Chapter 47: Chapter 47. New Update
Chapter 47. New Update
"Isn’t the best decision I can make right now to run?" Rosa thought, shuffling her feet in confusion where she was.
"Oh my God, who is she?"
" She is from the Lee family. I recognize her.I’ve seen her in the articles."
"Oh my God, look at such luxury, such power, such dominance."
Murmurs and whispers of the other people waiting for public transport by the bus stop filled the air. Rosa blinked, then she took a step or two towards a safer side, excluded and free from people, to keep herself distant from the raging focus and the flickering of cameras as everyone gaped at the woman who was casually walking towards Rosa with that confidence and that wicked smirk on her face that promised trouble.
Folding up her shades and then stuffing it into her purse, which she wielded in her hand, she came to a stop before Rosa.
Rosa looked her square and sharp in the eyes, keeping her face blank, trying her possible best not to reveal any sort of emotion. She gripped tightly against the handle of her travel bag.
The woman’s eyes raked all over Rosa’s body, from her face down towards her hand, and then the travel bag in front of her. "How are you doing?" she asked calmly.
Rosa didn’t reply. She maintained her stoic face.
She chuckled and then shook her head, tilting her head to the side. "Life must be treating you very well," she said. There was a mocking note in her voice.
Rosa saw her eyes darting towards the luggage, making it known that she was talking about what Rosa was wielding.
"What’s going on?" she asked. "Are you lost? Are you homeless? Don’t you have any place else to go?" she asked, with both of her eyebrows raised.
Rosa couldn’t help it. She scoffed and tilted her head to the side, shaking her head calmly.
This woman, she thought. Just what the hell is she up to now? And what does she want with me?
She exhaled, trying to calm down the super fast beating of her heart, but it was not from fear. It was from extreme, powerful, deadly rage.
"Thank you," she said calmly, keeping her voice soft, keeping the rage out of it, keeping herself steady.
She chuckled, then she adjusted herself and stepped closer. Rosa took a step backward. She froze and then looked at her with a smile on her face. "You haven’t changed," she said calmly.
Rosa stared at her for a few minutes. She nodded her head. "Thank you so much, Mrs. Lee," she said. "What do you want?" she asked.
Mrs. Lee looked at her for a long while, her eyes sharp, like she was trying to state the obvious, like she was trying to stipulate the fact that she was still nothing and nobody despite having left the Lees. It was obvious, clear in her eyes. After all, she had said it when she left.
" Let’s see how she is going to survive without us."
After a while, Mrs. Lee breathed in, her shoulders rising, her eyes darting around the sidewalk close to the bus stop. "So what are you doing? Where are you going? What are you doing here?" she asked.
Rosa kept her gaze to the ground this time, clenching her fists tightly, keeping her eyelids slightly closed, struggling with every fabric of her body and her frame not to give her a reaction. She breathed out—so many things to say, so many things to pour out and show this woman a piece of her mind, to let her know that she is not the same little weak girl she had left back about a month ago.
But what could she do? Any little move she makes now would only feed the woman’s ego, make her feel proud, give her the satisfaction of seeing her reacting to whatever attempt she was trying to make at riling her up. She folded her lips together, clenching her teeth tightly and avoiding her gaze.
Mrs. Lee leaned closer with her arms folded. "I believe I asked a question," she said again calmly. "What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?" she asked.
Rosa still didn’t reply. She kept her eyes darting around, wondering when Mia was going to come to get her. What the hell is taking her so long? she thought, clenching her fist tightly, fluttering her eyelids and trying to act as though there was nobody in front of her.
Mrs. Lee chuckled. "I see what you are doing," she said.
Rosa still didn’t respond.
She kept quiet for a few minutes, then she breathed out. "All right then. So," she said, "can we catch up? I mean, like have a little chat? If you are willing, I could take you anywhere. We could just sit down, have dinner, enjoy the nice things you’ve always loved. You know, I still remember your favorite meal," she said calmly. "I remember brownies. You still like brownies, right? I could still get them for you," she said.
Rosa didn’t reply. She folded her lips.
The audacity, Rosa thought to herself, still trying to remain calm. How dare she walk back to me, trying to make deals with me, to have some sort of discussion, as what? As friends? As acquaintances?
She couldn’t help herself. She scoffed and then closed her eyes. Don’t do it, Rosa. Don’t give her that satisfaction. She breathed out again.
"No thanks," she replied, still avoiding her gaze.
Mrs. Lee chuckled. "Come on, what’s up? What’s with the defense? Why the walls up?" she asked. "Aren’t we family? Come on, we are family after all."
"We were," Rosa said instantly, making her flinch.
Mrs. Lee looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "Whoa, what’s this? What are you doing?" she asked.
Rosa slowly looked up at her, still keeping her face still.
Mrs. Lee chuckled, tightening her arms around herself. "Are you still holding a grudge?" she asked.
Rosa swallowed hard. The fight to keep herself still was getting harder by the second.
Mrs. Lee leaned even closer. "I don’t understand what could be going on in your mind right now, Rosa, but you should have known. You are the one who abandoned yourself. Nobody left you. Nobody left you to fend for yourself. Nobody tried their best to work against your life, Rosa. We took you in. We didn’t chase you out. And despite your filthy attitude, and I am still here trying to take you in, still considering you as family. So why the negligent attitude?" she snapped.
Rosa swallowed hard. Yep. She was definitely doing it on purpose to get her angry. She chuckled, avoided her gaze again and then tilted her head to the side.
Oh good Lord, Mia, what the fuck is taking you so long? she wondered.
After waiting for quite a while, she couldn’t bear it anymore. Mrs. Lee seemed to be stepping even closer, like she was intentionally invading her privacy. The flames in her head kept boiling, raging and getting more intense. One might literally see the steam escaping from her ears.
You know what? Rosa thought to herself. I can’t deal with this anymore.
She turned around towards the opposite direction where she suspected Maya’s car would be coming from, and then she began to walk away, dragging her travel bag along with her, hearing the vibration of the tires scraping against the gravel of the sidewalk.
"You have forgotten one thing," Mrs. Lee’s voice boomed into space, calling after her. Rosa ignored her. "You do know that I’m still in charge of your fees," she said in a sharp voice that made Rosa instantly come to a halt, her heart suddenly palpitating hard and fast.
She frowned, her grip tight against the travel bag. The heat in her head climbed up a tempo. She slowly turned around, struggling with every fabric of her frame to keep herself steady, to the extent that her body was literally trembling. She looked up at Mrs. Lee, glaring at her.
"It’s okay," she said, still trying to keep her voice calm. "Then don’t bother anymore," she said. "I don’t fucking need your help."
Mrs. Lee chuckled, her head swaying from side to side with that staggering confidence and audacity, like she was the one calling the shots. She scoffed.
"I would advise you watch your mouth, Rosa," she said. "It would do you a lot of good if you control what you say and not say anything that can turn good favors away from you," she said. "Have you checked the new update on the school’s website?"
