Our night goes by after that, we just rest up at the settlement for awhile.
The thought of what lies ahead is kind of intense, but I think I’m ready for it. As ready as a slayer can be.
I’ve killed a good bit of dragons at the very least so I’m not completely inexperienced... I just haven’t fought in the more intense battles yet. I don’t think it’ll take long for me to experience it either.
"You ready to go Kain?" Sylvia asks while standing in front of me.
"Yes," I answer as I take one last look around.
The people here are just living their lives, even though they live within such close proximity of the war.
My eyes dart towards the road.
It is still open so that is our chance.
"No need for us to waste any time then," Sylvia says before grabbing my arm.
She immediately drags me along to the road I was staring at. It looks a lot more rough when you actually get over to the road itself, but that just adds some character to it.
"This is the path towards Zameref. Let’s continue," I speak with a serious tone.
"Let’s go,"
We continue along the road, keeping an eye out for anything that may or may not approach us here. Nothing really makes itself known to us on the journey.
It is mostly silent with no real sign of enemies... Or people.
Sylvia and I remain on guard most of the walk.
The battlefield is getting closer and closer. I can feel the intensity from here and we haven’t even seen any of the fighting.
I think that says a lot about Zameref itself.
All the reactions people have to the name, the intensity from the area, and even the overall mindset people have with Zameref. That all leads to the dragons who caused it.
A war against humans.
I really don’t think I’d ever be able to forgive them for what they did. Good or not.
Dragons brought this war upon us and killed so many innocent people in the process. I don’t really have it in me to completely spare the ones who...
~So if a dragon approaches you and it doesn’t attack, you’ll kill it?
I’d have to. We are slayers for a reason... They also brought it upon themselves.
~I will remember your response.
Everything continues in silence after that for about an hour.
In the distance I can finally see some structures that appear to be related to slayers. Most are burnt down or falling apart, but you can tell this is the battlefield itself.
Bodies slowly begin to appear as well now. Most have talon marks left across their armor and into their skin while some are burnt to a crisp.
Step. Step.
I look down to see most of the weapons they used against the dragons are shattered as well.
I didn’t think it’d be this brutal... I was wrong.
The dragons out here are really ruthless.
"It is about what I expected," Sylvia speaks up with a somber tone.
"You expected this?" I question with a bit of shock.
"We’re in a war against dragons and this is exactly where everything started. Yes, I expected it," Sylvia answers with a bit of frustration in her voice.
I don’t think she’s frustrated with me, she’s frustrated with what we are seeing. All of these dead slayers and even some people who just came to help are scattered around the area.
I’m pretty frustrated myself... Just I don’t want to take anything out on her.
"We should keep our weapons drawn for the time being," I suggest.
She just gives a nod before pulling out her sword.
With that we follow the road still, watching for any sort of movement that could appear.
Nothing, absolute silence the entire time.
I continue to observe the scenery around us.
It is actually bizarre how we haven’t seen a single dragon since we entered the area. There wasn’t any sort of signs that said Zameref either.
This whole place is completely different than what I expected... Then again, what did I really expect?
I came to the place it all started and expected something different? No, that is just me trying to find a better mental image.
Sylvia expected everything we’ve seen so far... I should have too.
"I’m sorry for getting frustrated with you," Sylvia speaks up with a softer tone.
"It is okay. This can be frustrating here," I respond calmly.
She steps back to keep the pace with me.
"I just hate that we couldn’t help here sooner," Sylvia says while looking around.
"We’re here now at least," I reply with a serious tone.
"That we are,"
"Let’s do what we can while we are here then,"
Step. Step. Step.
In the distance I can see something that doesn’t just look like a broken down building, it kind of looks like a fort. This could potentially be Fort Mythos.
The place we are heading for.
As we continue forward I can see torches slowly starting to appear. They are burning bright around the walls of the fort.
"Is that really the fort we’re looking for?" I ask curiously.
"It definitely is," Sylvia answers with a bit of relief in her voice.
Sylvia sheathes her sword and I quickly do the same after.
I’m hoping the slayers here will be people that I can learn quite a bit from. I’d like to become a slayer worth mentioning.
~You really care about that now?
I care about killing dragons but a name for myself wouldn’t be so bad. Mostly because I’ll be able to travel to places without a problem.
I’m just not trying to deal with issues like we had over in Aerithel.
Having a reputation can fix that as I’ve seen; after everything in Driften... It got better.
~That much is true.
Exactly. That is even more of a reason why it would be good to build a reputation.
