Silent Gods

Chapter XXI : Norns’ Hymn

The time did not stop.

It was torn.

Not like a fabric that stretches.

Like a rope that snaps.

Like a breath that breaks.

Like a heart that forgets how to live.

A mute sound crossed Freyja's realm.

Not a sound heard with the ears.

A sound heard with the bones.

A sound heard with the blood.

A sound heard with the soul.

The sound of a thread being cut.

The blood suspended in the air — black drops of void, golden drops of Freyja, red drops of the fallen — trembled once.

Then remained still.

It did not fall.

It did not move.

It no longer existed as movement.

It existed only as image.

Fenrir's fury froze mid-air, his jaws wide open in a scream that would never reach the world.

His teeth — those teeth that had bitten the sun — shone with a silver light that no longer trembled.

His eyes were two pits of crystallized fury, two stars that had stopped burning.

Hati remained suspended in mid-leap, claws ready to tear through the void.

His paws were stretched like bows that would never loose their arrows.

His body was a wave that would never break.

His fur was a cloak of shadow and moon that would never move.

Runa, with shadows writhing around her arms, remained frozen in the gesture of protection.

The shadows were serpents that had forgotten how to squeeze their prey.

Her ruby eyes were two blades that would never cut.

Her mouth was open in a word that would never be spoken.

Áskell, devoured by darkness, remained still as a statue of shadow.

The rune on his back burned — but did not move.

It was a flame that did not dance, a fire that did not consume.

The axe in his hand was raised, ready to strike — but it would never strike.

His eyes were two pits of ice and fire, two worlds that would never meet.

Njord, with the void dripping from his hands like a sea without memory, remained frozen in the gesture of destruction.

The Ginnungagap within him was suspended.

It did not expand.

It did not contract.

It did not breathe.

It was as if the void itself had forgotten what it meant to be void.

His hands of black water were stretched toward Freyja — but they would never touch her.

His mouth was open in a scream that would never reach the air.

Freyja, on her knees, with golden blood flowing from her pierced hand, remained suspended in the gesture of rising.

Her fingers were inches from the floor.

Her body was bent forward.

Her feathered cloak was torn.

Her face was an alphabet of pain.

But she did not move.

She did not fall.

She did not rise.

She was suspended between collapse and rebirth.

The entire realm became an eternal instant.

Not a second.

Not a minute.

Not an hour.

An instant that did not belong to time.

A breath held by the gods.

A cosmic painting.

A portrait of war and blood and void and love.

And then the Norns appeared.

---

They did not arrive.

They did not walk.

They did not cross any portal.

They existed.

Urd, Verdandi and Skuld emerged from the silence like three intertwined lines of light and shadow, cosmic serpents carrying the weight of destiny in their hands.

The first held a spindle. Her fingers were long, slender, made of light that did not blind. Her eyes were two pools of past time — a time that had never been told. Urd had the past like an open wound.

The second held a thread. Her fingers were agile, swift, made of movement that never stopped. Her eyes were two pools of present time — a time that had not yet stopped flowing. Verdandi was the present that burned.

The third held scissors. Her fingers were cold, precise, made of decision that never bent. Her eyes were two pools of future time — a time that had not yet been written. Skuld was the future that had not yet decided whether to exist.

They stopped at the center of the suspended realm, where the blood of the primordial void trembled like a cosmic error.

And there they waited.

The silence bent.

It was not Njord.

It was not Freyja.

It was not a known god.

It was Hœnir.

The god who does not decide.

The god who does not choose.

The god who inhabits the interval between one choice and another.

The god of suspension.

His presence had no form.

It was a void that did not belong to the sea, a silence that did not belong to death, an instant that did not belong to time.

When Hœnir appeared, the world held its breath.

The Norns turned to him.

Not with words.

With threads.

The threads of destiny moved like luminous veins, intertwining between the hands of the Norns and the void of Hœnir.

The suspended realm trembled.

---

Urd raised the past.

Her fingers touched the spindle. The spindle trembled. Time trembled.

From her hands emerged images of things already happened, things that could not be changed, things that had brought everyone there.

Ksenia born from the red desert, in the hands of Zarina who blessed her with blood and sand. The shaman's lips whispering ancient words, words no god should ever have heard. The cry of a child who did not yet know what it meant to be the boundary.

Nasrin who protected her, who hid her, who took her away from Persia to keep her safe, who watched over her like a shadow that never goes out. The secret that weighed like a chain.

Cassandra who loved her. The first glance. The first smile. The first night their hands intertwined. The promise of a future neither of them knew would be so fragile.

And then the silence. The origins Ksenia had hidden like a treasure that was also a curse.

Urd looked at Cassandra.

"The past cannot be changed," she said. "But it can be understood."

---

Verdandi showed the present.

Her thread trembled. The present trembled.

Images of what was happening in that suspended moment, images of what had been frozen in the gesture.

