Slime True Immortal

Chapter 415: Fate Is Not Mysterious

Ouros spoke the truth.

"Back then, Alex was on good terms with us silver dragons. He married Amelia, Olivia's great-great-grandmother, making it one of the rare marriages between dragons and humans, personally blessed by the Father God himself."

"To elevate him into one of the few deities within the human pantheon, we paid an enormous price. Amelia sacrificed her own dragon soul to empower him, the Father God personally guaranteed his World Tree authority, and the entire silver dragon clan shielded him from countless enemy attacks throughout the campaign."

"But in the end, he betrayed us."

"The Father God has always harbored resentment over what happened back then. It was from that point onward that He began shifting more of His favor toward the other metallic dragons, who gradually replaced the silver dragons' standing in the Dragon Nest over this past millennium."

Chen Yu shrank his body guiltily, muttering under his breath, "So when your Father God sees me, He's not going to just slap me into slime paste, is He?"

Ouros shook his head.

"It's all in the past now. Besides, over these ten years, we've gradually come to see the truth of what happened back then. We're no longer as furious as we were at the beginning."

"Otherwise, I never would have sent Olivia to the castle he left behind with only half-hearted conviction. If this were a thousand years ago, I'd have torn that castle down myself."

But he wanted to say that this old dragon wasn't nearly as magnanimous as he made himself out to be.

If he were truly that open-minded, he wouldn't have flown into a rage the moment he saw Olivia's corpse without even asking a single question, nearly burying Winterhold under snow, and then fought him for an entire day and night.

Still, Chen Yu held back those words. He was afraid that if he said them, the old dragon's pride would be wounded, and he'd drag him into a second round.

It wasn't that he was afraid of fighting; it was mainly that fighting was too exhausting.

Fortunately, Ouros didn't notice the little thoughts running through his mind.

His gaze fell upon the battlefield outside the castle, as if looking into the distant horizon, or perhaps reminiscing about some moment long ago.

"I've lived for over fifteen hundred years. I've seen the last sunset of the Giant Kingdom, witnessed the undead scourge ravaging the northern tundra, and watched humanity rise step by step from tribes that couldn't even preserve their own flames to where they are today."

"But what I remember most vividly in my entire life is still that Astral battle, the one that almost changed all of Zeyarila."

"Many deities participated in that battle. It was a rare occurrence in any era."

"The Giant pantheon was primarily represented by the Savage Giant Beorne, the Earth and Conquest God Torrek, and the Frost God Hrungnir as the main contenders."

"They sought to seize the World Tree's authority, using it to establish the giants' absolute dominion over the continent."

"Savage Giant Beorne—that name is probably barely remembered by any humans now. But a thousand years ago, merely uttering his name was enough to make people fall to their knees in terror."

"Beorne is the only ancient deity in the Giant pantheon who began accumulating believers from the primordial era onward, rising to power just as the Shadow Dragon had fallen."

"His followers believe he was born from the fissure that opened when the first mountain range rose from the depths of the earth, the most primal incarnation of violence between heaven and earth. As long as giants who wage war on the land still believe in Beorne, his power will never run dry."

"Earth and Conquest God Torrek was the war deity of the Giant pantheon. Countless conquest campaigns across the continent were initiated by His followers. During their most glorious period, the Giant Kingdom had conquered nearly everything within reach, save for crossing the Shadow Mountains."

"Frost Hrungnir was the most ostentatious of the three, the deity of the northern frost giants, often involving Himself in internal factional struggles among the giants."

"He could freeze the northern end of the continent into a frozen tundra, and also grant the giants the ability to migrate across the sea during the polar night. He was equally formidable."

"When those three Giant deities stood together, it meant that the entire civilization of the giants was bound to their war chariot."

"What made things even more troublesome were the deities they had recruited."

"The Savage Subordinate God of the Orc pantheon, Glak—by any reasonable standard, that guy was a complete evil deity. As long as something didn't benefit the survival of orcs, they couldn't fight alongside demons, nor could they make peace with humans."

"But that was precisely what made him most dangerous. He was too pure—so pure that all factional judgments had to give way to the continuation of the orc race."

"The giants promised the orcs that half of the northern tundra would be designated as permanent orc territory. For that promise, Glak never retreated a single step throughout the entire war."

"Then there was the Death pantheon's Mordewyn the Skeletal, the sole protector of all undead in Zeyarila, and the source of the undead scourge."

"Mordewyn was not a natural ally of the giants. But the Death pantheon was not well-regarded in Zeyarila. If the gods were to redraw the map of faith, as the lowest-ranking deity in the Death pantheon, he would have been the first to be purged."

"So he proactively sided with the Giant camp, hoping to leverage the power of the Giant pantheon to retain his authority over the domain of death after the war."

"He had unleashed several large-scale undead scourges across the continent, sometimes turning nearly the entire north into a land of absolute death. Even the giants found these undead troublesome."

