Skyrim: Orebane

Chapter 125: Explaining

"You! Ha~ Yes you are right." he said with a sigh.

"I know" I said with a chuckle that rumbled from my chest.

"Were you injured?" he asked eyeing the parts of my body visible.

"Not at all. Not to boast but there was no chance for me to get injured. I was very deliberate with my method of dismantling that force." I said calmly.

"Yes, the one thousand trained Thalmor soldiers and mages. How exactly did you defeat such a force all by yourself?" he asked curiously.

"Okay so to start with I found a spot roughly on the path they would be taking to reach here with a relatively narrow stone passage behind me and open sand to my front. I then used a spell to create a massive slab of stone from the sand and a barrel of blood to carve a huge magical formation onto it. I then used the language of dragons to create a harmonic signature that I piggybacked off of to create counter anchors that I planted in a set area. I then created a massive flag with the Thalmor symbol on it but defamed to draw the army into the trap." I paused to let that sink in for a second.

"You goaded them with their pride." he said with a gleam of approval.

"Indeed. Once they walked into my harmonically isolated field I sprung the trap by crushing at least thirty petty, lesser and plain level soul gems and sending that energy into the formation while shouting the initiation word. This caused a sandstorm with razor like sand to rise and swallow the army and myself. Unlike them who are soft and vulnerable my skin is like iron and the sand bounced off harmlessly. I covered my eyes that were still vulnerable with a ward and used the cover of the sands tearing them apart to slip into their ranks and kill without scruples." I said with a smirk.

"That couldn't have lasted long. Large scale magics rarely do from what I understand." he pointed out.

"That's right but by then I had already slain at least half the mages and a good quarter of the soldiers in the army. I retreated as the sandstorm started to die down and used a war tier spell to wipe out the rest of the mages and another quarter of the soldiers. This left me dealing with only the last quarter of the army that numbered roughly two hundred and fifty. " I said painting the picture.

"You must have been exhausted of magicka after that right? War tier magics are no cheap tricks." he said worriedly.

"I was running on fumes and drank a magicka recovery potion as I hopped off my high point and into the rock passage to narrow their charge. Naturally I had chosen this location for more than this as when a good half of the remaining army had funneled into the passage I let them taste the unbridled fury of my voice." I said and he looked confused.

"You... yelled at them?" he asked with a funny expression.

I shook my head "I mean the ancient art of shouting. I used a full power three word Thu'um on them." I clarified.

"You know how to shout!?" he exclaimed in shock.

"I forget that you must have only heard of it via whatever tales Ulfric left during the war and whatever records about Tiber Septim exist in the Summerset isles. Yes I know how to shout. I have been training in the art since I was very young. It is after all a skill like any other, just considerably more spiritual than most and harder to learn." I said frankly.

"I don't understand. If it's just a skill why don't more learn it?" he asked with a frown.

I held up three fingers "Three reasons mainly. First it's slow to learn. You don't just learn a word and then can shout apart a wall, it doesn't work like that. You first have to learn the word, then understand it on a deep level until the word resonates in your very soul. Only then can you ATTEMPT to shout. The next step after learning a word is understanding how to tap into your Su'um, your vital essence." I paused to let that sink in before continuing.

"Then you must project your Su'um into your throat and channel the Thu'um as you speak. Mortal throats were not made for this power however and can be seriously damaged without proper care and rest between attempts. I reduced this problem greatly for myself which is why my voice sounds like this but that's not the standard procedure. Just learning to shout a single word can take upwards of a month or MORE depending on talent. The effect of a single word is not very great usually however, barely comparable to an apprentice level spell." I say pausing again before continuing.

"The second reason is scarcity of materials on it. Much like magic and other things knowledge on the Thu'um is kept preserved by only a single group and found in incomplete snippets outside of there. My own learning of it was done using these and not nearly as smooth as it could have been with proper resources on the matter." I say pausing yet again.

"And the final reason is tied to the second. Tradition has dictated that all who would learn the art do so through the Greybeards. It's not a rule exactly but simply the way it has always been done since Jurgen Windcaller founded the order. The problem with it is that part of the criteria for learning it is that you must use the knowledge you gain in the way the order does. That is to say never for war or battle and only in a way that glorifies the gods who gifted mortals with the ability to learn it at all. Frankly speaking Ulfric has broken that oath by using it during the great war. " I finished seriously.

"So the entire art is all but restricted to that single group?" he asked with a weird expression.

"Indeed, it's ridiculous but that's just how things ended up. To be frank I am at least half sure that the group knows that a rogue tongue is loose in the world but haven't moved to stop or absorb me since I haven't actually broken any rules, merely went outside tradition." I said helplessly.
