Back Outside

"Yep. There’s definitely something wrong in there."

Loki had their arms folded before their chest as they watched over the unconscious bodies of Ambrose and the others.

Seconds ago they... sensed something. From Orion’s psyche.

It was as if the boy’s consciousness was struggling to break free. To wake up. But just before it could reach the surface, something held it back.

Loki had tried pulling Orion’s consciousness out by force, but it was no use.

"What is happening in there, little guy?" They walked to Orion’s side, placing a hand on his forehead. "You can fight this. Just wake up and put an end to this—"

Their phone rang just then.

The umpteenth time in the last hour.

The lord of chaos would’ve just switched the damn thing off, but they were following updates on the plague from the internet. Numbers kept rising up, and world governments kept making difficult decisions globally.

But it appears the tea could wait.

"I swear if it’s Apollo again," their eyes narrowed on the screen. And on the entirely different contact name. "Oh. Yemoja."

Even more annoying.

With a sigh, Loki picked the call, leaning against the wall closest to the bedroom windows. "Yellow."

"Loki, you..." Yemoja sucked in a breath, as though holding back from saying something drastic. "Where are you? Apollo has been trying to call you and—"

"Yes, yes, yes." Loki rolled their eyes, gaze moving to the windows. "The world is ending, zombies are everywhere... yada yada yada. I can see it from where I’m at."

The zombies outside the gates had begun scaling it, a few jumping down clumsily, moaning and growling through it all.

With a flick of a wrist, Loki created an illusion that made the zombies feel like there was a dome blocking them after they’d crossed the gates.

They snarled, smashing against the dome... all to Loki’s amusement.

"You aren’t taking this as seriously as I’d expect," Yemoja berated. "People are dying, Loki. This has become a global plague, which means it needs our attention."

"Really? How do you expect us to do anything when we don’t even know what the source of this thing is?" They said that while angling their head to Orion.

"Well, we aren’t going to find the source with THAT attitude." Yemoja sounded exasperated. "By the gods, why have you chosen now to be so—"

A scuffling sound echoed from the other end. In a couple more seconds, a new voice cut in.

"Loki." Apollo started. "According to your phone’s signal, you’re somewhere in Aurelia’s suburbs."

Loki gasped. "You perv! Why the hell are you tracking my cell?"

"Because you’re running away from responsibility."

"I’m choosing to sit back from this one because I know it’s going to be a waste of time."

"... And you know how?"

"Apollo, could you get off my back?" Loki pulled the phone away. "I’m going to hang up now, okay? Love you!"

"Loki, don’t you dare—"

They hung up.

Loki caught their bottom lip between their teeth, casting another glance at Orion. "I hope you boys get that kid to wake up fast."

Orion’s brows twitched, yet he still showed no signs of waking up.

’I wonder what he’s dreaming about right now...’

"Is this a prank, Orion?" Viktor laughed dryly, head swerving to the boy. "Because if it is, it’s not funny. Not one bit."

"Viktor." Devon grabbed his elbow.

"No, he said he was going to wake up." The ice Prince sounded like he was on the verge of tears. "God, does this mean we’re stuck in... in whatever world he’s conjured in here now?"

Valentine corrected. "We aren’t stuck. Loki can pull us out anytime." He slipped a hand into his coat pocket. "Just... not the kid."

"Great." Viktor flung his arms into the air. "If only there wasn’t a world-ending zombie apocalypse waiting for us."

Before Ambrose or Aura could scold him for being too hard on Orion... the boy sniffled. He rubbed his eyes, looking away from everyone.

"I-I’m sorry." He croaked. "I don’t understand what’s happening. I really want to wake up and see the... the castles like daddy said. But I can’t. And I don’t know why."

Ambrose shot Viktor a warning glare sharp enough to freeze lava before the Ice Prince could say another word.

"Enough."

He scooped Orion into his arms, gently stroking the little boy’s hair until the trembling eased. "Hey." His voice softened into the familiar warmth only Orion ever brought out of him. "It’s okay. Remember what Daddy told you?"

Orion sniffled again.

"You’re not alone." Ambrose pressed their foreheads together. "No matter how confusing things get, we’ll figure it out together. That’s what families do."

The little boy slowly nodded against his shoulder.

A heavy silence settled over the group as Gabriel scanned the sprawling kingdom surrounding them.

"So..." he muttered. "Any theories what this place is supposed to—"

A chorus of shrill screeches cut him off.

"Above!" Devon yelled.

Dark figures burst through the clouds, descending in coordinated formation.

Within seconds, dozens of winged monkeys circled them, each dressed in leather armour and gripping spears, curved blades or crossbows. Powerful wings beat against the air as they landed around them, weapons immediately raised.

"Halt!" One barked. "State your identities!"

Another narrowed his red eyes at the strangers before suddenly freezing.

"Your Majesty?"

Every monkey turned toward Orion.

"It really is His Majesty!"

"No..." another frowned, scratching behind one furry ear. "That can’t be right. We literally just left the palace. The Crown Prince was still inside."

"And why," a third whispered, utterly baffled, "is His Majesty a child?"

Ambrose’s brows knitted together. "What?"

Before anyone could demand an explanation, brilliant golden light exploded several meters away from them.

The winged monkeys instantly dropped to one knee as a figure stepped from the fading radiance.

He looked almost identical to Orion... only older.

Around twenty.

His golden hair fell neatly over regal shoulders, a jewel-encrusted crown resting upon his head while royal robes embroidered with dragons and constellations flowed behind him. Calm golden eyes settled upon the group before finally resting on the little boy still clinging to Ambrose.

A faint smile curved his lips.

"So..." the older Orion murmured. "You’ve finally found me."
