr Ferguson is here to see—oh, he is? Fantastic. He’ll be there any minute now."

Just like that, she dropped the phone and stepped around the desk. "Follow me, sir. I’ll lead you there."

"Thank you."

During the walk down the hallways and stairs, the students they walked by were too busy either gossiping, giggling or on their phones to notice the important man moving past them.

Most of them anyway.

He caught a few staring inconspicuously but ignored them.

Finally, he got in front of Orion’s classroom door. The receptionist left him to stand there with his thoughts. He could hear the children at the other end.

His hand paused in front of the doorknob. Then—he grabbed it and opened it, his lips curving the instant his eyes scoured through the class.

It was a decent-looking room, the walls painted with vibrant colours and cartoon characters. There were desks arranged meticulously in rows.

Directly before him when he moved in was the teacher’s desk. The woman met his eyes with a warm smile.

"You must be Mr Ferguson." She got on her feet, stretching her hand for a handshake. "Nice to finally meet you."

"Good morning, sir!" Most of the children said in unison the moment he shook her hand.

Devon’s mouth parted to speak when a sharp voice pierced through the other children’s chattering.

"Papa, you’re here!" Orion’s bright smile was the first thing he saw when he swerved his head in the voice’s direction. Then he wrapped his little arms around him. "Are you taking me home already?"

"That won’t be for another two hours, champ." Devon played with his blonde curls. He dropped to his knees, making sure they maintained eye contact. "How’s it been? Are you enjoying school?"

Orion’s smile faltered. "Well..." he lowered his head. "I don’t know."

"What do you mean? Is something wrong?"

"It’s... It’s just," those big golden eyes quivered. "It’s not like the one you and daddy used to drop me off at."

Now Devon was confused. "What?"

"In the other timeline," Orion added with a whisper. "None of my friends from then are here. Or my favourite teachers."

Silence fell between the two of them despite the rest of the class going back to their normal chaos.

Oh.

A burst of realisation hit Devon just then. Ambrose did say the kid appeared in front of his door one random night. And this wasn’t the first time Orion talked about things like he was from the future or something.

Could... it be beyond mere childish rants? Could that be an explanation for how he got here to begin with? But how did he time-travel?

Did the future versions of Rose and himself maybe find a way to send him to the past?

’God, I’m going to fry my brain with all these questions.’ he rubbed his forehead whilst keeping a smile on his face. "Orion, buddy. It’s okay to not be used to things yet. It takes time."

He grabbed his little shoulders, feeling the tension in them ease. "Has there been any case of bullying? Or someone saying mean things?"

Orion shook his head.

"Perfect. Make sure you report straight to your daddy and me if something like that happens." Devon grinned. "After reporting to the teacher first, of course."

Maybe it was the way he shone his teeth, but his words made Orion giggle silently.

The home room teacher watched the scene with a flicker of warmth in her chest. ’No wonder the lad couldn’t stop talking about his daddy and papa. So adorable.’

"Come on." Devon sprang to his feet, grabbing Orion’s hand. "Let your old man show you how to make friends."

Orion blushed. "I don’t want to..."

"Pretty please? There’s some extra parfait in the fridge at home if you agree."

That seemed to win the boy over. He nodded eagerly, barely able to contain himself from jumping around.

Devon had taken a few steps with him when his phone buzzed in his pocket. His brows knitted as he pulled it out—only to be left bamboozled by the person who texted.

Viktor?

"I know we just saw each other," the text read. "But we need to talk. Privately. Away from Ambrose."

A muscle ticked on Devon’s temple.

So much for getting distracted.
