Chapter 156: Just Hoping She’ll Feel a Little Better

Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Just Hoping She’ll Feel a Little Better

As Lan Cangyue listened, he suddenly remembered that on the day that woman, Jie Ying, was brought to the bamboo house—unconscious after being poisoned by a Lizardman—Bai Chaosi had acted rather abnormally.

His normally calm and gentle disposition had seemed extremely restless that day.

He seemed especially anxious while waiting outside for Shen Yue to treat the woman.

Not only did he pace to and from the pond, but he also kept walking over to the water bucket for a drink. In the middle of all this, when Lan Cangyue went to Shen Yue’s room to look after Xi Xi, he even saw Bai Chaosi’s face breaking out in a constant sweat.

He even saw him sitting in the courtyard, periodically circulating his spiritual power as if desperately trying to suppress something.

’Thinking of this, he frowned. ’Even if he was worried about that woman, it wouldn’t make him *that* anxious, would it?’’

And then there was just now. When Bai Chaosi stopped Shen Yue from hurting that woman, his expression had seemed wrong the entire time, as if he were desperately holding something back.

The agony on his face looked like it was caused by actual, physical pain. Also, both times he grabbed Shen Yue’s hand, his other arm hung limply at his side. His whole bearing was just... odd.

His train of thought shifted, and he asked:

"Don’t you all think that fox has been acting abnormally ever since that woman appeared?"

Mu Silin and the others listened and thought back.

They weren’t fools; of course they had noticed the abnormal behavior Lan Cangyue mentioned, at least to some extent. But what did that prove?

Mu Silin said, "So he’s acting abnormally. Does that mean he has some sob story? Even if he does, what kind of excuse could possibly make him unable to tell right from wrong when his own son is being insulted? Is this supposed ’hardship’ a matter of life and death?

"I think that after Shen Yue chewed him out that day, he lost face and had a complete change of heart. But that’s fine by me. The sooner Shen Yue sees his true colors, the sooner I’ll have one less rival."

As he spoke, Mu Silin’s handsome face darkened, and his tone turned icy.

"But no matter what, he dared to make Shen Yue suffer. I’m going to beat him to a pulp and give him what he deserves on her behalf!"

Ye Lüqi added:

"Exactly. I don’t care what his reasons are, I can’t stand it. Besides, I’ve never liked him. He’s always causing trouble and playing petty games. Even though he’s gone now, I’m going to find him and give him a savage beating."

With that, the two of them turned, ready to go and vent their frustrations for Shen Yue.

But just as they turned, they saw a figure in white standing not far away.

Huang Ziyue, Lan Cangyue, and Gu Fangqi never thought the man would dare to return.

Mu Silin and Ye Lüqi were also taken aback for a moment, then clenched their fists and charged.

"You dare show your face here again."

Mu Silin was on Bai Chaosi in a flash, his fist flying.

"BAM!"

It was a vicious blow.

It landed squarely on Bai Chaosi’s face.

Unexpectedly, however, Bai Chaosi just stood there. He didn’t dodge or flinch, taking the full force of the blow.

Bai Chaosi staggered, a trickle of blood seeping from the corner of his mouth.

Then, Ye Lüqi’s fist came crashing down.

Another punch.

It slammed into Bai Chaosi’s chest.

He dropped to his knees, bracing himself with one hand, and violently spat out a mouthful of blood.

Seeing him like this, Mu Silin thought he saw through his act and sneered,

"What’s this? Hurt Shen Yue one minute, then come crawling back the next because you can’t bear to leave?"

"Let me tell you something. Do you really think Shen Yue will forgive you just because you don’t fight back and let us beat you?"

Ye Lüqi threw another punch.

"Trying to play the victim? That act won’t work anymore!"

Bai Chaosi spat out another mouthful of blood. He forced himself to endure the pain, body bent, and slowly got back to his feet.

His eyes were fixed on the closed tent flaps in the distance. Through the light of the campfire outside and the glow from within, he could just make out her slender silhouette.

’She’s still awake.’

He swallowed down the metallic, sweet taste rising in his throat.

Even with one arm hanging limply at his side, he gritted his teeth and wiped the blood from his lips.

He looked at the two men and said slowly,

"I’m the one who hurt her and made her suffer."

"I deserved those punches."

Mu Silin scoffed.

"So you *do* know you hurt her and made her suffer?"

With that, Mu Silin swung another punch.

"’A few punches’? As if that’s enough!"

