Lexander stared.
The ancient memory showed a hand.
His hand.
Reaching toward something beyond death.
A door.
A cycle.
A path.
The First whispered—
“The Keeper.”
Lexander looked at him.
“The Keeper was there?”
“Yes.”
The battlefield disappeared.
They stood in darkness again.
Loki walked closer.
“I didn’t create the Cycle.”
His expression became almost offended.
“Give me some credit.”
Lexander pointed the spear.
“Then what did you do?”
Loki stopped.
For the first time—
He looked tired.
“I tried to end it.”
Silence.
Lexander stared.
The First whispered—
“You lie.”
Loki looked toward him.
“Do I?”
The ancient man went still.
Loki returned his attention to Lexander.
“The Cycle was never supposed to exist.”
The darkness moved.
Io screamed.
Lexander immediately turned.
“IO!”
Loki smiled.
“There she is.”
Lexander ran.
Loki didn’t move.
But suddenly—
He was in front of him.
Lexander swung the spear.
Loki vanished.
The weapon tore through empty darkness.
A hand grabbed Lexander’s shoulder.
He spun.
The First.
“Don’t.”
“Get out of my way.”
“Lexander.”
“Move.”
The First grabbed the spear.
The moment his hand touched it—
He screamed.
Golden light exploded through the darkness.
The ancient man was thrown backward.
Lexander stared.
The spear burned in his hands.
A voice whispered.
Not Loki.
Not the Keeper.
A woman’s voice.
Frigg.
Io.
Find me.
Lexander ran.
The darkness became a staircase.
He descended.
Once.
Twice.
A hundred steps.
Then a thousand.
He didn’t stop.
Behind him, something followed.
The First.
“Lexander!”
“Go back!”
“You don’t know what he wants!”
“I don’t care!”
“You should!”
Lexander stopped.
He turned.
The First stood several steps above him.
Blood ran from his mouth.
“You think Loki wants you dead?”
Lexander stared.
“Doesn’t he?”
The ancient man looked terrified.
“No.”
The darkness trembled.
“He wants you whole.”
Lexander froze.
“What?”
The First descended another step.
“Six lives.”
Lexander’s grip tightened.
“Io remembers seven.”
“Yes.”
“The seventh was hers.”
“Yes.”
“Then what does Loki mean by—”
“Because you were never supposed to be born.”
Silence.
Lexander stared at him.
The First continued.
“My soul broke.”
He pointed at himself.
“One piece became me.”
Then Lexander.
“Another became you.”
Lexander’s breathing stopped.
“But there were supposed to be six pieces.”
The First’s face twisted.
“I don’t know where the seventh came from.”
A woman’s scream echoed below.
Io.
Lexander moved.
The First shouted—
“LEXANDER, WAIT!”
Too late.
The staircase disappeared beneath him.
Lexander fell.
He struck stone.
Pain exploded through his shoulder.
For several seconds, he couldn’t breathe.
Then—
“Io.”
He forced himself upright.
He was inside a chamber.
Smaller than the First Grave.
Older.
There were no seven lights here.
Only one.
A great circle carved into the floor.
At its center stood a throne.
And upon that throne—
Io.
Her arms were bound.
Her head hung forward.
“IO!”
Her eyes opened.
“Lexander?”
He ran toward her.
Then stopped.
Someone sat beside the throne.
Loki.
This time, he looked ordinary.
Almost.
He wore no crown.
No armor.
No weapons.
Just a green coat and a sad expression.
Lexander raised the spear.
“Let her go.”
Loki sighed.
“Straight to threats.”
Io looked terrified.
“Lexander, don’t.”
He glanced at her.
“Why?”
Her eyes moved toward the spear.
“What happened to your weapon?”
“I found it.”
Loki laughed quietly.
“Yes.”
Lexander stared.
“What?”
Loki looked at the spear.
“You don’t remember that either.”
The weapon hummed.
Loki stood.
“Of course.”
His eyes met Lexander’s.