"As for Plague Grolush..." When Ouros reached this point, a note of obvious disgust crept into his voice.

"He is the true god worshiped by goblins, and the most revolting of the Giant camp."

"Grolush's divine domains are plague, decay, and slow death. He never fights directly in battle; he only causes enemies to contract incurable diseases, letting them slowly rot away in agony."

Chen Yu wobbled his gel in agreement. Those plague spells cast by the goblin shamans were indeed disgusting.

Besides, the very first fragment of World Tree authority he had obtained did come from those goblin shamans who believed in Plague Grolush.

He had guessed that Giant deities were involved in this war, but he never expected that even orc deities and undead deities had participated.

Ouros continued: "On Alex's side, the forces standing with him were no less formidable than the giants."

"Our Dragon Father God, Phoenix, personally joined the battle, and the Life Dragon Vitalus and Magic God Magis also joined the war."

"The Father God Phoenix is the supreme deity of our dragon race. There is no definitive record among dragons as to what His true form actually is. Some dragons say He is a massive silhouette coiled deep within the Astral Realm, while others claim He has long since merged His physical body with the original Dragon Nest itself."

"The Life Dragon Vitalus represents the dragons' exuberant vitality and their savage, brawling spirit. He is the deity most adept at combat."

"The Magic God Magis, on the other hand, is more like a scholarly dragon researching magic. The earliest Astral spells were born from the hands of His followers."

"Beyond them, the Sacred Oak of the Elf pantheon and the Goddess of Life, Elwen, were the dragons' earliest allies. Later, the Coiler Yesara and the Swamp Spirit Putu of the Nature pantheon also stood on our side."

Putu?

Was that the deity worshiped by the lizardfolk shamans?

Chen Yu recalled how, back then, Sekashi had mistaken him for Putu's envoy.

As for the Coiler Yesara, she also seemed to be an ancient deity worshiped by the lizardfolk.

Ouros explained: "The Sacred Oak Goddess and the Goddess of Life Elwen of the Elf pantheon—their relationship is like that of mother and daughter."

"The Sacred Oak itself is the one and only sacred tree of elven faith, while Elwen is the personified soul bestowed upon the Sacred Oak's will through its long, natural evolution. She represents the power of life and nature. It was under her call that the deities of the Nature pantheon joined the war."

"The Coiler Yesara of the Nature pantheon controls life and black scales. She has considerable ties with us dragons and is also close to the deities of the Elf pantheon."

"Her subordinate deity, the Swamp Spirit Putu, seems to have some connection with you slimes. His mythical form is a shapeless mass of swamp mud. He can be considered the master of all swamps on land, and naturally, he also protects the slimes that inhabit them."

"As for the Human pantheon, they initially maintained a wait-and-see attitude during this battle."

"The Human pantheon's Sun Ignis, Corruption Morgul, and Magic Goddess Magia all watched from the sidelines."

"Furthermore, there were some mysterious deities secretly observing from the shadows, such as several deities from the Ocean pantheon, as well as the Lady of Contrariety and Chaos Chaos."

"The Sun Ignis was initially leaning toward joining the battle. After all, the relationship between humans and giants was far from good—it could even be described as mortal enemies."

"But unfortunately, the Human pantheon had a chaotic deity called Corruption Morgul, who took advantage of the chaos to spread his faith, which once incurred the Father God's displeasure."

"To make matters worse, Ignis's divine essence was in decline at the time, lacking enough divine power to sustain a divine war. So they chose to observe."

So it was quite a gathering. Almost every deity Chen Yu had ever heard of had been involved.

No wonder the old man said the other Dragon Gods weren't friendly with him.

No wonder that Astral battle had been so spectacular.

No wonder Ouros didn't dare to mention this battle in the Material Plane. There were far too many deities involved. Mentioning just one could attract their attention.

"What happened later? What was the outcome?" Chen Yu listened with great interest, shifting his gel body on the cushion.

Ouros said: "You can probably guess the ending. The Father God emerged victorious in the decisive battle against the Savage Giant Beorne, and we won the war."

"All three deities of the Giant pantheon fell into deep slumber. The Giant Dynasty never recovered, unable to rise again."

"After his defeat, Mordewyn the Skeletal also fell into deep slumber. From then on, the undead lost their divine protection and could only take refuge in the Abyss, living alongside demons, barely scraping by."

"The Savage Subordinate God Glak was downgraded from a full deity to a demigod, and has been wandering the Astral Realm ever since. Plague Grolush's authority was shattered, but he still has residual influence among goblin tribes. There are now faint signs of his revival."

"But this was actually a compromised outcome, not a true victory."

"Why do you say that?" Chen Yu tilted his head.

Ouros sighed. "The war was not as smooth as you imagine."

"In reality, even with Alex's World Tree authority assisting us from the start, we could barely contend with the Giant pantheon, and we were even somewhat suppressed by the Giant deities."

