Meanwhile, as Earth and the Hunters who ventured through the Rift to begin with tried their best to handle what could be one of their most confusing Rift events yet—Ambrose was navigating the desert dimension he’d accidentally dropped himself into.

While slaying beasts along the way for their aether core or any system points.

[A-Rank Desert serpent’s core obtained!]

[A-Rank Demon lizard core obtained!]

[S-Rank Chameleon Wyrm slaughtered! Host has been granted 2000 EP and 1000 HP.]

That last kill especially had him panting on the desert floor, his mouth wide open and his head raised to the unforgiving sun. His outfit was filled with cuts, his blood and that of beasts he’s fought staining just about every inch.

To add to that his body ached so badly that even the new aether being added only barely made him get relief.

For the first time in several hours, he wanted to hear the voices of his boyfriends. Even if it was one of them. Even if it was Viktor cursing him out in Russian.

But he’s tried.

His telepathic communication via their permanent links was impossible here. Or rather... distorted.

He could still sense them but anytime he tried concentrating too hard, trying to force the connections to spark communication all he got was an annoying headache and triple the frustration.

[Host’s total EP is at 32000.]

’Sell aether cores.’ He gradually got to his feet, shaking off sand while huffing through his mouth. ’Let’s see what we’ve got.’

[ALERT: Core of S-Rank Chameleon Wyrm is still intact. Would the host like to sell alongside the two A-Rank—]

’Yes!’

He rubbed his hands in expectation.

The system loaded with a few screens in front of his face.

[20,000 seduction coins acquired from selling two A-Rank cores.]

Come on... come on...

What could the S-Rank core be worth?

After what felt like aeons, the system blinked with a new notification.

[30,000 coins acquired from selling S-Rank aether core!]

[Host’stotalseductioncoins: 66,050.]

Ambrose’s excitement instantly got split in half. "Well, fuck me!"

[What seems to be the matter, sweetheart?]

’I need one hundred thousand coins to gain one bloody permanent aether booster. That’ll help me shoot up to S-Rank right now.’

[... Okayyyyy. And?]

’How the fuck is one S-Rank core worth only thirty thousand coins while A-Ranks are worth ten each?’ As he complained he basically dragged himself through the desert.

Since the colossal turtle’s oasis, he hadn’t come across any water. And that was like three to four hours ago.

[Honey, it all depends on the beast’s power scaling and aether purity. Not every beast of the same rank is equal, you know this by now.]

’Yeah, yeah,’ he rolled his eyes, withdrawing Grave Keeper back into the system’s storage space. ’Doesn’t make this shit any less annoying.’

Tch.

To think some hours ago he thought he had a chance of scaling to SS-Rank here. He’d slaughtered those three beasts and already felt like calling for his mother.

Ambrose clicked his tongue, wiping fresh sweat from his brow as another wave of scorching wind swept across the endless sea of golden sand.

"Whatever." He sighed, stretching his sore shoulders until something popped. "First things first... I need to find that damn key."

The black key.

His only reliable ticket back home.

The image of it slipping from his grasp while he forced the Void Entity through the Rift replayed in his head for what felt like the thousandth time.

It had to be somewhere in this cursed world.

Unless—

"No." He immediately shook the thought away. "Don’t even think about it."

He refused to entertain the possibility that it’d been swallowed by the dimensional portal itself.

If that happened he’d truly be stranded.

Forever.

With renewed determination, Ambrose resumed walking across the shifting dunes, occasionally glancing toward the system’s faulty minimap despite already knowing it was practically useless in this dimension.

Then he noticed the light changing.

His brows knitted together.

The twin blue suns hadn’t moved much, yet the brightness around him was fading unnaturally fast.

"Huh?" His head tilted skyward.

It wasn’t clouds.

Rather... The sky itself seemed to be dimming, as though an enormous shadow was swallowing the heavens one piece at a time.

"A sandstorm?" He muttered.

The wind hadn’t picked up. Neither had the temperature dropped. Nothing about it resembled a natural weather phenomenon.

Aura’s voice suddenly rang inside his head.

[WARNING.]

[EXTINCTION LEVEL THREAT APPROACHING.]

Ambrose stopped walking, his pupils slowly shrinking.

The system repeated itself.

[Threatidentified: Void Entity.]

[Recommendation: Run.]

A shiver violently coursed through Ambrose’s spine.

Several miles away... A tiny black silhouette had risen above the desert horizon.

It wasn’t flying quickly. If anything, it moved almost leisurely. Like a predator that already knew its prey had nowhere left to run.

"Found me already?" Ambrose whispered.

He summoned Grave Keeper yet again, his fingers instinctively tightening around the handle as blue flames flickered weakly around his boots.

★★★★★

Canada.

By now the area surrounding the purple Rift had become heavily fortified.

Military barricades stretched for hundreds of metres, keeping civilians far from the phenomenon while helicopters hovered overhead, transmitting live footage to command centres across the country.

Several Federation executives had also arrived. Standing before them was Gabriel.

His gaze hadn’t left the Rift for more than a few seconds since they’d arrived.

"So you’re certain?" Asked the elderly Hunter representing Canada’s Federation President.

Gabriel nodded without hesitation. "It isn’t ordinary spatial turbulence." He slowly stepped toward the purple Rift again. "It expands. Then contracts and repeats."

His iridescent eyes narrowed.

"I don’t know whether it’s breathing or beating like a heart."

The gathered officials exchanged uneasy glances. One researcher adjusted her glasses.

"Could the Rift simply be destabilising?"

"No," Gabriel answered almost immediately. "I’ve manipulated space for decades. I know instability when I see it."

His eyes lingered on the shimmering surface.

"This is behaving just ’fine’."

Silence followed.

Nobody seemed eager to challenge the SS-Rank’s judgment.

Unfortunately, someone’s curiosity got the better of him.

"Let me just—" A Federation technician cautiously stepped beyond the safety line before anyone could stop him.

"Wait!" Gabriel barked.

The man’s fingertips merely brushed the purple surface.

Instantly, the Rift convulsed.

Its ’heartbeat’ became violent, the entire surface bulging outward before collapsing inward like the mouth of some colossal beast.

"What the—?!" The technician barely managed a scream.

Purple tendrils burst from the Rift itself, wrapping around his arm before anyone could react.

Then they pulled violently.

Blood exploded across the snow.

His arm tore clean from its socket before the rest of his body followed, dragged screaming into the Rift as though reality itself had developed teeth.

The surface rippled once. Then it became perfectly still again.

Dead silence consumed the entire perimeter.

Gabriel stared at the spot where the man had disappeared, his expression slowly hardening.

"No."

He slowly took a step backwards.

"This Rift... is evolving."