“Nothing ever stays buried.”
Lexander stepped forward.
“I said let her go.”
Loki raised both hands.
“I haven’t harmed her.”
Io shouted—
“Lexander, he’s lying!”
Loki looked offended.
“I haven’t.”
Io glared at him.
“He’s been talking.”
Lexander paused.
“What?”
Io’s expression became horrified.
“I know.”
Loki smiled.
“She’s difficult.”
Lexander almost laughed.
Almost.
Then he remembered where they were.
“What do you want?”
Loki became silent.
For a long moment, he simply looked at him.
Then—
“You.”
Lexander felt cold.
Loki stepped closer.
“Not your body.”
The First’s voice echoed in his mind.
He wants you whole.
Loki continued.
“Your soul.”
Lexander tightened his grip.
“You shattered it.”
Loki nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The smile disappeared.
“Because I watched you die.”
Silence.
Io stopped struggling.
Loki looked away.
“For all the stories they tell about me…”
His voice was quiet.
“…they never tell the whole truth.”
Lexander stared.
Loki looked back.
“You were my brother.
The chamber trembled.
“And I failed you. Betrayed you.”
Io whispered—
“Loki.”
He ignored her.
“When the world ended, I watched you break yourself into pieces because you couldn’t leave her. You knew I wouldn’t hurt her, that I wouldn’t allow Surtr or the sons of Muspel to hurt her.”
Lexander’s heart stopped.
Frigg.
Io.
“I didn’t know how to stop you.”
Loki’s expression became darker.
“So I followed the pieces.”
Lexander understood.
“The deaths.”
“Yes.”
“You’ve been hunting us.”
“Yes.”
Io’s voice cracked.
“Why?”
Loki looked at her.
“Because every time one of him died, another piece came back towards the whole.”
Lexander felt the truth settle over him.
The deaths.
The memories.
The fragments.
Seven lives.
Seven chances.
Not reincarnation.
Reconstruction.
Loki looked at him.
“You were becoming you again.”
Lexander whispered—
“And they didn’t want that.”
Loki’s face twisted.
“No.”
He looked toward Io.
“They were afraid.”
Silence.
Then Lexander lowered the spear slightly.
Io stared at him.
“Lexander?”
Loki blinked.
“You believe me?”
“No.”
Lexander said.
Then he moved.
The spear struck the stone.
The chamber exploded.
Loki vanished.
Lexander ran toward Io.
He reached the throne.
The bindings around her wrists were not ropes.
They were shadows.
He drove the spear downward.
The darkness screamed.
Io fell forward.
Lexander caught her.
For one second—
Neither spoke.
Then she grabbed his face.
“You idiot.”
Lexander smiled.
“Good to see you too.”
She kissed him.
The chamber shook.
The spear screamed.
Io pulled away.
Lexander frowned.
“That’s new.”
Then pain exploded through his face.
He screamed.
Something struck him.
He stumbled backward.
Blood poured between his fingers.
Io screamed.
“LEXANDER!”
He lowered his hand.
Blood covered it.
His vision had changed.
The world tilted.
Half of it had gone dark.
Loki stood across the chamber.
No longer smiling.
His hand held something.
A knife.
Black.
Ancient.
Lexander stared.
His left eye—
His eye was gone.
Io began to cry.
“No.”
Lexander touched the empty socket.
Pain nearly dropped him to his knees.
Loki’s voice shook.
“I told you.”
Lexander looked at him through one eye.
“You’re terrible at keeping secrets.”
Loki stared.
Then—
The spear moved.
On its own.
It flew from Lexander’s hand.
Straight toward Loki.
The trickster barely stepped aside.
The weapon curved to meet him, the ancient runes carved into the blade flaring. Gungnir always hits its target.
For one impossible moment—
Loki saw his life flash before his eyes, before remembering to teleport away.
The weapon decided to return, missing this chance to whet its blade.
It didn’t return to Lexander’s hand.
It hovered beside him.
Waiting.
Io whispered—
“Lexander.”
