Something’s Wrong with This Game — I Became a God by Mining!
Chapter 160: I Count to Ten"Elder Mian, there are so many branches here. What basis does Chief Constable Yang have for saying this path leads out?"
A Seventh-Rank Mining Guild member frowned.
He was a bit younger, though still not as young as Yang Ling and the others.
Around thirty-seven or thirty-eight years old.
Mian Zhengdong thought for a moment, "I don't know either, but if we don't move now, staying here is just waiting for death. I think following Chief Constable Yang should be safer. His strength ranks among the top of the upper Seventh-Rank. Perhaps this Water Qilin Cave trip will push him into the Sixth Rank soon!"
After speaking, he stepped into that branching path and hurried after Yang Ling.
The other Seventh-Rank members exchanged glances. There was no other choice, so they followed.
...
Inside an ice cavern, more than twenty Arhat Temple disciples sat cross-legged, reciting sutras.
Surrounding them stood dozens of cold-eyed experts, each holding a finely crafted hand crossbow.
Their quality was no worse than the crossbow Yun Ruo had given Yang Ling.
Those crossbows were aimed at the Arhat Temple disciples; with a single order they would all fire.
"Venerable monks, you practice Buddhism and know killing is wrong. I've been influenced by you, too. I prefer not to kill if I don't have to."
A jaunty young man strolled through the crowd, smiling half-heartedly as he looked at Huikong and the others.
"The Commander sent us with sincere intentions. If you monks are willing to join our Heavenly Wolf Guard, we will supply all the provisions you need for your cultivation."
The Arhat Temple disciples continued their recitations with eyes closed, though some faces had gone pale and their pupils darted under their lids; clearly, their minds weren't at peace.
Huikong suddenly opened his eyes and looked calmly at the man before him.
"The actions of your Heavenly Wolf Guard today are outrageous. There will be karmic retribution."
"Huikong, do you know who I am?"
The youth suddenly asked with a smile.
Huikong shook his head, "We've never met."
"See? You don't even know who we are. Where is this karmic retribution then?"
The youth laughed.
The nearby crossbow-wielding experts also showed faint smiles.
"Our Commander is a prodigy. Every step has been thoroughly planned. Over the years, the number of Rong tribe experts planted in Zhao State is countless," the youth said with a smile. "Too bad Zhao State has no one who can match our Commander. Even the Department Head of the Ironclad Department can only catch petty thieves and inconsequential spies."
He paused, "Let's get acquainted. After all, we're all prodigies of the same generation. I'm Tong Jiu of the Heavenly Wolf Guard."
"With me today are Tong Wu and Tong Si."
"Don't underestimate the 'Tong' surname. Gold, Silver, Copper — those who can use these as surnames are favored by our Commander."
Tong Jiu glanced at the surrounding experts, "They are all Seventh-Rank as well, and not very old. The oldest is only thirty-seven. That's considered precocious in your Zhao State. With effort they might reach the Sixth Rank someday, but they still won't touch Gold or Silver or Copper."
Huikong frowned, "Why are you telling me this?"
"Don't you understand?" Tong Jiu smiled. "There is a Silver Three in your Arhat Temple, and a Gold Six."
At those words, the sutra recitation immediately stopped.
All the disciples looked at Tong Jiu in shock.
By his statement, at least two Heavenly Wolf Guard spies had infiltrated Arhat Temple, and their ranks and positions far exceeded the one before them.
"That can't be. There are absolutely no spies of yours in Arhat Temple." Huikong said coldly.
"What's impossible? They, like you, fell into a desperate situation and had no choice but to join the Heavenly Wolf Guard. Over the years they've discovered the benefits of joining," Tong Jiu said with a half-smile. "Take Silver Three, for example. When he was young he wasn't even allowed to touch Second-Rate internal skill. It was only with the Guard's support that he climbed the ranks in Arhat Temple."
"You understand what I'm telling you?" Tong Jiu continued. "First, now that you know this secret, if you refuse to join the Heavenly Wolf Guard you have only one way out—death. I won't let you leave alive. So don't hope for any lucky break. Second, I'm reminding you that with your talents you have a chance to earn the surnames Gold, Silver, or Copper in the future, to become core strength of the Heavenly Wolf Guard. The Commander will not treat you unfairly."
...
The atmosphere became subtly tense.
Li Shou swore quietly; this trip had turned out terribly unlucky. Not only did he get nothing, he ran into this mess.
"Maybe I should become a traitor—no, I'm a player, not a traitor. If I infiltrate the Heavenly Wolf Guard, I can secretly pass information to Brother Yang and the others."
Li Shou's eyes lit up as he pictured undercover plots like those in crime films. His blood boiled.
He quickly opened the Divine Realm Level Ranking and glanced.
"Brother Yang is level 45 now. I remember he was only 37 when he came in. Huh... I should've followed Brother Yang. Even if punished by the temple, so what?"
Li Shou regretted it inwardly.
"I'll count to ten. Think about it. Those willing to join the Heavenly Wolf Guard, stand up."
Tong Jiu began to count with a playful smile.
"One."
He scanned the Arhat Temple disciples.
"Two."
At this point, the disciples remained fairly calm, all watching Huikong. Huikong's face was ashen.
"Three."
"Four."
"Five."
"Six."
As the numbers drew closer to ten, several Arhat Temple disciples began to fidget. They could see the hidden experts preparing to pull their triggers. Crossbow bolts could fall at any moment.
"Seven, eight, nine..." Tong Jiu's mouth curved slightly.
"Ten!"
At that moment three bald-headed disciples suddenly stood. Their expressions were humiliated, their eyes flickering, unable to look at Huikong and the others. Tong Jiu's mouth curled into a small smile.
At the same time, a cold glint suddenly shot through the air. No one had time to react; they only heard the whistling sound. A throwing dagger flew and sank cleanly into the back of Tong Jiu's skull.
Tong Jiu's smile froze. He instinctively reached back to feel the wound, then his body froze into an ice sculpture.
Yang Ling burst out from a narrow passage, holding the Jiaogu Saber in one hand and the Centenary Refined Vermilion Gold Pickaxe in the other. He unleashed maximum speed and crashed into the crowd.
The Rong tribe spies were still reeling from Tong Jiu's collapse when, in the blink of an eye, several of them were cut down!
Li Shou gaped, finally recognizing the attacker. He shouted excitedly, "It's Chief Constable Yang! Kill them!!!"
His shout rallied the nearby Arhat Temple disciples, who immediately chose to fight.
Huikong rose and plunged into the fray without a second thought.
Li Shou quickly found a safe spot to observe the battle. He was only an Eighth-Rank; he couldn't interfere with a clash between Seventh-Rank experts.
The three Arhat Temple disciples who had stood up earlier snapped out of their stunned moments and, cheeks flushed, charged at the Rong tribe spies.
