Chapter 69
The door creaked open, and standing in front of him was Jesse.
"....."
She didn’t say anything for a while.
Instead, her eyes slowly scanned him from head to toe for several moments.
"Are you feeling okay?"
"Hm? Yeah? Why do you ask?"
Jesse scanned him once more before frowning.
"We had been taking turns to come wake you up, but you were deep asleep like someone who was in a coma or something. You weren’t waking up, so Mum was panicking and, in the process, got Dad to call a doctor. He is on his way.
"I just decided to come try my luck once again, and here you are. Is everything okay with you?"
Jesse asked worriedly once again as she reached forward and began looking around his body, especially his head.
Asher didn’t know what she was expecting to see there.
A hole maybe?
Chuckling nervously, he pulled back.
"I’m okay. I was just tired for some reason, so I decided to sleep in."
Jesse lifted a brow at his words, as if unconvinced by his answer.
"Tired? What did you do last night?"
Then her eyes widened like someone who had just caught a thief.
"... Did you-did you sneak a girl inside last night?"
"...?!"
"The hell? Do I look like I can do something like that?!" Asher questioned with a furious glint in his eyes.
Jesse clicked her tongue and folded her arms across her chest before nodding slightly.
"That’s right. You don’t swing that way. So which means it was Rick you sneaked in and had fun with?!"
"....."
Asher blinked once.
Then again.
And soon, he bellowed.
"I will kill you!"
Jesse chuckled, spun on her heels, and bolted away while Asher immediately gave chase.
They ran downstairs, with Asher practically flying over the steps until he reached the bottom.
Jesse skidded toward Jack and quickly jumped onto the sofa where the man sat.
Asher halted instantly.
All eyes immediately turned toward him.
"Oh?! You finally woke up?" Jayden uttered with a chuckle.
"Is that-Is that Asher I hear?" Clara called out from the kitchen.
Before anybody could reply, she rushed out and stood before her son.
"Oh, my baby. You are okay. I was worried that something had happened to you. What happened? Why did you sleep so deeply?"
Asher chuckled nervously while scratching the back of his head.
"Er.... I had been, uh... binge-watching an anime with a hundred episodes. So I kinda slept late last night. Hence, I wasn’t able to wake up on time, and neither could I hear you all trying to wake me up. My bad."
Jayden stifled a chuckle and hid his face behind his phone.
Jack eyed Asher for a few seconds before sighing and grabbing his phone.
"I guess I will have to call the doctor again and inform him not to bother."
He then walked away, leaving Clara to scan her son a few more times before clicking her tongue.
"Next time, I will beat you up if you sleep late. But for now, I pardon you."
Asher smiled nervously.
"Yeah, I promise not to do that again."
Clara beamed before patting him on the cheek and walking back toward the kitchen.
Asher breathed a sigh of relief at the fact that his secret was safe.
He then sauntered forward and collapsed onto a free sofa opposite the one Jayden and Jesse sat on.
Seeing as their parents weren’t immediately around, Jesse tried her best to shrink her presence as much as she could so as not to alert her brother.
Asher’s eyes closed for a moment.
’Ah... what a close call that was. Now, what had I been thinking about earlier?’
He thought for a few seconds before nodding inwardly.
’Ri-Right. That I had a dream that my family died?’
"...."
He cracked one eye open to glance at Jayden before recalling his father and mother.
’Hm? They look alive to me. So what the hell was that dream? Damn... I guess I need to stop watching too many horror films. My family’s here, well and alive, and I love them. Tsk.’
"Achew....."
Jesse sneezed loudly.
Asher’s eyes cracked open as he looked in her direction with a frown, recalling the earlier teasing.
Jesse froze in fright like someone caught with their hands in the cookie jar.
Asher frowned.
"Shouldn’t you be in school by now though?"
Jesse rubbed her nose before lifting a brow.
"School? What do you mean by that? Isn’t today a Saturday?"
Asher lifted a brow in confusion.
"Saturday? How is that possible? Wasn’t yesterday a Sunday? Or how many Saturdays do we have in a week again?"
Jayden tilted his head in Asher’s direction with a stoic look on his face.
He didn’t say anything, but something flashed across his eyes as he stared at Asher’s dumbfounded expression.
Jesse smiled once more and replied.
"Today is Saturday."
As if unconvinced, Asher pulled out his phone to check the date.
Opening the calendar app, he glanced at the date and froze.
The day was indeed a Saturday.
His brows knitted in confusion.
He could have sworn that Jesse hadn’t been going to school for a few days with the excuse that it was Saturday.
Or was he going crazy?
He frowned deeply while glancing at Jesse and then back at the calendar app.
Jayden exchanged glances with Jesse for a second before interrupting.
"Asher, is everything okay with you? Should I go inform Dad that he should still bring the doctor over?"
Asher stared at his brother for a second before looking back at the app in his hand.
A strange feeling was beginning to stir in his chest as he stared at the date.
He frowned before exhaling.
Shoving the phone back into his pocket, he forced a smile at Jayden.
"Yeah. I guess I’m just too tired. Hence, I might have lost track of time."
Jayden exchanged another look with Jesse before shrugging.
He turned back to whatever he was doing on his phone.
Asher, on the other hand, slumped deeper into the sofa with a blank look on his face.
But inwardly, his mind was in turmoil.
’Something is wrong. I can feel it. But what is it?’
