ShadowBound: The Need For Power

Chapter 800: A Great Teacher (2)

Liam’s gaze remained on the diagram. "So instability is caused by imbalance."

"Yes." Ariana looked relieved that the word fit. "Exactly. The core can compress Myst safely as long as the channels can match the output pace. If the core gathers and tightens too much, but the channels lag behind, the compressed Myst pushes against the internal structure instead of moving cleanly into the spell. That creates strain, heat, pain, shaking, misfires, or even backlash depending on the affinity."

Liam considered that. "Then for fire magic, the backlash would usually show as overheating, channel burn, or uncontrolled ignition."

"Yes," Ariana said, pleased. "And for dark magic, I think it would be more like internal pressure distortion or shadow bleed, though dark magic is harder because the texts don’t have any explanation on it."

"They wouldn’t."

Ariana glanced at him briefly, catching the dry edge in his voice, but she did not linger on it. Instead, she turned back to the page and drew three small examples beneath the circles.

"This is normal flow," she said, drawing a clean arrow from core to channels to spell. "This is controlled compression." She drew a tighter arrow, denser but still smooth. "And this is unstable compression." The third arrow bulged in the middle, pressing unevenly against the ring.

"The threshold begins when the compressed Myst stops moving as one current and starts pressing outward unevenly. That’s why instructors keep talking about rhythm. It isn’t just poetic. Rhythm tells the body when to compress and when to release."

Liam asked, "Then is a larger core more dangerous?"

"Not automatically."

"Why?"

"Because a larger core only means greater potential capacity. It becomes dangerous if the channels, control, or spell structure cannot keep up. Someone with a large core and refined channels can compress safely at levels another person cannot. But someone with a large core and poor regulation might hurt themselves with even moderate compression." Ariana paused, then looked at him carefully.

"That’s why people who ascend too quickly can struggle. Their core capacity increases, but their habits don’t always adjust immediately. They try to use the same control rhythm as before, but their output has changed."

Liam’s eyes sharpened slightly.

Ariana noticed but did not ask.

"So if the core changes," Liam said, "the threshold changes with it."

"Yes. And the person has to relearn where safe compression ends."

"That explains why the same spell can feel different after growth."

Ariana nodded. "Exactly. The spell might be the same, but the Myst weight behind it is not. The old rhythm becomes inaccurate."

Liam stared at the diagram.

For a moment, Ariana forgot to be nervous. She watched him think, and there was something satisfying about seeing the explanation settle into place. Liam did not pretend to understand when he did not. He did not nod just to be polite. He followed the logic, tested it, questioned it, and only accepted it when it held together. It made explaining things to him strangely enjoyable, because she could feel him actually listening.

He pointed to one of her drawings. "Then the book’s wording is misleading."

Ariana smiled, small but real. "A little. It’s not wrong, but it makes it sound like there is a fixed point where compression becomes unstable. There isn’t. The threshold depends on the caster’s core, channels, affinity, physical condition, and control rhythm."

"And spell structure."

"Yes," she said quickly. "That too. A stable spell structure gives the compressed Myst a proper shape to move into. If the structure is weak, the Myst can destabilize after leaving the channels too."

Liam leaned back slightly.

Ariana added one final note beneath the diagram, writing in neat script: Instability begins when compressed Myst density exceeds distribution rhythm and structural control.

"There," she said, then hesitated. "Does that make sense?"

Liam looked over everything she had written. He did not answer immediately, which made Ariana’s nerves return in a rush. He read the note, studied the diagrams, then glanced back at the original textbook passage. His expression remained calm, but the slight narrowing of his eyes told her he was comparing the explanation against what he already knew from experience.

"It does," he said at last.

Ariana released a breath she had not realized she was holding.

Liam tapped the edge of the diagram once. "You explained it perfectly. With this, I can write the Core Myst exam and even the Fire Magic exam without worrying about this part."

Ariana’s face warmed again. "It wasn’t that big of a deal."

"It was useful."

She looked down quickly. "I’m glad."

Liam continued studying the notes she had added, but his thoughts shifted briefly toward her. Ariana was smart. That was not new information, but moments like this made the depth of it clearer. It was not simply that she understood Myst theory well. Plenty of students could memorize and understand material. Ariana could take something difficult, separate the important pieces, arrange them into a structure, and explain them without making the listener feel stupid for not understanding it immediately. That was rarer.

She was an excellent learner and a good teacher.

That combination mattered.

Liam knew he was a good learner. He could absorb, analyze, test, and adapt. But teaching someone else was different. Teaching required patience, translation, and awareness of another person’s confusion. It required making knowledge move from one mind into another without breaking it along the way. Liam could not imagine himself doing that well, nor did he particularly want to try.

Ariana, however, did it naturally once she stopped doubting herself.

He looked at her again. "Thanks."

Ariana’s fingers tightened slightly around her pen. She tried not to look too pleased, but the effort was only partly successful. "You’re welcome."

For a brief moment, she studied him across the table. The words she had wanted to say earlier returned, pressing softly against her lips. She wanted to ask him something simple, perhaps about whether he had been doing all right lately, or whether he wanted help reviewing the rest of the Chapter, or if he thought the upcoming exams would be difficult. Anything that might keep the conversation going without making it obvious how much she wanted it to continue.

Her lips parted.

"Liam!"

Dylan’s voice cut through the quiet section of the library like a thrown brick.

Ariana’s shoulders sank.

The opportunity vanished so completely that she almost felt it leave the table.

Liam turned his head toward the sound with the slow patience of someone already disappointed by what he was about to see.

Dylan and Maxwell were approaching from between the shelves on the far side of the library. Dylan walked in front with a book tucked under one arm and a grin on his face, while Maxwell followed beside him carrying two thicker volumes stacked unevenly against his chest.

Dylan looked far too proud of himself for someone in a library, and Maxwell looked as though he had either discovered something interesting or had spent the last few minutes being forced to listen to Dylan explain why it was interesting.

Ariana could only sigh softly as they came closer.

Her quiet time with Liam had gone straight out the window.