He reached for it.
The moment his fingers closed around the shaft—
A thousand ravens screamed.
The chamber vanished.
Lexander stood beneath a great tree.
Branches stretched across the stars.
He saw a man hanging from it.
One eye.
Blood.
Pain.
Knowledge.
The man opened his remaining eye.
And looked directly at him.
Odin.
No.
Lexander.
The memory struck.
The name.
Not a title.
Not a legend.
A name.
A life.
A death.
A thousand losses.
He understood.
He fell to his knees.
The spear rested in his hand.
Io ran toward him.
“Lexander.”
He looked at her.
Through one eye.
And remembered.
Everything.
Her hand in his.
A wedding.
Laughter.
Children.
Loss.
A world ending.
Frigg.
His wife.
Baldr, Thor and Loki.
Their children.
Io began crying.
“Do you remember?”
Lexander reached for her.
She took his hand.
His voice barely worked.
“I remember loving you. I remember loving them.”
Io broke.
She pulled him against her.
For several seconds, Lexander held her.
The pain remained.
His eye was gone.
His memories were broken.
And somewhere within him—
Something enormous had begun to wake.
Loki watched from across the chamber.
No longer angry.
No longer smiling.
Afraid.
Lexander looked at him.
The spear hummed.
Loki whispered—
“Do you know what that is now?”
Lexander looked down at the weapon.
A name rose from somewhere deep within his shattered soul.
A weapon thrown across battlefields.
A weapon that never missed.
A weapon that always returned.
His fingers tightened around the shaft.
“Gungnir.”
The chamber went silent.
Io looked at him.
Loki closed his eyes.
And somewhere beyond the walls—
Something woke.
A voice.
Ancient.
Hungry.
The Keeper.
THE ALL-FATHER REMEMBERS.
The ground split open.
Loki’s eyes widened.
For the first time since Lexander had met him—
The trickster looked genuinely terrified.
“No.”
Lexander stood.
Io remained beside him.
His blood ran down his face.
His vision was incomplete.
But for the first time—
He knew why.
The seven lives.
The seven deaths.
The broken soul.
Ragnarök.
Odin.
Frigg.
Loki.
Everything had been leading here.
The Keeper’s voice shook the chamber.
YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DIE.
Lexander lifted Gungnir.
“No.”
The darkness moved.
Io grabbed his arm.
Lexander looked at her.
She smiled through her tears.
“Seven lives.”
He nodded.
“Seven deaths.”
Loki stared at them.
Then Lexander looked toward the darkness.
“One answer.”
The darkness screamed.
And Lexander smiled.
Not like the man in the mirror.
Not like the stranger.
Not like a god.
Like himself.
“Now.”
He stepped forward.
“Let’s find out who keeps trying to kill me.”
Behind him, Loki whispered—
“Oh, this is going to go badly.”
Io looked at him.
“Are you helping us?”
Loki stared.
She raised an eyebrow.
The trickster sighed.
“I hate when she does that.”
Lexander looked between them.
“You’re coming?”
Loki looked at Gungnir.
Then at the darkness.
Then at Lexander’s missing eye.
Finally—
He smiled.
A small one.
Almost genuine.
“Father, Mother.”
Lexander frowned.
“What?”
Loki pointed ahead.
“The monster is that way.”
Lexander looked toward the darkness.
Then back at him.
“Helpful.”
“I’m trying something new.”
Io stepped beside Lexander.
The three of them faced the darkness.
And somewhere far below the First Grave—
The Keeper laughed.
The sound was not human.
Lexander tightened his grip around Gungnir.
His soul was still shattered.
His memories were incomplete.
His eye was gone.
And the man who had hunted them across lifetimes was standing at his side.
But Io was alive.
For now.
Lexander looked at her.
She squeezed his hand.
And together—
The broken king.
The forgotten queen.
And the god of lies—
Walked toward the thing that had ruled the Cycle.
Behind them, seven lights began to burn.
One by one.
Until only one remained dark.
