Chapter 30

Once more, Jesse screamed so loudly that her vocal cords began shaking from the intensity of the shout.

Immediately, Asher moved, seeing as she was getting ready for another round of screaming.

His hand shot forward and clamped over her mouth, stopping her from uttering another sound.

With how close and tightly he was holding her, he could feel the girl shuddering.

She was shaking like a fish out of water.

Her body trembled so violently that even the vibrations seemed to resonate with Asher.

’She’s scared out of her mind.’

The crimson eyes rolled around the house for a few moments while the other family members remained frozen in shock and dread.

Their eyes were wide with horror as they stared at the mist of smoke hovering in the middle of their house, with a pair of red eyes rolling around the whole place.

The atmosphere was tense.

Cold sweat trickled down their backs.

Jayden, even with all his muscles, was seen slightly trembling.

He was trying his hardest to conceal it as much as possible, but it couldn’t escape Asher’s observant eyes.

’He might pee his pants anytime.’

Looking back at the pair of eyes peeking from the cloud of mist, Asher frowned.

’What even is that? Unlike the Shadows, I can’t sense any aura coming off of it. Yet I know it is connected.’

Then,

The crimson eyes rolled to a stop on Asher.

It stared at him for several seconds as if trying to glare into his soul.

Asher now felt his own body shaking.

Actually, he didn’t know if it was him or if his sister was still trembling.

But something was just jittering in fear.

"Young boy...."

There was no visible mouthpiece in the cloud of mist, yet it spoke with utter chillingness and a low vibration that made all the bones in their bodies shake.

Their blood began churning like a restless sea.

Every hair rose up.

Everything in their very being was telling them to get away as fast as possible.

But they couldn’t move.

Whether they were frozen in fear or maybe this strange entity was using some sort of paralysis power on them, they had no idea.

"You have broken rules that are in place."

’R-Rules?’

"... I have been ignoring, but now I can’t anymore."

’What is it talking about?’

"I hate overly forward humans. They piss me off a lot. And you are too overly forward. If you are left going, you could do a lot of harm."

’Wh-What have I done?’

"... That was why I sent the Possessed human to take care of you, but you survived? And because of you, I lost a good asset."

’I didn’t even kill her!’

Then the eyes rolled around the whole frozen family one by one.

If the mist had a mouth, he would imagine it smiling at the moment as it continued.

"You seem like a good enough entertainment. Everybody on getting to this city gives up on trying to save themselves, but you refuse to give up, huh? I have been watching and see that you are hell-bent on escaping."

Asher’s teeth gnashed immediately.

’Could this be—?’

"So I want to be entertained. But I can’t wait too long for the game to begin, hence I’m switching up the rules here."

’What is happening?’

"Since you are a special entertainer to me, we gotta tweak the rules a bit, yeah? Ha!"

Even the laughter made one want to throw up everything they had ever eaten in their lifetime.

"So instead of waiting three weeks before the curse activates. The curse will be activating in two days for just your family. Try and survive and save them if you can."

Asher’s eyes bulged almost immediately as his heart skipped a dozen beats in a split second.

Two days?

How was he supposed to do anything in two days?!

Even the initial three weeks was a small window for him to do much, and now he had to save his family in two days?

How was he supposed to help them defeat sleep? How was he supposed to defeat this thing?

His heart was beating loudly as the mist trembled, as if it was laughing so silently that his ears couldn’t comprehend it.

This was bad.

Incredibly so.

"So. I want to see how much your determination can carry you. How long it takes before you break when you start seeing your family go into the Nightmare and die one by one. How long can you last?"

Asher’s hand slid from Jesse’s mouth.

His teeth grated loudly.

Initially, he was frozen in fear.

But on hearing that his family’s lives were threatened, an anger never seen before... never felt before, began to rise within him.

"What are you? Who are you?"

"...."

The eyes rolled at him, then lifted upward as if cocking its brows.

"Thought you were smart? How haven’t you figured it out that I’m the Shadow God? The only true ruler and creator of the Nightmare and the Curse."

As he introduced himself, the ground began trembling in response.

The remaining cutlery and plates clattered to the ground very loudly.

Everybody gulped in response.

But Asher didn’t look afraid.

He was being consumed by rage as his fists whitened from how hard he was clenching them.

Almost immediately, he turned around, walked towards the main door he had barricaded with a few chairs, and grabbed one of the wooden chairs.

He began dragging it across the ground.

The sound of wood scraping against marble echoed with powerful force throughout the tense silence of the room.

Soon, he came to a stop a metre away from his family.

Then, in one smooth motion, he pulled the chair and hurled it forward with all his strength.

The chair rushed towards the cloud of mist.

"Screw you, Bastard! I will find and murder you if ANYTHING HAPPENS TO MY FAMILY!"

The chair slammed into the cloud of dark mist and passed through it harmlessly before shattering against the ground into broken splinters.

"....."

There was a tense moment of silence, with the eyes glaring at Asher as he panted from both mental and physical exhaustion and the anger he was feeling at the moment.

"HOW DARE YOU TALK TO ME THAT WAY?! AAAAAARGH!"

The mist bellowed with such intensity that the glass windows throughout the whole house shattered in response.

The entire Dawson family quickly shielded their faces in fear of the glass hitting them.

But they were safe...

For now.

"That tone. Those words. You will eat them back up. I promise you."

Asher swung his hands away in rage.

He was ready to bark at the mist, but just as quickly as it came, the crimson eyes vanished, followed by the mist, which glided out the window like smoke.

The whole house was silent.
