Chapter 50. The Full Story

"What is it?" he asked with a frown, wrinkling his forehead.

Her eyelids flickered rapidly, like she was trying so hard to recover from what had just happened.

She turned towards the direction Mrs. Lee had gone, then looked back at him.

"Oh, um, she..."

She faltered. No words came out of her mouth.

Don took a few steps forward towards her, until he was standing before her.

He stared down at her with dissatisfaction in his eyes.

She took a step back.

That raw energy from him that made it feel like the air was being constricted erupted once again.

What the hell is it about this guy and his seismic aura whenever it seems like he is angry? she thought, looking up at him.

"Explain to me what that was," he said. He looked at her, but as he did, he saw eyes flutter uncontrollably. They were also glistening. The expression on her face made it obvious that whatever that woman must have told her, was certainly not pleasing.

Scorching heat surged through his chest and spiked into his brain, fueling his mounting rage. He tilted his head to the side and exhaled, looking back in the direction of the road—the expressway where the Rolls-Royce had vanished to.

Then he looked back at Rosa. Rosa was staring to the side now, fiddling with her fingers together.

He then moved his hands towards her face. He saw her flinch and freeze.

She bent her head in a way that showed she was trying to avoid his hand, staring at him suspiciously, her eyes darting from his face to his hand at intervals.

He chuckled. "What?" he asked.

"I should be asking that question," she replied. "What are you doing?"

He shook his head in amusement. "Just relax and breathe," he said.

She didn’t move, but stared at him suspiciously, her eyes tracking his hand moving closer towards the corner of her left eye. Then he wiped the stray bead of tears she realized had actually slipped.

He brought his thumb close towards her face, making her look at her tears on it. "See," he said.

Rosa blinked rapidly. She let go of her bag, moved her hand towards her face, and wiped continuously against her eyes.

He chuckled and placed both of his hands into the pockets of his long coat, watching her. She continuously rubbed her hand vigorously against her denim shorts, her flickering eyes moving left and right, up and down, like she was confused about where to look.

He sighed, "You see, that’s the reason why I actually want to know what’s going on with you. You’ve been crying and you didn’t even realize it. What did that woman say to you?"

Rosa blinked and then looked back up at him. She opened her mouth. What was she to say? She shook her head and then quickly looked away.

"It’s nothing," she said, staring at her bag and gripping its handle like it was a lifeline.

"Don’t lie to me," the crease returned back to his forehead as he raised an eyebrow.

She didn’t reply.

He breathed.

"So that’s it? You’re going to keep lying to me?" he asked.

Rosa looked back up at him and then moved her hands, rubbing her neck. "For real, it’s nothing. It’s, uh... she is someone that I knew. You know, someone that I avoided. We just... I avoided her. A long time ago, we were just discussing—"

"Discussing about what?" he asked. "What could you be discussing about that would make you suddenly tear up in front of her and make her smile like she was after your life?"

Rosa blinked and looked up at him. Why is he so invested in my life? she wondered. Then she breathed out and squared her shoulders.

"You know, I should be asking why you followed me," she said, raising both of her eyebrows defensively.

She saw the moment the anger in his expression shifted. He closed his eyes and then breathed out, turning to look to the side, clearly avoiding her gaze. He raked his fingers through his hair.

They were standing in the center of the walkway close to the bus top, and a few people were already beginning to get frustrated.

He held Rosa and dragged her to the side. She dragged her luggage as well, looking at him with a raised eyebrow.

He chuckled. "Sorry, we were starting to get in people’s way," he said.

She nodded.

She still didn’t say anything, but with the way she was looking at him, he knew she was expecting answers.

How the hell do I begin to say this? he thought to himself, staring at her with a frown and a raised eyebrow. I actually followed her out to ask about Tim. But after witnessing what I just saw, I’m not even sure now is really a good time to continue asking that.

After staring at her for far too long, he shook his head and breathed out. Running his fingers through his hair that fell over his face, he brushed the strands aside and chuckled.

"It’s nothing serious," he said quickly, placing his hands back into the pockets of his coat. "I just... I wanted to see that you got home safely, and then maybe, you know, escort you or something, if you’re okay with that."