The bullet that arrives. The sand that rises like a furious animal. The sand that wraps around Ksenia's body like a cocoon, like a scream, like a refusal.

The transformation. The ruby veins branching along Ksenia's body like ancient maps. The eyes becoming grains of living sand. The lips turning black like ash and night.

The escape. Nasrin enveloping the throne of bones with her dark magic. The black magic taking Ksenia and the adepts and dissolving into the air.

Cassandra's broken heart. The scream that did not come out. The tears that did not fall. The void that opened inside her like a wound that would never heal.

Verdandi looked at Cassandra.

"The present cannot be stopped," she said. "But it can be faced."

"Cassandra must face her present.. her love is too strong for that girl," she continued.

---

Skuld showed the future.

Her scissors opened. The future opened.

Images of what could be, of what would be if choices had been different, of what could still happen.

A distant desert. Red sand stretching to infinity. A woman walking alone among the dunes — Cassandra. Her bare feet sink into the grains as if she were born to walk on them. Her eyes search for something on the horizon. They search for Ksenia.

A Persia that waits. A throne of sand and silk. A figure seated on that throne — Ksenia. The Daughter of the Desert. The creature born from the fracture. Her eyes are two pools of sand and storm. Her lips are black as night. But in her eyes — in her eyes there is still Cassandra.

A thread that cannot be severed. A thread that shines with its own light. A thread that stretches between the two worlds like a bridge that no one can break.

Skuld looked at Cassandra.

"The future is not written," she said. "But it can be woven."

---

Hœnir observed.

The god of suspension did not judge.

Did not decide.

Did not intervene.

But suspended.

And Freyja's realm had to be suspended.

The Norns spoke with a voice that was not voice.

"The blood spilled is too much."

"Destiny is broken."

"The realm cannot continue."

"Time must stop."

"But not all threads can be frozen."

Cassandra and Ksenia's threads shone.

They were intertwined.

Wounded.

Tense.

But alive.

Skuld touched them.

The future trembled.

"This mortal does not belong to the suspended realm."

Verdandi nodded.

"Her thread must continue."

Urd raised the past.

"Her destiny is bound to that of the Daughter of the Desert."

Hœnir spoke.

His voice was an instant that did not flow.

"Let her go."

---

Time remained frozen for the entire realm.

Except for one figure.

Cassandra.

Her tears fell.

Her breath trembled.

Her heart beat.

She was the only living creature in a suspended world.

Cassandra looked at her hands.

The hands that had struck Ksenia.

The hands that had held the gun.

The hands that had fired.

Her fingers trembled.

Her skin was still stained with golden blood — Freyja's blood.

But it was not that blood that made her tremble.

It was the memory of Ksenia.

The memory of her eyes.

The memory of her voice saying "Pull the trigger so you'll settle the score.. my love.."

Cassandra closed her eyes.

The pain was so great she could not breathe.

The pain was so great she could not think.

The pain was so great she could not feel alive.

But she was alive.

She was the only living creature in a suspended world.

She opened her eyes.

She looked at the throne of bones. The bones were shattered. The dust of calcium and marrow floated in the air like a mist of death. Freyja was on her knees, suspended in the gesture of rising. Her golden blood was suspended in the air like tears that did not fall.

She looked at Njord. The god of the sea was frozen in the gesture of destruction. The void dripped from his hands like a sea without memory. His eyes were two pits of abyss.

She looked at Áskell. Her brother was a statue of shadow. The rune on his back burned like a dying star. The axe was raised, ready to strike.

She looked at Thora. Her sister was unconscious, her body an empty shell. The thunder within her had gone silent.

She looked at Runa. The shadows writhed around her arms like serpents that had forgotten how to squeeze their prey.

She looked at the wolves. Fenrir and Hati were suspended in their attack, their jaws wide open in a scream that would never reach the world.

And she looked at the void.

The point where Ksenia had disappeared.

The point where her heart had been torn away.

"Ksen…" she whispered.

"What have I done.." Cassandra continued.

The name was a prayer.

It was an anchor.

It was the thin line that prevented the darkness from overwhelming her.

---

Eir appeared beside her.

Not frozen.

The healer had always been a bridge between worlds, and the Norns allowed her to move.

Her eyes were two pools of light that did not blind. Her hands were illuminated by a calm that did not belong to battle.

"Cassandra," she said.

Her voice was a balm.

A thread of silk that does not break.

"Come. This realm can no longer contain you."

Cassandra looked at her.

Her eyes were two pools of pain and rage and love.

"Ksenia…" she said. "Where is Ksenia?"

Eir placed a hand on her shoulder.

"She is with Nasrin."

"Where?"

"In Persia. In the desert. In the place where she was born."

Cassandra felt her heart stop.

"I shot Eir.. I shot her.."

Cassandra fell to her knees.

Her knuckles turned white.

"What have I done Eir.."

Eir looked at her.

Her eyes were two pools of truth.

"You are still full of rage. And rage will not bring you to her. Rage will drive you away."

