An Lizheng frowned and said, "I’m afraid this is going to blow up. The police are involved now. This won’t be so easy to smooth over."
As he spoke, An Lizheng looked at An Likang in frustration. "Look at the people you hired! Couldn’t they find a more secluded place to do it? Or find another way to handle things? They did it in broad daylight! Not only that, but they were sloppy and left a trail, and they didn’t even get the job done. If the mainland police really track this back to us, how are we going to clean up this mess?"
An Likang said dismissively, "Hah! Do the mainland police even have what it takes? Besides, this is Xiangcheng, not the mainland. This isn’t their turf. So what if they do track it here? You think our An Family can’t handle them?"
"You fool." An Lizheng was so angry his temples throbbed. "Do you think I’m scared of the mainland police? Think about it! If the mainland police really investigate, do you think Old Mrs. An won’t find out? If she realizes we were the ones who went after that little bastard, what do you think she’ll do?"
Hearing An Lizheng’s words, An Likang couldn’t help but frown. ’How could I have forgotten about that?’ If Old Mrs. An found out, things would get really troublesome. She already held a grudge against the two brothers because of that incident a few years ago. Although the Old Master was on their side, he was in a vegetative state now, so that was no help. If Old Mrs. An made some decision in a fit of rage, it would definitely be bad for them.
"Then what do we do?" An Likang scratched his head in frustration and fumed, "That Old Mrs. An... Third Brother and his wife have been dead for years. We two brothers have been serving her dutifully, but we still can’t compare to a paralyzed cripple? She’s actually willing to spend ten million on medicine for that cripple. Hmph. Talk about blatant favoritism. Is she curing that cripple just so he can come back and fight us for the family fortune?"
"How should I know what to do?" An Lizheng said angrily.
"Big Brother, you have to come up with a plan," An Likang said, growing agitated. "It’s a shame the Master isn’t in Xiangcheng. If he were here, we wouldn’t have had so much trouble this time. Back then, with Third Brother’s matter..."
"Likang, some things are better left in the past," An Lizheng said, glaring at him.
An Likang realized he’d said too much and changed the subject. "So, Big Brother, what do you think we should do? If the police really investigate and Old Mrs. An finds out, what then?"
"Hmph!" An Lizheng shot a look at his foolish younger brother, then turned to An Zhiqian, who had been sitting silently to the side. "Zhiqian, what are your thoughts on this?"
Just as An Zhiqian was about to speak after hearing his father’s question, there was a knock on the study door.
"Come in," An Lizheng called out.
"Master, Second Master, Young Master." The person who entered was one of An Zhiqian’s men. "It seems Old Mrs. An has gone to the mainland."
"What!" The news startled all three of them. An Likang fumed, "So Old Mrs. An was pulling a fast one on us! She said she was going to spend a few days with the Old Master, but she went to the mainland instead. How can we, the ones by her side, still mean less to her than that little bastard?"
"You may leave," An Zhiqian said to the man.
"Yes, Young Master."
After the man left the study, An Zhiqian said, "Dad, Second Uncle, Old Mrs. An is definitely going to Beijing on this trip to the mainland. Once she meets with An Zhihan, I’m afraid our involvement won’t stay secret, even if the mainland police don’t track it back to us."
"Are you saying that kid, An Zhihan, has already figured us out?" An Likang said, narrowing his eyes.
"It’s very likely." A shadow passed over An Zhiqian’s eyes.
He had never taken An Zhihan seriously. ’An orphan, a cripple, living far away on the mainland...’ He hadn’t returned to Xiangcheng in years and had no foundation here. He posed no threat whatsoever. For all these years, An Zhiqian had simply pretended this cousin didn’t exist.
But now, Old Mrs. An was actually spending money to get An Zhihan treatment, treatment that might very well cure him. This made An Zhiqian feel threatened. After all, if Old Mrs. An was willing to spend ten million on An Zhihan’s treatment, it proved that she had never given up on him in her heart.
’No wonder she’s kept such a tight grip on the An Family’s assets all these years and refused to let go,’ he thought. ’And all that talk about donating everything to charity if there’s no will... Hmph. She was probably just saving it all for An Zhihan.’
Moreover, the one helping An Zhihan find the medicine was Su Qing. The fact that Su Qing could help Cheng Beilin escape from that place was proof enough that she had some real skills. Otherwise, the Cheng Family wouldn’t treat Su Qing as a guest of honor, welcoming her so warmly every time she came to Xiangcheng.
If this Su Qing were to help An Zhihan seize the An Family’s assets in the future, she would undoubtedly be a potential threat.
For An Zhiqian, that was no different from a death sentence.
At the same time, An Zhiqian felt a sense of relief. He was glad that after seeing Su Qing at the An Family’s old residence, he’d had someone investigate the purpose of her visit. Otherwise, Old Mrs. An and An Zhihan might have kept them in the dark indefinitely.
"So what do we do?!" An Likang exclaimed in frustration, standing up and pacing back and forth in the study. "If Old Mrs. An finds out, this will be a huge mess."
An Likang’s pacing was making An Lizheng dizzy. He grunted, "Sit down. You’re walking in circles. Even if you’re not getting dizzy, I am."
An Likang pouted and plopped back down into his seat. "Big Brother, you have to come up with a plan."
An Likang then looked at An Zhiqian. "Zhiqian, the future of our An Family rests on you. You have to think of something."
In An Zhiqian’s generation of the An Family, there were three boys and two girls. The girls were An Zhiwei and An Likang’s daughter, An Zhiyun. Besides An Zhiqian and An Zhihan, the other boy was An Likang’s younger son, An Zhiheng, who was only eight years old.
An Likang originally had an older son, a year younger than An Zhiqian, but he was killed in a shooting incident while vacationing abroad a few years ago. Therefore, the hopes of the An Family’s third generation currently rested on An Zhiqian.
An Zhiqian narrowed his eyes. "Dad, Second Uncle, we can’t leave those three as loose ends. Tell them to return to Xiangcheng immediately."
An Lizheng nodded upon hearing this. "Indeed. We certainly can’t keep those three around."
"Exactly." An Likang’s eyes lit up. "The dead tell no tales. Even if Old Mrs. An finds out, as long as there’s no evidence and we don’t admit to anything, she can’t do a thing to us."
An Lizheng shot An Likang a look. "You’d better drink less these days. You can’t control your mouth when you drink. If you hadn’t gotten drunk and run your mouth back then, Old Mrs. An and the Old Master would never have known we were involved in that incident."
