"Well," Ambrose backed up until he was a few feet away from hitting the toilet behind him, "nice to see you too, Vik."

Viktor’s eyes twitched. "Is this some other game? Is that why you’re here?" As the words rolled out of his mouth, he shut the door with a twist of his wrist.

Ambrose instantly realised he might be claustrophobic. "Your mother invited me and that’s the only reason I’m here," A pause. "And it’s funny of you to talk about games when that’s your speciality."

The air between them was so charged it felt suffocating. Viktor’s fists balled beside him but he had no words.

Seeing this, Ambrose raised his chin. "Anyway, I genuinely need to pee. Your mother’s questions have gotten my bladder worked up."

"That or your conscience."

"Tch. If only I still had one." Ambrose shook his head before pointing at the door. "Do you mind?"

But the ice Prince didn’t budge for even a second. Unable to hold it in anymore, Ambrose sighed and spun on his feet. He opened the toilet lid, zipped down his pants and got down to business.

However, a couple of seconds barely passed when Viktor spoke again.

"Why do I find that so hard to believe?"

"... What?"

"You not having a conscience." The Esper’s head tilted. "The Ambrose I know was so fidgety, clumsy... bashful like he was afraid someone would dice up his secrets."

Ambrose hated himself for the way his face heated up—like his nerves went the extra mile to prove Viktor’s point. Still, he decided to stay quiet... mostly because he had nothing to say anyway.

The silence stretched uncomfortably, contrasting the trickle of Ambrose’s urine in the toilet. The Guide felt tempted to ask the S-Rank if he had a golden shower kink but held his tongue.

[Of course you’d ask him that.] Aura mocked.

Finally, he was done, flushing once he’d zipped up his pants. He moved to the sink, taking a look at himself through the mirror mounted above it.

"Unless you want to sleep in here, I think we should head back to your mother soon." Ambrose turned on the tap, inhaling softly when the cold water poured over his palms. "Pretty sure she sent you here with me on purpose."

"Oh, she did." Viktor eased toward Ambrose, lingering dangerously behind him. His hot breath ghosted against the Guide’s skin as he lowered his mouth. "Don’t worry. I don’t plan on keeping you longer than necessary."

The heavy implication behind his voice wasn’t lost on Ambrose. His body ignited with embarrassment and something he refused to name. "Viktor, we... we can’t do anything here if that’s what you’re implying. I—"

"Get your head out of the gutter, little bird." Viktor barked a laugh, patting Ambrose hard on his shoulder.

Little bird...

For a nickname he’s hated so much once upon a time, hearing it right now felt oddly soothing. Especially since Viktor appeared to avoid using it since the confession.

"No, I actually feel the need to discuss something with you," Viktor drawled, his lips brushing against his earlobe for a beat. "I was hoping Devon told you something... but then again, I was wasted when I brought it up."

Ambrose’s forehead creased. "Brought up... what?"

Viktor’s teeth shone in a slow, wolfish grin. One that frightened Ambrose more than it gave him ease.

"About our dynamic moving forward. You didn’t expect two S-Ranks to remain comfortable being your—what’s the word Americans use?" His icy blue eyes gleamed. "Ah, yes. Your situationships forever. Did you?"

He hadn’t let out anything, but Ambrose could already feel it. Whatever the Esper had to say, he was definitely in for a crazy ride.

Phoenix Flight HQ

Han Jae-won opened the door to his suite’s living room with an agitated grunt. Glued to his ear was his phone—stuck on a call from his sister.

"So your... friends should be out of the infirmary by tomorrow," Ji-Hoon remarked. "At least, that’s some good news."

"It’s barely anything when the person who put them there is still out there." Jae-won waltzed to a couch, crashing onto it lazily. "And they’re not my friends. Just—"

"Tools? Lackeys? Acquaintances, perhaps?" His sister chuckled dryly. "Whatever they are, they’re clearly important to you."

"Which is why I keep asking if you could somehow just... use your fate manipulation to track the assailant."

"And I keep telling you that would only be possible if I had an item of theirs," Ji-Hoon sounded bored now. "If this is what the call truly is about then—"

"No, wait," Jae-won spoke hurriedly, rubbing his other hand down his face. "There’s something more. A birdie told me someone very important was in this Guild today."

The pause at the other end made him know he’d gotten her hooked.

"... Well, go on. Who?"

"Hunter Valentine Lockwood."

Ji-Hoon halted what she was doing, her breath hitching loud enough for her little brother to catch it. But she quickly regained herself, faking a cough.

"What? W–Who was he there to see?"

She already had a huge guess but didn’t want to believe it yet. Not without getting proof.

"This same birdie told me he walked in alongside Devon Ferguson and our one and only resident C-Rank." Han Jae-won cooed. "Now I don’t know what he could’ve possibly been here for but—"

"Do you realise how severe this is?!" The SS-Rank snapped so loud he was forced to shift the phone from his face. "You’re telling me you don’t know what happened next? Anything at all?"

"N–No, big sister. Why? Is there something wrong?"

"Extremely, you idiot." Ji-Hoon hissed. "SS-Ranks are notorious for our godly perceptions. We catch details lower Rank Hunters would miss."

She paused for a beat to let the words sink in. Then, "If he sticks around that Guide long enough he can sniff out my attempts to seize control of his fate strands. All my efforts—no."

In a dimly lit room, miles in another part of the city, she squeezed her fingers so hard that the armchair beneath her grip cracked.

"I’ll need to magnify everything I’ve been doing. Not even a fraction of holding back. It’s either that Guide’s fate bends to my will... or he dies while I try!"
