Skyrim: Orebane

Chapter 119: Shifting

I had dozens of other strange things as well though the majority were at least explainable beyond something a madman made. And then there was the gifts of the Princes themselves. Each one was a prize that would command vast sums of resources if put up for trade or sale.

Yes, even the ring of plague.

While it was certainly a dreadful thing it had it's uses. For example you could create diseases that had benevolent traits. Perhaps a disease that made made you need less food and water to live? Or perhaps one that made your skin thicker like natural armoring? -

With creative use of the ring you could do a plethora of things that while technically disease were more beneficial than not. The goblet that Sanguine gave me was by far my favorite though. Three times a day I could have any beverage I desired. The trick here is that there was no rule that said you had to drink it. There was also no rules saying WHAT exactly counted as a beverage. Thanks to this and a test I did I learned that the legendary Lorkhan's tears could be summoned three times a day. -

By definition a beverage is any liquid that you might consume. As the solution to highest end potions Lorkhan's tears were both a liquid AND something you'd consume, fulfilling the condition. Definitely NOT what Sanguine likely had in mind with the thing but that wasn't my problem now was it? The other things I was gifted were considerably more niche but had their uses. The pinnacle soul gem Boethiah gifted me would, in theory, allow me to soul trap a demi-prince or dragon soul. Demi-princes were basically daedra that were one step below the princes because they had great power but no divine domains. This seemed small but the difference between a prince and a demi-prince was a vast gulf because of it.-

Vile's gift of the Dwemer artifact Keening was like most of his "gift's" a trick. The artifact was quite famous because it was what the Tribunal had used to sort of become mortal gods for a time. The trick however was that the artifact was a death sentence if used without the other two parts of the set, Wraithguard and Sunder. My deal with Mora for the tonal knowledge of the Dwemer revealed WHY this was. -

The Dwemer believed that everything existed in a state of frequency. Through this belief they learned how to manipulate these frequencies to in turn manipulate reality. This was the essence of tonal magic, the altering of reality through sound. What the tools of Kagrenac did were manipulate a VERY specific type of frequency, the one that the Heart of Lorkhan had. The tools did this through a clever little distribution of work. Sunder caused the energies of the heart to resonate and rise out of the heart, Keening fine tuned these energies to the wielders will and Wraithguard protected the user from the raw energies. -

Together one could freely manipulate the hearts energies with little fear unless you went too far. The Tribunal used the tools to tie their own divine powers to that of the heart thus effectively sharing the divinity of Lorkhan amongst themselves. It's uncertain how Dagoth managed to tamper with this connection to forcefully twist it into giving him the same divinity by siphoning it from the Tribunal but that's how he did it. It was why as his power waxed theirs waned. The Nerevarinne had used the tools to cast the heart away to a place no one knew anymore while cutting all connection to it off.-

This killed Dagoth and as their stolen divinity dried up the Tribunal themselves save Vivec who had achieved Chim and thus was no longer fully dependent on the stolen power. If the records are right in fact Almalexia went mad with desperation after she started to fade and murdered Sotha Sil to prolong her power only for the Nerevarinne to kill her to end her rampage. The fate of Vivec is unknown to date as he vanished entirely shortly before the Oblivion crisis.-

Anyways the point was that Keening was incredibly valuable but functionally a death sentence without it's other tools. Only Mora and Hircine's gifts remained as a physical things to be cataloged. Hircine's was the easiest as it was a bow carved from a pure white wood that had feathers tied onto it's limbs, it possessed a string of cured tendon. The bow was simply enchanted to take the first arrow strung on it and absorb it. Once that was done every time the string was drawn back your magicka would get pulled into the bow to form an exact copy of the arrow. The copy functioned just the same as normal but vanished the moment you pulled the string again as a new arrow was made.-

Honestly it was a gift that any hunter worth a damn would want, very in line with Hircine. Mora's gift was a lot more troublesome. Not in the same way Vile's was but because it was a tome that was clearly very important somehow but written in a language I simply didn't know or even recognize for the matter. If I were in Skyrim I could copy some of it and send it to the college to see if anyone could figure out what it was but alas, I was in Hammerfell.-

Finally after nearly an entire day of work I had categorized everything I received from that party outside of my deal with Mora. The weapons I wasn't worried about were all fed to my blade and caused dramatic changes to it. This was a bit over a hundred different weapons after all so I completed three full material shifts in my blade all at once and nearly four incomplete ones. The ones I completed were the Dwarven metal, Malachite and Galatite shifts. -

The incomplete ones were Calcinium, silver, quicksilver and ebony. Of these four silver was the closest to being complete followed by quicksilver then Calcinium and ending with ebony. Considering a good portion of these weapons also carried enchantments of various sorts my blade now sported a monstrous twelve different enchanted functions. It would have been more but duplicate enchantments melded together and redundant enchantments that basically did the same thing as another in a different way also fused. For example the soul trap enchantment got fused into the soul stealer enchantment. My blade now looked like a solidified rainbow of unhinged colors.