"The giants' power was too vast. Their foundation of faith on the land ran too deep. Every time a Giant deity suffered a severe blow, they could quickly recover from their followers' prayers. This is something no other pantheon can match."

"But none of this was the most fatal. The most fatal thing was Alex's departure."

"Before he left, he entrusted the World Tree in a Bottle to the Father God, claiming he needed to return to his homeland to acquire new power. He repeatedly promised the Father God that he would definitely come back."

"Yet it was this very return from which there was never any word again."

"I also participated in this war at the time and heard some rumors. Some dragons said that Alex had betrayed us, abandoned his wife, abandoned his allies, and fled alone back to his homeland that no one could find."

"At that time, the followers of all the deities were denouncing his betrayal. We silver dragons became the biggest joke, having exhausted the trust and strength of our entire race for a single human, only to be abandoned when we needed him most."

"What happened afterward, you can probably guess some of it."

Ouros lifted his eyes again. "We compromised with the Human pantheon, ceding control of the continent. We compromised with the Ocean pantheon, ceding control of the seas. We made a solemn promise to the Lady of Contrariety that dragons would no longer actively weave the fate of any living being."

"These conditions bought us the help of the Human pantheon. But we still paid a terrible price."

"The Coiler Yesara and the Swamp Spirit Putu of the Nature pantheon exhausted their divine power and both fell into deep slumber, with no signs of revival to this day."

"The Human pantheon's Sun God Ignis directly suffered the annihilation of His divine law, His divine kingdom crashing down into the Material Plane. The Magic Goddess Magia also fell into deep slumber. From that point on, no new Legendary Mage in Zeyarila has been able to obtain divine revelation by praying to her."

"And of our dragons, only the Father God Phoenix remains awake."

"But even after we had paid every price we could, the World Tree in a Bottle was still shattered during this battle."

"The illusory Creator authority, the moment it touched reality, dissolved into nothingness, leaving behind only fragments of authority scattered across Zeyerra."

"That legendary 'Creator God' never truly opened His eyes before returning to nothingness."

"In the end, we honored our promise to the other gods, ceding the future of Zeyarila to humanity. The deities of the other pantheons also withdrew to the Astral Realm and their own secret divine kingdoms. From then on, human kingdoms began to thrive and expand across the continent."

After hearing all this, Chen Yu finally understood what Viola meant when she said, "Fate is not mysterious."

No wonder human kingdoms had risen from being the giant's vassal race to the dominant civilization across the entire continent in just a thousand years.

None of this was accidental.

All of fate, all of this ebb and flow, had been woven a thousand years ago.

Without the dragons' tacit consent and retreat, without that compromise bought with divine blood and sacrifice among the gods, humanity might still be nothing more than the giants' servants to this day.

Of course, that's not to say that under fate, humanity's own efforts—overthrowing giant rule, building prosperous kingdoms, studying magic, and all their struggles—were unimportant.

In fact, it was precisely because of humanity's resistance and their wild, fierce faith that the human pantheon was born a thousand years ago.

The victory of the human pantheon was the fruit of humanity's resistance.

He snapped back to reality and found Ouros staring at him.

His aged voice grew heavy. "Over these years, we silver dragons have been searching for the truth, trying to figure out where Alex actually went and what caused his disappearance."

"But ever since he vanished, all the gods have, by unspoken agreement, stopped mentioning that name. They've even been deliberately erasing all traces of his existence, bit by bit, as if the world itself is trying to forget him."

"Sir, if you know the answer, I hope you can give us an explanation—not to the gods, but only to those dragons who died because they believed in him."

Chen Yu met Ouros's gaze. He felt that if he answered incorrectly, something bad would happen.

Could it be that some deity was secretly watching? he muttered inwardly.

But he did actually know why the Cloud Cliff Dao Master had suddenly disappeared, and it wasn't because of betrayal.

This time, he finally didn't have to answer with guilt. He even puffed out his chest with a hint of righteous confidence.

Chen Yu raised his little gel hand. "You've seen that power of mine that can assimilate the earth into gel. In my homeland, cultivators call this power the Dao."

Ouros nodded. He couldn't deny that. Even his Greater Disjunction couldn't eliminate that planar magic; it could only be a forbidden power from that world.

"The Dao requires closeness to the nature of heaven and earth, the laws of all things, to be comprehended. Once one reaches the end of the Dao, they shatter the void and ascend to become immortals—not much different from becoming a deity."

"But no one has ever known what lies beyond ascension, because after ascending, no one has ever returned."

"Alex did indeed return to his homeland back then. He achieved Unity with the Dao and ascended, disappearing from everyone's sight."

"Perhaps he initially intended to return to the battlefield after ascending, but after his ascension, just like all those before him, he never appeared again."

Although Ouros didn't quite understand what "shattering the void" was supposed to be difficult, nor what an "immortal" was, his soul-piercing eyes could tell that Chen Yu was not lying.

Alex's disappearance had indeed been an accident.
