Chapter 55. Way Too Much

Bloody fucking hell.

The thought ran through Rosa’s mind as she gripped her phone tightly. She saw her knuckles whiten and the veins bulge through her skin trying to control the exasperation and clouded rage threatening to draw a scene.

Oh good Lord, she thought to herself.

"This is definitely her doing," she murmured.

"What?" Mia asked beside her, holding her breath for a moment as she turned away from her own phone to look at Rosa.

Rosa didn’t bother to look back at her.

Mia frowned, angling her head to the side as she watched Rosa scroll through her screen. Rosa’s eyebrows squeezed together in frustration, her eyes sharpening into slits.

Rosa’s face held that same expression that revealed the displeasure born deep within her chest. She just wanted to vent. She wanted to explode.

A worried expression crossed Mia’s face as she leaned in close to Rosa and gently placed a hand against her wrist.

Rosa flinched, but her eyes slowly turned to look at Mia’s hand. She closed her eyes and sighed softly.

"Are you okay?" Mia asked.

Rosa didn’t reply, merely folding her lips together.

Mia dropped her phone to the side and shifted against the sofa, moving closer to Rosa while keeping her hand on her wrist.

"What’s wrong?" she asked softly.

Rosa lifted her hand, breathed out, and handed her phone to Mia.

Mia stared at her, looked at the phone, and slowly took it. Her eyes went to the screen, staring at the message board notice that Mrs. Lee had sent. She frowned.

"Okay, this is very, very weird," Mia said, scrolling through the screen. "I thought the deadline for the university payments was usually on the first day of the second month of every new semester." She turned to look at Rosa.

Rosa chuckled weakly, crashing her back against the sofa and folding her arms, ignoring her ruffled hair falling over her face.

"What can I say?" she replied softly. "Someone is out to get me."

Mia turned to look at her with a deepened frown, her eyes darting back and forth as she processed the sentence. "Who?" she asked.

Rosa exhaled heavily, her shoulders lifting and descending quickly. "Who else if not Mrs. Lee?" she replied.

Mia’s frown deepened as she clenched her fists together. "Mrs. Lee... I don’t understand."

Rosa instantly recognized the danger in Mia’s voice. Snapping out of her daze, she slowly turned to Mia.

"Oh," she said quickly. "Nah, it’s—it’s not that. I shouldn’t have said that, that was a mistake." She quickly took her phone back. "Let’s just forget about it."

"Are you fucking kidding me, Rosa?" Mia said.

Rosa closed her eyes and curled her toes. Shit, she thought to herself.

"What did she do this time?" Mia asked.

Rosa breathed out, weakly resting her hand against her forehead.

Mia grabbed her arm. "Don’t hide this from me, Rosa. Or else I’m going to transfer this aggression onto you."

Rosa flinched and turned to her. She saw it was of no use—there was no keeping it from Mia. She suddenly realized she was about to unleash the dark side of Mia that came out whenever she was deeply frustrated.

She breathed out. "Okay, so long story short: before you came to pick me up at the express, where I was with Mr. Don, Mrs. Lee had already confronted me before he arrived."

Rosa saw Mia’s eyes widen in disbelief. Redness appeared at the corners of her eyes as she squinted, looking as if she were on the verge of combusting, barely holding herself back.

Mia closed her eyes, inhaled, and exhaled. "Really, huh?" she asked. "And what did she say?"

Rosa scratched her head. "Well, according to the whole story—I don’t know how I forgot about it—I was registered under the Lee Foster Foundation. So she came to remind me about that and told me I can’t break free from the family forever. She said she needs my help with something and that I should think about it soon. And she’s withholding the payment of my fees until the deadline passes. So I literally have two days to think about accepting her proposal. Or else she won’t pay my fees, and my life is literally on the line right now. So, I guess that’s that," she said hesitantly, anticipating the fury that was going to erupt.

And sure enough, it did.

Mia instantly shot off the sofa, folding her arms and pacing about the living room.

"Hey," Rosa muttered, closing her eyes. "Look, I don’t want us to overthink this—"

"Are you kidding me?!" Mia slammed her foot down and interrupted her.

Rosa flinched. Mia stared at her with wide eyes.

"Wait, if I didn’t ask you, were you really planning to keep this from me?" she asked.

Rosa closed her eyes and took a breath. "No, no, no, it’s not like that. I was just—I’m sorry, I was just occupied thinking about how to sort this out."

Mia stared at her, both eyebrows raised in disbelief. "Really? And how were you planning to sort this out?"

Rosa exhaled. "I don’t know, maybe take out a loan or something."

Mia scoffed. "You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!" she muttered.

Rosa looked down, picking at her fingernails.

Mia looked to the side, resting both hands against her waist. She turned around in frustration, pressing a palm against her forehead.

"God fucking knows I can’t believe this. I can’t believe she would actually have the audacity to walk up to you and threaten your career, your education. Just what the fuck!" she exclaimed.

Rosa slowly looked back up at her, dreading to say anything else that might increase Mia’s agitation.

"You can’t listen to her!" Mia snapped, looking down at Rosa as her eyelids fluttered.

"I know, but... my school fees, how do I go about that?" Rosa asked softly. "I really do not have anywhere else to turn to. And the semester fees have been increased—I don’t know if you’re aware. It’s currently $600,000 now. I was hoping I would have enough time over the next few months to raise the usual fees by working at Mr. Don’s mansion, but now time isn’t on my side and the new fees is just.. out of proportion."

Mia stared at her with a sharp frown, her eyes narrowed like blades and her jaw clenched. She looked as if she were barely holding it in.

Rosa noticed this instantly. She flinched and brought her hands down to her lap, her eyes darting left to right, wondering what was going on in Mia’s mind.

"I will fund you," Mia said out of the blue.

The sentence felt surreal, making Rosa flinch. She slowly looked up at Mia. "I’m—I’m sorry, what?" she asked.

Mia scoffed. "I can’t believe you right now," she said. "I said, I am going to fund you. You need $600,000 to pay off your fees within the next two days, right? I will fund you."

Rosa gaped at her. "But don’t you have your own school fees to worry about? Isn’t that going to be way too much?"