Rosa looked up at him. "That’s weird. When I left your apartment, why didn’t you make it evident that you wanted to see me off?" she asked.

He chuckled. "I, uh... I was just lost," he said.

She didn’t know why that sentence suddenly ressurected the images of everything that happened between them in his mansion, flashing in her mind like a TV on rewind.

She flinched. Her eyelids fluttered uncontrollably as she avoided his gaze and looked to the side. Her face instantly heated up, and her heart began to palpitate for a reason she couldn’t explain.

Oh sweet Jesus, she thought to herself, why the hell is my mind reminding me about those embarrassing moments now?

Ah, goodness me, she thought, squeezing her eyes tight, avoiding his gaze and turning her head to the right as she folded her lips, tightening her grip against the handle of the bag she was holding. She suddenly clutched it to herself like it was her savior, her only lifeline.

Jeez, she couldn’t contain the heat that filled up her head. It felt like it was about to explode. The image kept tormenting her. He saw my nakedness. She kept repeating like a mantra. He saw my breasts. Oh my God!

She shook her head quickly. She heard him chuckle, and she flinched. Is he seriously finding this funny right now?

She swallowed hard, fluttering her eyelids and using her hair as a shield to hide her face away from him.

"Um, you... you... you... um... you... do... don’t worry about it," she said quickly. "I’m good," she said as a nervous chuckle escaped her lips. "Just forget about me. I’m fine. You don’t have to worry about me. Mia is coming to pick me up soon."

He didn’t reply.

She blinked, wondering why he wasn’t saying anything. "Didn’t you hear me?" she asked without looking at him.

"Um, I didn’t know you were talking to me," he said.

She flinched. Is he kidding with me right now?

"I mean, if you’re talking to someone, you look at them straight in the eyes, right?" he asked.

She groaned at that. Yeah, he was definitely doing this on purpose, probably enjoying seeing her get embarrassed.

"What are you shy about?" he asked.

She flinched and slowly turned her head to look at him through the corner of her eyes.

He chuckled and then shook his head. "It was an honest mistake, okay? I can’t promise you that image will leave my head, but it’s not like I’m thinking about it every time," he said.

She glared at him, her eyelids fluttering. "Pervert," she said.

He chuckled and looked to the side, unable to contain the smile on his face.

She waved her hand at him. "Just go, forget about me. Mia is coming soon."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I’m sure," she replied, still avoiding his gaze.

He nodded his head slowly. "Okay, great. I guess that’s fine then. I’m just going to wait for you here until she comes."

She closed her eyes tight, folding her lips. Well now, I want to facepalm him so hard, she thought, fluttering her eyelids.

They stood side by side in a far corner of the bus stop, ignoring the passersby walking to and fro. Everybody minded their own business. He folded his arms, staring down at her. She avoided his gaze, turning her head to the other side, clearly feeling the heat of his gaze pressed against the back of her head, raking all over her body.

God, he should just stop staring at me, she thought. Or it could probably be her imagination—she couldn’t tell. All she knew was that she felt watched.

The silence stretched for far more than she could bear. Then she heard him sigh beside her.

"So you’re really not going to tell me about the woman?" he asked.

Rosa fluttered her eyelids. She closed her eyes for a fraction of a second, letting out a soft breath. Well, it’s not like I actually have a choice, she thought to herself.

She finally looked ahead, bending her head down and staring at her bag that was clutched against her leg. "It’s my foster mom," she said.

She felt him flinch beside her. "Wait a minute. You mean the woman who was supposed to watch over you when your family died? The woman who you’ve been living with all this while?" he asked.

"Yep," she said.

"I’m sorry I didn’t bother to ask you earlier. I’ve been meaning to figure out why you actually left her," he said. "I was stunned when I figured out that you were looking for a job when she was actually supposed to be taking care of you, I wasn’t around to question it. I just had to do my best to help you."

He paused, then continued, "But I’ve never naturally asked about the full story. What happened to both of you? What was she talking to you about right now?" he asked.