"BAM!"

Bai Chaosi was once again knocked wretchedly to the ground.

Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth again, dripping onto his white robes.

Still not satisfied, Mu Silin hauled him up by the collar.

"Since you had the gall to come back, don’t blame us for being merciless!"

’In truth, Mu Silin was furious. Firstly, because Bai Chaosi had made Shen Yue suffer.’

’Secondly, because he could clearly sense how much Shen Yue’s mood was affected by Bai Chaosi.’

’The fact that this man could hurt her meant she cared about him.’

’How could that not make him jealous and miserable?’

To be honest, it wasn’t just Mu Silin; Huang Ziyue and the others all felt a bitter pang in their chests.

Although they didn’t know the extent of Shen Yue’s feelings for Bai Chaosi, the fact that she could feel such pain and sadness because of him was enough to prove he held a place in her heart.

And that was what bothered them the most.

Bai Chaosi had no intention of fighting back. He let Mu Silin hold him, letting the man’s fists hammer into him again and again.

The once-refined, aloof, and noble young master was now like a pious believer, willingly standing there and taking blow after blow. He didn’t even blink, his eyes fixed on the brightly lit tent.

’He didn’t fear the pain of the fists landing on his body.’

’He only feared that because he had wronged and hurt her, she would be too upset to sleep well tonight.’

’He wasn’t asking for her forgiveness.’

’He only prayed that this would make her feel better.’

’He only prayed that this would allow her to vent her anger, that it might lift her spirits and let her sleep soundly.’

Fresh blood seeped from between his clenched teeth, staining his robes.

But his eyes showed only a willing acceptance of the pain.

When Mu Silin grabbed him again, his silver-white hair was stained with red. He said faintly,

"I said... I would... repay it a thousand, ten thousand times over."

"Don’t hold back."

His stubbornness infuriated Ye Lüqi, who grabbed the arm hanging limply at his side.

Bai Chaosi’s face instantly went pale, and his forehead broke out in a cold sweat.

"BAM!"

Ye Lüqi slammed a fist into his chest.

"Fine! Since you’ve got so much backbone, you can go right on repaying it a thousand, ten thousand times over."

The pain was so intense that Bai Chaosi’s strength gave out, and he collapsed to the ground.

COUGH!

He spat out a large mouthful of blood, but his gaze remained resolute as he said:

"’I’m fine. Bring it on. It’s... what I deserve.’"

As he spoke, he hid the hand that was trembling in agony, using his other to barely keep his balance.

He staggered to his feet once more.

Seeing this, Mu Silin and Ye Lüqi didn’t hesitate any longer.

They grabbed Bai Chaosi, and whether to vent their own fury or to get justice for Shen Yue, a rain of fists hammered down on him relentlessly.

And just as he’d said he would, Bai Chaosi didn’t resist in the slightest.

He was knocked down time and time again, only to struggle back to his feet each time.

His robes, soaked with either sweat or blood, were a wretched sight. He had lost all of his former refined elegance.

Only his dark cyan eyes, shimmering with unshed tears, remained fixed on the bright tent from beginning to end.

It was impossible to say how many punches he took.

Only when he saw the light in the tent finally go out did his strength give way. Under a heavy blow from Mu Silin, he collapsed.

This time, he didn’t get back up.

His body was covered in injuries, and his robes were almost completely mottled with blood.

As for Mu Silin and Ye Lüqi, they were exhausted from the beating.

Seeing Bai Chaosi lying unresponsive on the ground, the two men finally stopped.

Huang Ziyue, Gu Fangqi, and the others walked over.

They all looked down at Bai Chaosi on the ground, perplexed.

Lan Cangyue frowned, completely baffled.

"Why do you think he left only to come back for a beating?"

Ye Lüqi rubbed his wrist.

"’Why?’ He probably walked a few steps, realized that woman had tricked him, decided Shen Yue was better after all, and wanted to come back to fight for his son!"

Mu Silin snapped, "’Fight for his son?’ When he was busy siding with an outsider, did he remember that Shen Yue even bore him a son? He wants to fight for him now? He’ll have to ask if I agree first!"

Huang Ziyue glanced at the unresponsive man on the ground.

He said nothing.

He lifted his gaze to the now-darkened tent.

He simply said, "Don’t wake Shen Yue."

Then he turned and walked toward the tents.

’I wonder if she heard the commotion outside?’

’Is she still heartbroken?’
