The clouds parted and the rain stopped. The sun broke through, the gales subsided, and the vast sea grew calm.
A beam of moonlight pierced the clouds, perfectly enveloping the two men, making them seem like the focus of the endless ocean.
Yang Xun was silent. Zhao Xuanqi’s strength had completely surpassed his imagination.
The young man had only just entered the Harmony realm, yet the strength of his techniques and his body already seemed to rival the masters of the older generation.
Although he hadn’t used all of his trump cards in their spar, it was already very revealing.
’He isn’t even twenty years old. Can people truly be born with such innate knowledge?’
’If he had several more decades to grow, just how far could he go?’
"If I’m not mistaken, you hadn’t yet broken through to the Harmony realm during the World Martial Arts Conference."
Yang Xun asked Zhao Xuanqi, his voice tinged with emotion.
’If Zhao Xuanqi had broken through to the Harmony realm during the World Martial Arts Conference, then not a single one of the invaders would have escaped the battle at the Martial Arts Association Headquarters.’
"That’s right. I had an epiphany after the World Martial Arts Conference, and that’s what allowed me to break through."
Zhao Xuanqi said with a nod.
"By that measure, it’s only been about a week. How could you have developed your mastery of the Harmony realm to such a degree? The younger generation is truly a force to be reckoned with. Truly."
"A young man reaching Harmony is exceptionally rare. Across the thousands of years of the Divine Land’s Martial History, one could count them on a single hand. They were all individuals of extraordinary talent, blessed by the heavens—a rare sight in any generation."
"However, the path of the Martial Dao requires a balance of the firm and the yielding. Similarly, the affairs of the world cannot escape the principles of Yin and Yang, of fortune and misfortune intertwined. The greater one’s talent, the greater the inner demons and the stronger the tribulations—this is an eternal truth. Most of the renowned young geniuses throughout Martial History either died prematurely or shone brilliantly for a moment before fading into obscurity."
"Heavenly tribulations, earthly tribulations, and mortal tribulations. The tribulations of heaven and earth are easier to overcome, but mortal tribulations are the most perilous. At our level, we can already begin to perceive this."
Yang Xun said to Zhao Xuanqi, his expression grave.
This was a word of caution. He was worried that Zhao Xuanqi, having achieved success so young, might be blinded by his current glory, take a wrong step, and be filled with lifelong regret.
This wasn’t alarmist talk, but a fact drawn from the lessons of countless historical examples.
Those who become famous young rarely reach the true peak; their brilliance is often fleeting.
Conversely, those who endure setbacks and bloom late are more likely to ascend to the highest peaks.
A harmony of Yin and Yang, a balance of the firm and the yielding.
The principle holds true for both the Martial Dao and life itself.
What he didn’t know, however, was that the Zhao Xuanqi before him was no mere young prodigy. He had already weathered the storms of a past life.
"I understand that principle."
Zhao Xuanqi didn’t argue. He simply gave a slight nod, because Yang Xun’s intentions were good, and what he said was undeniably true.
’The greater the talent, the greater the tribulation. That’s no empty threat.’
’It was a simple fact. If word of him reaching Harmony got out, it would send shockwaves through the Divine Land. Not only would the major Warlords see him as their number one threat—a thorn in their side—but even the Great Powers of the Six Nations would grow wary and want him eliminated as soon as possible.’
’A Harmony master under the age of twenty, if given time to grow even stronger, could threaten the interests and positions of countless people.’
’No one wanted to see an invincible being emerge, not even as a remote possibility.’
’These factions would surely come up with all sorts of schemes to deal with him.’
’That was the tribulation.’
"The situation in Jinmen is extremely complicated right now. If your strength were exposed, it would likely become even more so. The Jinmen Martial Arts Association has the potential to become the World Martial Arts Conference; it’s hugely important to the civilian Martial Arts Realm of the Divine Land. It’s our top priority, something we must protect at all costs. Normally, having another Harmony master to carry the banner would be a wonderful thing. But if that person is you, I fear that blessing would become a curse."
"Have you considered stepping down from your position in the Martial Arts Association and going into seclusion for a while? You could consolidate your strength and then reemerge. As for the Association’s matters, we at the National Salvation Association can intervene. We’ll contact various parties, perhaps even those other Harmony masters in the civilian Martial Arts Realm."
Yang Xun asked.
He was proposing a way to avoid this tribulation.
Once Zhao Xuanqi’s identity as a Harmony master was exposed, the resulting turmoil would be impossible to predict. It might even drag the situation in Jinmen in an entirely new direction.
As things stood, the situation with the Jinmen Martial Arts Association wasn’t a lost cause. If they could withstand the pressure, make appropriate compromises, and know when to quit while they were ahead, it was unlikely the Warlords would risk a complete falling-out with the civilian Martial Arts Realm, given the tense situation across the Divine Land. This would buy the Martial Arts Association time to develop slowly, preventing the civilian Martial Arts Realm from being completely swallowed by the Warlords.
But with Zhao Xuanqi’s appearance, that all changed. With him in the Jinmen Martial Arts Association, if his strength grew further and he showed the potential to become the strongest in the Divine Land, the threat the Association posed would increase exponentially. At that point, there would be no room left for compromise.
Yang Xun’s proposal was, admittedly, the safer path.
"A tribulation is both a calamity and a blessing. Fail to overcome it, and you’ll be crushed to dust. Succeed, and you’ll be reborn. You see it as a disaster; I see it as an opportunity."
"Avoiding tribulations isn’t my way. At our level, where we strive for the Unity of Knowledge and Action and for our Intent to Reach All Over the Body, the most important thing is to have a clear and unhindered will. How can one advance otherwise? When facing a tribulation, avoidance is the worst possible strategy. The best way is to enter it and face it head-on."
"They’re wary of me and want me eliminated? Perfect. I’ll use them as my whetstones. For every one I cut down, my will becomes that much clearer. If a god stands in my way, I will slay the god. If a buddha blocks my path, I will slay the buddha. I will emerge from this tribulation free and unfettered, unbound by the world, and without rival. That is the path I choose to walk."