Cassandra felt tears fall down her face.

"Then what must I do?"

"Wait. Heal. Understand."

"Understand what?"

"That Ksenia did not betray you. She protected you. And her love for you is greater than her secret. But your heart still cannot accept it."

---

Mia, the valkyrie of the moon, was not frozen.

Moonlight did not belong to Freyja's realm.

She approached Thora.

The body of the Valkyrie of Thunder was an empty shell. Her breath was weak. Her heart beat slowly.

"Thora," said Mia. "Wake up."

No response.

Mia placed a hand on Thora's forehead. Moonlight spread like a wave.

The Norns raised the threads that belonged to Thora.

"Asgard claims her."

Mia took Thora in her arms.

Moonlight enveloped them both.

In a flash, they disappeared.

---

Cassandra looked at the point where Thora had disappeared.

Then she looked at Áskell.

Her brother was still suspended in the gesture of betrayal. His axe was raised. His eyes were two pits of ice and fire.

"Áskell…" she whispered.

He did not answer.

He could not.

Time was frozen for him.

Cassandra felt the weight of everything that had happened.

Felt the weight of her choices.

Felt the weight of her love.

Felt the weight of her hate.

Felt the weight of her pain.

And she understood one thing.

She could no longer stay there.

She could no longer look at the suspended realm.

She could no longer look at the frozen bodies.

She could no longer look at the void where Ksenia had disappeared.

She had to go.

She had to find Ksenia.

She had to fix things.

---

Eir opened a passage.

Not a portal.

A thread.

A thread that led to New York.

The light was soft. The air was familiar. The smell was of asphalt and life.

"From here your destiny begins again," said the healer.

Cassandra looked at the suspended realm one last time.

And she looked at the void.

The point where Ksenia had disappeared.

"Go Cassandra.. we will meet again soon.. now you must face the consequences of your action." said Eir.

Cassandra crossed the boundary and did not look back.

---

The realm remained still.

Time remained suspended.

The Norns remained watching.

Urd, Verdandi and Skuld looked at each other.

Three eyes that saw everything.

Three destinies that crossed.

Three threads that intertwined.

"Cassandra's thread continues," said Urd.

"Ksenia's thread continues," said Verdandi.

"Their threads will meet again," said Skuld.

Their scissors closed.

The future sealed itself.

But not forever.

Because destiny is not written.

It is woven.

And the fabric can still be embroidered.

---

Freyja's realm did not fall.

It was torn from time.

A mute roar crossed the castle walls, a tremor that belonged neither to the earth nor to the sky.

The blood — too much blood — trembled once, then remained suspended in the air like a frozen rain of death.

A sea of corpses.

Bodies of soldiers, warriors.

Torn flesh, broken bones, entrails scattered like cursed seeds.

Njord's primordial void blood had corroded everything it had touched:

arms dissolved, faces without eyes, ribs opened like books of flesh.

The realm had become a cosmic cemetery, an altar of devastation.

And then the silence.

A silence that did not belong to death.

A silence that belonged to something more ancient.

Time bent.

Shattered.

Stopped.

Urd raised a thread dripping with blood.

It was the realm's past:

battles, desires, betrayals, Freyja who had loved too much and destroyed too much.

The Norns remained still.

Urd with the spindle dripping ancient blood.

Verdandi with the thread trembling like a living muscle.

Skuld with the scissors shining like a threat not yet fulfilled.

The suspended realm was a mausoleum of deities and corpses.

An altar of torn flesh, broken bones, entrails scattered like cursed seeds.

Njord's primordial void blood did not fall:

it floated in the air like a frozen rain of death,

black drops that corroded the light,

golden drops that could no longer shine,

red drops that would never touch the ground.

The silence was total.

A silence that did not belong to death.

A silence that belonged to something more ancient.

The Norns looked at the cosmic loom suspended above the realm:

an interweaving of threads that trembled like a wounded heart.

Cassandra's thread was still luminous.

Ksenia's thread was still alive.

And between them, a bridge thin as a breath.

"It is not over," said Urd.

"It cannot end," said Verdandi.

"It will not end," said Skuld.

The third Norn's scissors closed.

Not to cut.

To wait.

The loom trembled.

The threads moved.

Destiny breathed.

And in that breath, the suspended realm understood a truth that no god had ever dared to pronounce:

Freyja's realm will resume only when the two main threads become one again.

When the Daughter of the Desert and the mortal are reunited.

When Cassandra finds Ksenia.

---

The Norns turned toward Hœnir.

The god of suspension did not speak.

Did not move.

Did not decide.

But his silence was a decree.

The realm remained still.

Time remained suspended.

The gods remained living statues.

The blood remained a painting of frozen death.

And the loom of destiny remained open.

Waiting.

Waiting for two threads.

Waiting for two names.

Waiting for two hearts.

Cassandra.

Ksenia.

The future was not written, it was only waiting to be lived.
