Chapter 24: Chapter 24. In Shock

Chapter 24. In Shock

Rosa Lin’s POV

I stared at my phone for the next few seconds, wondering if I should play along with this game, but I’m not really in the current position to do that right now. I tilted my head to look at my books in front of me, and then I blew out a breath.

I’m not really good at guessing, so please, can you go straight to the point?

I quickly typed back, and then I sent it.

I waited, placing my fingers against my chin, watching the text bubble dance on the person’s side of the chat. Then the message came in:

Nope, I’m sorry. You will have to guess. I can’t just make this easy for you. 😌

I closed my eyes and traced my fingers against my forehead. I shook my head and glanced at the screen, wondering what I should type back. Maybe I should just go ahead and end this once and for all.

Then the thought came to me so hard and fast as I stared at my screen: Was it Tim?

My heart began to pound for reasons I couldn’t articulate. I sat up quickly, staring at the screen with my eyes wide. Okay, relax, Rosa. But if he was the one, how the freaking hell did he get my number?

Staring at the screen, my eyebrows squeezed as I quickly moved my fingers towards my phone’s keyboard. Then I quickly typed:

Is it you, Tim?

I froze. I deleted the message, waited again, and then typed:

Tim?

I froze for the second time, quickly deleted the message again, and then slapped my palm against my forehead. What is wrong with you, Rosa?

Maybe because I didn’t want to make a mistake and assume the wrong person, but I don’t know—my curiosity was at its height here, and my senses were not at rest after the freakiest experience I had encountered today.

Just get on with it, Rosa.

I quickly typed back:

Is it you, Tim? 🤔

I sent it without thinking twice, waiting for the reply as I bit my thumb. The text bubble danced, and then the message came back:

I’m sorry, who is Tim? 🙄

I blinked when I saw the message, my heart pounding. My fingers scrambled through the keyboard.

I’m so sorry, it’s a mistake. I just made an assumption. I guess it must not be you, then. Who are you?

The person replied: 😅😅😅😅😅😅

I tilted my head to the side as I let out a frustrated breath. Yeah, this person is definitely playing games with me.

I chuckled and shook my head, turning to the side, blinking softly. Then I typed back.

ME: I am serious. Please, I’m busy. Just get this over with.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: Okay, I’m going to give you a little clue.

I waited.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: You really look so cute trying to be stubborn and acting defiant when, in truth, you can’t resist your own desires and your cravings.

I frowned at the message that almost sounded like a parable, as the memory of Mr. Don and I sitting in his car while he served me the brownies flashed in my mind.

Oh my God, could it be Mr. Don?

I stared at my screen with my eyes wide. My heart instantly picked up speed, beating so hard it felt painful. I frowned, staring at my screen. How the hell did he get my number? I wondered, staring at the screen, my lips shaking.

Did Mia give it to him? Oh my good Lord, help me, she is such a Sly and I’m going to give her a peace of my mind after this.

Or she might not be the one and he is just simply sneaky and mischievous.

I swallowed hard. My writing and assignment that were in front of my table were instantly forgotten. The memory of it vanished like a nylon in the wind.

I quickly relaxed back in my chair, frowning and typing a message:

ME: How did you get my number?

I sent it, biting against my pinky finger and waiting as the text bubble moved up and down on his side of the chat. Then the reply came:

POTENTIAL MR DON: It’s so easy to read your mind when you’re staring at me like I’m the cutest thing you’ve seen in your life.

My jaw dropped when I saw the sentence. I blinked, and then I wiped my eyes to ensure I was seeing clearly.

Am I sure I am talking with Mr. Don? I thought, and then I quickly typed back, my hands trembling. There was no way he would send me this.

ME: Mr. Don Diaxu, is this you?

I quickly sent the message with my hand shaking, and then I waited. His reply came way too fast.

POTENTIAL MR DON: 😅😅😅😅😅😅

Is he seriously finding this funny?

I typed back:

ME: Please let me know if you are the one.

I sent it, waiting.

MR DON: Of course it’s me.

My heartbeat spiked even harder as I stared at the screen dumbfounded.

Then I saw his text bubble rolling up and down before the next message came in:

MR DON: Forget about what I said earlier. I was just teasing you. 😅

I felt my face heat up. My fingers rushed through the keyboard of my phone as I typed back immediately:

ME: You shouldn’t be sending things like that. It’s not a joke. I am a student and your niece, for heaven’s sake.

MR DON: 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

I rolled my eyes. There was no point; it was definitely still going to be a joke to him. I scoffed and then dropped my phone, attempting to return back to my assignment, pretending like I was annoyed.

My phone vibrated beside me. I looked at it and then shook my head, trying to ignore it, but then it vibrated again, forcing me to groan. I dropped my pen and picked up the phone to check his message.

MR DON: Don’t you dare ignore me 👿

The second one read:

MR DON: I know you have seen my message. Stop ignoring me. 😏

I scoffed and shook my head, then I typed back a message:

ME: Try me. 😑

This was the moment where I should drop the phone, follow according to my words, and try to be stubborn. But then I found myself still holding my phone in my hand, staring at the screen as the chat bubbles from his side danced. I found myself actively inquisitive, waiting for his next reply with a certain warmth blooming in my chest.

The chat bubbles rotated for almost a minute, and I raised an eyebrow. What the hell is he typing? That’s going to be one long-ass message.

I stared at the screen waiting, biting against the fingernail of my thumb, but the message didn’t come. After a very long while of waiting, the chat bubble finally disappeared, like he had already thought about texting me and decided it was over.

I frowned, staring at the screen, feeling a prickle of disappointment. I don’t know what made me do it, but I moved my fingers over the screen:

ME: Mr. Don, are you there?

I sent it, waiting.

I saw the message tick twice to show he had actually seen it, meaning he was still in the chat, but there was no sign of the chat bubble to show me that he was replying back.

Okay... I wondered with a frown on my face. Is he suddenly ghosting me? Is he suddenly angry?

I sent a quick message:

ME: Did I say something wrong?

Then I waited. It was obvious he was still in the chat and he had seen it, but the chat bubble still didn’t appear.

I blew out a breath and then shook my head, pressing my palm against my forehead. Why the hell am I even stressing out about this? I thought, glancing at the screen.

I finally dropped my phone and then diverted my focus back toward my books. I tilted my head to look at the wall clock by the side of the room. It was literally two minutes after 12:00 a.m.

I think I have read long enough. Maybe I should just round up, end this, and go to bed.

Just as I was done, I began packing up my books, arranging them in neat order, and then glanced at my backpack on the bed. My eyes wandered over the beautiful room Mia had given me to stay in.

I smiled softly, heading over toward the bed.

I glanced at my phone screen for the second time. He still hadn’t replied. I let out a breath and shook my head, dropping my phone against the nightstand.

Then I climbed in the bed, about to drape the covers all over my body, when a very loud roar echoed and tore through the night outside the building, making me gasp and freeze.

It sounded like that of a beast—like a wild animal, a lion, a jaguar, a tiger, whatever it was, I had no freaking idea. But I heard it, and the echo of it was still ringing in my ears.

My eyes widened as they darted around the room in shock.

What was that?
