Raven lets me lead the way after we finally reach the shack. It is about the same as when I left for the hunt which is a relief.
As I reach the door I can hear someone else behind us.
"You made it back in one piece," Ash speaks up.
I quickly turn around to see Ash after the long hunt that I experienced.
"Yeah. It was definitely quite an interesting fight against a dragon for the first time," I reply with a calm tone in my voice.
"I imagine it was quite a challenge," Ash says while observing me.
"It was. I nearly died trying to kill it but I need to speak with the elder," I reply while glancing over my shoulder at the door.
"Go ahead inside. He’s probably already aware that you are back," Ash says with a look of relief on her face.
She must be happy that I made it back alive and in one piece. I don’t think she expected me to come back since I was very inexperienced.
I mean... I still am, just now I learned some more about fighting an actual dragon.
As I open up the door to the shack I can see the elder sitting in the corner pouring his tea as usual.
He glances up at me and then back to his tea.
"I knew you’d make it back Kain," The Elder says with a confident tone.
"It was still quite dangerous for me," I reply with a serious tone.
Raven silently approaches from behind me.
"He really is special though. I witnessed quite the sight in person," Raven chimes in.
The Elder immediately looks over at Raven with a surprised look on his face.
"What exactly did you see child?" He asks with curiosity in his voice.
"Kain absorbed something from the dragon," Raven answers without any hesitation.
The Elder doesn’t even seem to know who Raven is, yet he is listening to her with no problems or questions. I didn’t even get to properly introduce her to anyone yet either.
I trust him but he isn’t bothered in the slightest about a random person entering the shack.
"Everything so far is turning out to be true. It was only a bunch at first but now I’m certain," The Elder says while looking towards me.
"What do you mean?" I ask with confusion in my voice.
"You definitely have a gift. One that no other slayer has ever seen but there is still a long road ahead for you," The Elder responds with a serious expression on his face.
Silence lingers for a few moments after that.
I already kind of knew that the system thing is special because of a conversation with it previously. It told me about how others couldn’t access it like me.
Then again, it isn’t a free pass to get stronger either. I still have to work for everything which is the only way I could see it anyway.
"I’m Raven. I apologize for not introducing myself properly before speaking," She introduces herself as she gives a bow.
"I appreciate the apology but it wasn’t needed. It is nice to meet you Raven," The Elder replies with a small smile.
He gestures for us to take a seat across from him so that’s exactly what we both do. The room is pretty quiet though, almost like he has been in here himself the whole time.
Creak.
The door opens from behind us and I can hear someone enter the room.
"So I heard the name Raven mentioned," Ash speaks up with her arms crossed.
"Yes, that is me. I apologize I didn’t introduce myself earlier," Raven responds with a genuine tone.
Ash looks at me for a moment and then back at Raven.
"I don’t really mind. I’m Ash. We all are fighting back against the dragons so it feels best to introduce myself," Ash introduces herself.
I don’t really know what to make of this since they are all getting along just fine. I’m not complaining, just surprised.
Something in me felt as if they were going to argue for some reason.
~What would cause the argument?
I jump slightly as the voice gives me a bit of a scare.
Everyone appears to be looking my direction after that since it was out of nowhere that I jumped.
"I’m good. Just zoned out for a moment," I explain with a soft tone.
They all just shrug it off as Ash makes her way over to the table as well.
I just thought that she’d be seen as an outsider since no one here knows her. Usually that’s how it went back in my village so it felt pretty normal.
~You didn’t treat her that way.
Because we met in the middle of the battlefield technically. It felt like a pretty normal thing, plus she is a slayer as well.
I couldn’t treat her like some outsider when she saved my life and watched my back out there. It would just be wrong.
~Acknowledged.
"The question is, what’s next?" Ash asks before anyone else can.
"We’ll need to educate Kain more on the way slayers operate, fight, and how the continent treats them. That would be the next best course of action," The Elder answers with no hesitation.
"I thought that’s exactly how Ash was training me?" I question.
"No. She was just showing you how to properly use a sword and how to properly fight. None of that would be fully effective against dragons," The Elder explains.
"Hey, that isn’t true. It obviously did him well in the actual hunt," Ash chimes in with a bit of frustration.
The Elder takes a sip of his tea.
"But there is a more specific way for a slayer to actually fight a dragon," The Elder says while looking towards Ash.
I’m definitely lost here. I don’t really know much about slayers other than the fact that they fight against the dragons in the current war.
And some brief stuff from stories growing up... That’s it.
