Chapter 715: Chapter 715: Coexistence

"<Alright, you two, ready>?" Inquired Ai, as she glanced between the two of us.

"Mhm, sure am," Responded Aria with a thumbs up.

"Yup, take it away, Professor Ai," I added with a grin.

Today’s the 7th of April, 2172. A couple of days have passed since the party at the Sinners Guild. Aria and I were currently inside the Pocket Dimension, along with Ai in her summoned physical form.

She had a large holographic screen on display behind her, with the presentation on Mutants I’d asked her to make for us.

"<Before we start...why couldn’t I have just uploaded the information straight into your brains instead of doing all this? Was summoning me really necessary>?" She inquired with a sigh.

"That brain upload thing is kinda disconcerting, I don’t like it," I responded sheepishly.

"And besides, it’s been ages since we last saw you in your physical form. Your boobs look even bigger than I remember," Added Aria with a grin.

"<They are the exact same size, my physical form can’t change. Fine, whatever, let’s just get to it, shall we>?" She replied with a slight grumble.

"Sounds good, lay it on us," I nodded, as she tapped on the screen.

"<Alright, let’s begin with what makes Mutants different to Monsters and animals. Like Monsters, Mutants have Mana, but they can’t evolve like Monsters can. For food, they exclusively target creatures that possess Mana. In other words, Mutants eat other Mutants and humans>."

"Does that mean all Mutants are carnivorous?" Aria asked her.

"<Yes, that’s right. They have no interest in plants, and the same goes for normal animals. However, many Mutant species are highly territorial, so they may still attack and kill any animals that they find in their territories. Also, Mutants are especially attracted to human Mana.

Human Mana tends to be more stable and pure than Mutant Mana, since humans have had more time to adapt and evolve with Mana, not to mention the process of Tabulization. As a result, the Sanctuary domes have been equipped with Mana dampeners, making it impossible for Mutants to sense the Mana of the people inside the Sanctuaries.

Otherwise, Mutants would be swarming around the Sanctuaries, trying to break in. Shortly after we were summoned to the other world, that’s exactly what happened, scores of Mutants were drawn to the Sanctuaries. Fortunately, the HUC figured out what was happening before too many Mutants gathered and implemented the Mana dampening technology>."

"That must mean they’re highly sensitive to Mana," Surmised Aria thoughtfully.

"<Very much so, yes. When Hunters venture out on Quests, the vehicles transporting them are also equipped with the Mana dampening technology, so the Mutants won’t be able to sense them until they exit the vehicles>," Explained Ai in response.

"I see. And how dangerous are Mutants compared to Monsters?" I inquired curiously.

"<That’s what I was going to cover next. The HUC has classified Mutants using the same Threat Level categories that were used for Monsters, but they’ve added a new category to it. It goes, Low Level, Mid Level, High Level, Critical Level, Calamity Level...and then Catastrophe Level. Since Mutants have Mana, classifying them was a simple matter of measuring their Power Levels.

The massive snake-like sea creature that Isla Hinger mentioned, the one that was big enough to swallow Dragons whole, is one such Catastrophe Level Mutant, the species has been named Leviathan. Seven Mutant species powerful enough to fall under that category have been identified, and so far, no Catastrophe Level Mutants have attacked the Sanctuaries>."

"Well, that isn’t ominous at all. Besides Catastrophe Level, do the Mutants classified under the other categories pose around the same level of threat and danger as the Monsters of the same categories?"

"<Yes. Low Level Mutants are more or less just as dangerous as Low Level Monsters, the same applies to the rest. Critical Level Mutants are about on par with Aces, and Calamity Level Mutants are on the level of Archdemons, Dragons and King Ants.

And as for Catastrophe Level Mutants, the weakest recorded had a Power Level of above eight million, and the strongest above ten million. But it isn’t that simple, the actual threat they pose isn’t fully indicated by their Power Levels alone. There’s also their sheer size to consider, almost all of the identified Catastrophe Level Mutants are tremendously massive>."

"What about habitats? The Leviathans are aquatic, right? Don’t suppose the rest of the Catastrophe Level Threats are sea creatures too?" Aria asked her warily.

"<No, of the seven identified species, only two reside in the ocean. One being the Leviathan, and the other a species called the End Kraken, which is exactly what it sounds like, a massive, deadly squid-like creature.

I should say, most of the Mutant species that have been identified are land-based creatures. The HUC deployed hundreds of satellites with powerful cameras and Power Level Readers to identify and classify Mutants.

Naturally, there’s almost certain to still be hundreds, if not thousands, of sea-based Mutant species that are yet to be identified. To a lesser extent, the same applies to the land-based species as well.

Currently, the HUC is keeping track of all known Catastrophe Level Mutant locations, and Hunters are under strict orders to go nowhere near those areas>."

"Yeah, with creatures that powerful, the best course of action is to just let sleeping dogs lie. Don’t poke the bear and all that, unless absolutely necessary. We could handle a a couple of so of them at a time, but if we were to get swarmed by a pack of Mutants with Power Levels around the ten million range, we’re probably fucked," I nodded grimly.

"Agreed. And with all of us X-Aces disappeared for the last year, even considering attacking those creatures would’ve been completely out of the question. I hope the HUC doesn’t get the idea to make us go hunt down the Catastrophe Level Threats.

Like you said, Kai, it’d be one thing if there were just a handful of them, but there’s every possibility that there could be more of them than we might assume.

The last thing we want to do is kill a member of a vengeful species that leads to a whole swarm of them seeking us out for payback," Added Aria in agreement.

"Yeah, coexistence should be the long-term goal, the same way things were with wild animals in my old era. Let’s hope the HUC and Concord see it the same way."
