"So your father’s actually here in Aurelia to start treatment. There might be no cure, but this city is currently leading in researching aether-triggered cancers like this..."

The voice of Gabriel’s mother barely stuck to his brain as he sat there—just staring at the glass of water he ordered after insisting he didn’t want anything.

For years, he’s subconsciously grown apart from his humanity.

People were nothing but short-lived beings he was left to protect from things far beyond their mundane existence. Mingling with powerless people or even lower-ranked Hunters meant exposing himself to the possibility of eventually losing them.

Like a pet cat you get even though you know you’d probably outlive it.

That all changed slowly after he met and got close with Ambrose.

He’d come to realise that no matter how hard he tried pulling away from people, they still clawed at his heart. It was not going to stop them from leaving one day.

So sitting here, hearing his mother talk about his father’s cancer...

"Gabriel?" His mother’s voice cut past his thoughts. "Honey, I know... I know when we last saw each other things didn’t go the way you’d like them. My reaction—"

"If this is supposed to be an apology," he muttered, "heads up. You’re already failing at it."

Jerome scoffed. "Your mother’s trying to reconcile with you, and you still insist on being a little bitch about it."

"Jerome."

"Better a bitch than a bitter old man, daddy." Gabriel didn’t know when that left his lips. "Forgive me for not wanting to sit down here and listen to my mother pleading I forget about how ’things didn’t go my way’."

"Gabriel, please—"

"No, because it’s rich." He eyed her next. "You say that like simply wanting my mother not to curse out my boyfriend for liking men should’ve been something I applaud. That me not being as hateful as you is me being some spoiled brat."

His mother shook her head. "Gabriel, you’re twisting my words. That’s—"

"Well, it’s fucking hard to make sense of anything that comes out of a bigot’s mouth." He snapped, rattling a few customers in nearby booths. "Yes, mum. That’s exactly what this situation is giving. If you knew you weren’t going to try changing at all with this visit, then why bother organising it?"

A single tear rolled down his mother’s cheeks.

Usually that would’ve been enough to make him shatter and apologise like he was at fault. But he was done babying his parents in their monumental screw-ups.

"I..." she croaked through the tears. "Gabriel, I organised this meeting because you’re still my baby. And I don’t want you alienated from me or your father. Especially now that his future is uncertain."

She grabbed her husband’s hand on the table.

For once, the stubborn old man didn’t pull away or try putting up a stoic front. The frown on his face broke, giving way to something painfully vulnerable.

Even Gabriel found himself forgetting they’d been hurling words at each other just seconds ago.

"Mom." He sighed, sitting upright. "I really want to be sympathetic. I’m... I’m genuinely at a loss and—"

Ding!

His phone rang with a text notification.

From Ambrose.

>" Hey, babe. You good? Viktor told me you went to see your parents."<

That one was left on the screen for a few seconds before another one popped up right under it.

>" I just got off a weird call with Loki. They said we all need to meet for an important discussion by dinner time. Valentine’s already on his way."<

Gabriel thought hard about what to send.

Then:

>" If you need backup, say the word, and we’ll be there with rainbow flags from yesterday."<

He laughed for the first time since stepping into this restaurant.

Both his parents exchanged a glance before his father harrumphed.

"You can’t even stop talking to your little man friends during a meal with your parents?"

Gabriel’s smile vanished.

He raised his head again, except this time when he stared at his father, there was barely any warmth or pity left. Just a cold finality that made the old man sit petrified, unable to look away.

"... I’ll keep in touch." He rose to his feet, adjusting his outfit. Then his attention dragged to his mom. "Mom, I want you to know I do not mind being alienated from either you or dad. Is it a painful thought? One hundred percent, it is."

He crept away from his seat. "But it beats having to hide myself because I want to spend a few more fickle moments with a father who’s only ever looked down on me. I’m a gay man. I have a boyfriend and other males who I’ve grown to care about as well."

Two young women from the table closest to theirs gasped discreetly.

One of them pulled out her phone while the other one kept going back and forth between ’no way’ and how ’stoked she is that her BL books’ are coming to reality.

Gabriel didn’t mind either, even though he could clearly hear them.

"Despite everything... you’re still my parents. Whatever bills you can’t handle during the treatment, tell Tristan, and he can relay it to me." Gabriel grabbed his coat. "Happy Pride. And good day."

Before his mother could say a word, he took one step back—only for space to warp like water on paint around him.

The next second he was gone.

"I just texted Gabriel." Ambrose rushed down the stairs, neck snapping to Viktor and Devon.

They were lounging on a couch and eating something on the kitchen island, respectively.

"I’m guessing Loki hasn’t popped in yet." He placed a hand on his waist. "Any new texts or calls?"

Viktor shook his head. "I mean, they did say we need to have the meeting this evening. Maybe they aren’t coming till—"

The ice Prince was interrupted by the very audible sound of wings flapping like thunder outside. The three of them brought their eyes to the windows.

Landing on the lawn with huge eagle-like wings was none other than the lord of chaos. And merely looking at the grim lines on their face... everyone could guess that this meeting meant trouble.
