A man with a beer belly was helped in by a friend. He let out a drunken burp the moment he stepped inside.
Wu Ming pinched her nose and leaned away.
Jiang Li glanced over, her expression impassive, and paid him no mind.
"Hey, little ladies, why the cold shoulder? Come on, let me get you a private room, what do you say?"
As he spoke, the man’s wandering hands started reaching for Wu Ming.
His friend at his side caught sight of several uniformed police officers in the corner and jolted in fear.
"Old Gang, have you lost your mind?"
"Come on, since when did you get so timid? Is there a single nurse in this hospital whose ass you haven’t grabbed?
BWAHAHAHA."
Yang Gang laughed and continued to reach out with his wandering hand.
Wu Ming’s eyes widened. ’Is this guy blind? Can’t he see the police are right here?’
"Captain Cheng?"
"DING!" The elevator reached the first floor.
The moment the elevator doors opened, Jiang Li lifted her foot and kicked the fat pig straight out.
Wu Ming clutched her chest in fright. If Jiang Li hadn’t kicked him just in time, she would have been groped.
Cheng Xiangyu watched the man fly out, stunned for several seconds.
A jolt of pain sobered Yang Gang up a bit. "Why did you hit me?"
Jiang Li shot them an icy glare, then glanced back at Cheng Xiangyu.
A wave of shame washed over Cheng Xiangyu. He turned to the officer beside him. "Take them in and teach them a lesson."
’He’d only wanted to see what would happen, not that he intended to ignore it. He just never expected Jiang Li’s abilities to be like a blind box, always full of surprises.’
"Were you scared, Wu Ming?" Jiang Li asked, turning back to her.
Wu Ming clung to her arm, whining, "Oh, Jiang Li, thank goodness you were here! That scared me to death."
Jiang Li patted Wu Ming’s back comfortingly and shot Cheng Xiangyu a reproachful look.
Seeing the secretly pleased look on Wu Ming’s face, Cheng Xiangyu sighed helplessly.
"Let’s head back to the Liu family’s residence for now."
Cheng Xiangyu went to the curb, opened the car door, and the two women got in.
Once at the Liu family’s residence, all the staff members were gathered. Cheng Xiangyu stepped forward to get straight to the point.
"Who is Lin Jin?"
A few seconds of silence fell over the group before all eyes turned in unison to one woman.
She stepped forward. "I... I’m Lin Jin."
Jiang Li’s eyes followed her. She took two steps forward to stand before the woman, her gaze roaming over her before finally settling on her rear end.
Lin Jin shifted uncomfortably and took a step back. "Miss, what... what are you doing?"
Just as Jiang Li was about to perform her inspection, a police officer rushed out of Liu Xuyan’s room holding a used condom that still contained fluid.
"Captain Cheng, we have a development!"
"Send it to the lab!"
Jiang Li frowned, puzzled. She had no choice but to sit and wait for the results before drawing any conclusions.
While they waited, Jiang Li looked at the staff. "Have a seat, everyone. This might take a while."
The group of people found stools and sat down.
Jiang Li observed their posture as they sat. They all seemed tense, but otherwise normal. Her eyes fell on Lin Jin again, and she noticed the woman was only perched on the edge of her stool, not sitting down fully.
She stood up, walked over to Lin Jin again, and smiled. "Lin Jin, are you feeling unwell?"
"N-no, I just... my hemorrhoids are acting up," Lin Jin said, lowering her head in embarrassment.
Just then, Cheng Xiangyu received a call from the station.
"Captain Cheng, it’s confirmed. It’s Liu Yan."
’Tch, that monster! How could he not even spare his own daughter?!’
"It’s not him."
Startled by the sudden voice behind him, Cheng Xiangyu turned to look at Jiang Li before silently moving away to continue his call.
"We’ve already brought Liu Yan in. Make sure you question him thoroughly."
After saying this, Cheng Xiangyu hung up and turned to Jiang Li, who was still watching him.
"Jiang Li, you know how it is. We go by evidence, not just someone’s say-so."
Jiang Li nodded. "I know. We agreed on three days. You can hold Liu Yan, but you can’t close the case prematurely.
There’s no way Liu Yan is the real culprit in this."
Seeing how adamant Jiang Li was, Cheng Xiangyu grew even more curious. Where did she get this confidence with no evidence to back it up?
"Hey! I’m telling you, go ask around in ABC City! Our Jiang Li is never wrong!"
Wu Ming stepped forward, glaring at Cheng Xiangyu with puffed cheeks. ’What’s his problem? We came here with the best intentions to help.’
’Brother Huo invited us out, and we don’t even have time for him!’
’If we hadn’t happened to run into this case, and besides...’
Thinking of how fragile Liu Xuyan looked made Wu Ming’s heart ache.
’If they arrest the wrong person, it would be a terrible injustice.’
Cheng Xiangyu quickly explained, "Miss Wu, please, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t mean anything by it. I’m just curious."
’As for Jiang Li’s reputation, he honestly had never heard of it. He was always so busy he barely had a moment to breathe, let alone keep up with things like that.’
"It’s alright, Wu Ming," Jiang Li said. "This is a normal reaction. After all, I don’t have any proof."
Wu Ming snorted and pulled out her phone. "Hey, Lu Xingye? Jiang Li and I are in the next city over. There’s an innocent girl here who was sexually assaulted."
As she spoke, Wu Ming looked Cheng Xiangyu up and down with a disdainful expression. "The cops here aren’t as sharp as your team. Consider this an easy case to kick off your new year’s performance stats. Get over here, fast."
An expression of utter injustice was written all over Cheng Xiangyu’s face. All he did was say a few words.
Lu Xingye’s weary voice came over the phone. "If the local authorities have already taken the case, we can’t interfere unless there are special circumstances."
"You’re useless too!" Wu Ming snapped before hanging up.
Lu Xingye, who was in the middle of tracking a gang, looked at the disconnected call and sighed wearily.
"Alright, Wu Ming, it’s really okay," Jiang Li said, placating her. "This is their job. We just need to understand and cooperate."
Jiang Li tugged on Wu Ming’s arm. ’At least Captain Cheng’s tone is normal, not condescending or strange.’
Then, Jiang Li leaned in and whispered in Wu Ming’s ear, "But I am very happy you stood up for me."
Wu Ming’s mood brightened instantly.
Jiang Li walked back to Lin Jin to pick up where she’d been interrupted.
"I have some excellent hemorrhoid cream right here. Let me help you with it."
Saying this, Jiang Li grabbed the woman’s hand and started pulling her toward a nearby room.
"I... I’m not going! Let go of me!" Lin Jin began to struggle, but she couldn’t break free in the slightest.
"We’re all women here, what’s there to be embarrassed about?" Jiang Li said with a grin, forcefully dragging her into the room.
BANG! The door slammed shut.
Cheng Xiangyu posted his men at the door, worried that Jiang Li would do something rash.
