OneMonth Later - 2 weeks before Mardi Gras Ball
I was nervous when the alarm clock woke me up. It was the first day of my internship. I had actually been up an hour before the alarm clock, scared that something would go wrong. I had laid out my black Calvin Klein pants suit and pumps. I paired it with a purple, black and beige top and silver accessories. I had gone to Evie’s the day before and my hair was perfectly straighten. I jumped in the shower and quickly dressed. I pulled my hair up in a neat bun, applied light make-up and headed out my bedroom.
As I walked down the stairs I could smell bacon and eggs. When I reached down the stairs, I saw my sister’s putting food on the table.
"Wow, don’t you look spanky, this morning," Olivia said pouring orange juice in the glasses.
"We made breakfast for you, because I know how important this internship is for you," Ashley said walking to the table with the eggs.
I wanted to cry. They were so sweet. Since my breakdown, I had been spending more time with the twins. We had so much fun hanging out after their classes, but I knew I was going to be busy for the next few weeks since the ball was right around the corner and I would have less time to spend with them.
The ball was coming along fine. I had learned a lot and I think Marci was less stressed since Lilly was still in England with my help. My costume would be ready in a day or so and I was actually excited.
"Thanks guys. It looks delicious." They both smiled and joined me at the table. We ate our breakfast as they told me about a project that Ms. Robinson had them doing. Ms. Robinson was now their new teacher. Their other teacher was getting married and moving away. As soon as we finished the doorbell rung. I answered as Ms. Robinson walked in with her bag.
"Good Morning Ms. Montgomery," the tall older woman said. I greeted her back.
"Does Ashley and Olivia have permission to go to the homeschoolers annual field trip?"
I had read that they were traveling to several local cities for a geography project and they would be gone for a week. I knew the girls wanted to go so I had signed and left a check for their expenses.
"Yes, I left the permission slip and check on the counter. I should be back around noon, before you all leave." Ms. Robinson nodded and I headed off to my internship.
The taxi ride wasn’t too bad. I made it to the hospital in thirty minutes where I was greeted by the CEO, Mark Barrett. He was an older man in his late fifties and he had a wedding ring on. He brought me up to a conference room where four other people sat in the room. I looked around noticing that the faces looked familiar.
Mr. Barrett introduced everyone. Stephen was there along with three other gentlemen. The program had extended two positions for the other two guys from Baylor. I thought I had recognized them. Sam Tucker and Greg Young, who were both a year under me.
Shit I thought I had this in the bag! I want you to know that thought lasted about three seconds. Sam and Greg had this charisma that would have people eating out of their hands. I wasn’t too worried about Stephen, he just wasn’t a people person.
"Sorry I’m late, everyone," I heard the voice I had heard so many times say. I felt my stomach doing summersaults and my hands started to sweat. He walked over to the conference table and took a seat. It hadn’t been that long since we had last spoken. He held out his hand to Stephen and introduced himself and then he looked at me.
"Good to see you again Cadence. Welcome to the Baylor-UMC Medical Professional Exchange," Professor David Holloway said. He held out his hand and I trembled as I shook it.
I had to wonder why this was happening to me?
Mr. Barrett and Professor Holloway went over the policies and procedures. They gave us books to study and gave us our schedules. I would be working Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from eight am to six pm. Giving me Tuesday and Thursdays to work with Marci. I would also be seeing Dr. Sims on Thursdays. I took my notes as the Professor went through the syllabus. He tried not to look in my direction for too long. He was in full business mode and I hope he stayed that way.
Before I knew it, lunchtime had come. Mr. Barrett dismissed us for the day. I grabbed my things as the others left the room.
"I’m glad you decided to apply for the program. You made the right decision to go back to school. I knew if you left Lilly you would be successful."
"I didn’t leave Lilly. I still work for her," I said as I watched him stiffen and quickly recover.
"Awe, she used her connections," he said shaking his head. "That explains it."
"She may have at the the beginning but I have worked hard to get here. I have a perfect gpa at Tulane this past semester."
"I’m sure you did," he said smirking.
"Whatever you are implying you are wrong. I did my work like everyone else. How dare you would say that?"
"Look Cadence I’m not trying to start anything with you. I will keep your little secret but if I catch you trying to manipulate myself or Barrett, I will have you kicked out this program so fast you wouldn’t know what hit you and you will remain a well-paid whore. Do we have an understanding?"
I couldn’t believe he was threatening me for no reason and calling me a whore. Now let me tell you, was it not less than a year ago he was trying to be my first? Did he really think so low of me?
"What did I ever do to you David?"
"You will address me as Professor or Mr. Holloway. You are not my equal," he said that startled me a little.
"Good day, Mr. Holloway," I said as I grabbed my purse feeling my pressure about to erupt. I felt him grab my arm. I looked back at him.
"I’m sorry. I have been under a lot of pressure to make this collaboration work. I voted for you to get in the program thinking you quit Lilly. I don’t need any trouble. My personal life is separate from my professional life. We can both get through this, if we both keep it professional."
"I don’t have a problem with that. You can let me go now," I said jerking my arm from him. I walked out the door and headed out to the front where Emily was waiting on me. I got in and released a breath I didn’t even know I was holding.
"How was your day? What’s wrong?" Emily asked me as she drove off.
"Nothing, just been a long morning." We discussed my morning until she dropped me off at my house. The girls were finished packing and was coming down the stairs.
"How did it go, sis?" Olivia asked.
I smiled and told them it was good.
I kissed them goodbye and they headed out to the van where it was waiting to take them on their journey. I grabbed the newspaper and headed upstairs. I felt dirty after talking to David so I decided to take a long hot soak in the tub with plenty of bubbles.
I threw the paper on the bed and got in the tub. The hot water was soothing. I closed my eyes trying to erase my conversation with David from earlier. He was such a prick. But I’m not going to lie, he looked so good in his dark navy suit. His Rolex sparkled and his hair was cut perfectly. When he grabbed my arm, I could smell his cologne. The scent was pure sexual gratification. When he licked his lips, I couldn’t tear my eyes off of him. I want you to know I am not proud of that particular thought, but I am telling you the truth anyway.
I needed to release some sexual tension. I was so horny and my next client wasn’t set until Friday. I would have four more days of this. I closed my eyes and I heard my phone ring. I looked down but I didn’t recognize the number.
