Hearing Agatha’s answer, Evenson quietly let out a breath.
At least you had the decency not to throw me completely under the bus.
"Warlock," Agatha said, meeting his gaze with complete sincerity, "my ladies were freed because of you. I owe you a great debt, and I intend to repay it."
"You absolutely do," Evenson replied a little too quickly.
His tone drew curious looks from both Eredar twins.
He cleared his throat.
"I mean... we made a fair bargain. I’ve fulfilled my end. Now it’s your turn to fulfill yours."
"You have my word." Agatha nodded. "I won’t disappoint you."
"I hope not."
Evenson didn’t dare push the matter any further. If Agatha changed her mind and decided to expose everything she’d manipulated him into doing, his carefully balanced situation would collapse instantly.
The exchange didn’t escape the twins’ notice.
Saltheril and Altheressa exchanged a knowing glance but chose not to comment.
"My ladies," Agatha said after a moment, "maintaining this projection from the Twisting Nether is taxing. It may also attract... unwanted attention."
There was something deliberate beneath her words.
"We understand," Altheressa replied.
"You’ve confirmed that this warlock can be trusted," Saltheril added. "You may return."
The dismissal seemed almost cold.
Agatha had spent who knew how many years engineering their escape, yet after finally reuniting, she was simply sent away.
Apparently, this was normal for them.
She showed no disappointment whatsoever.
"Then I shall take my leave. If you require anything, summon me."
Just as her projection began to fade, Evenson raised a hand.
"Hold on."
Everyone looked at him.
"You haven’t seen each other in over ten thousand years, have you?"
He pointed toward the twins.
"You’re really not taking them back with you?"
The more he listened, the clearer it became.
Agatha had absolutely no intention of bringing them home.
She was leaving them...
On Earth.
That was a terrible idea.
Altheressa narrowed her eyes.
"You seem awfully eager to see us leave, warlock."
"Not at all," Evenson replied immediately.
"I simply thought someone of your stature would be more comfortable returning to the Nether, where loyal servants could attend to your every need."
Before either twin could answer, Agatha shook her head.
"You’ve been to Fissure of Woe."
"You know it isn’t exactly a pleasant place."
She looked up at the unfamiliar night sky.
"Compared to endless war in the Nether... this world feels almost peaceful."
"I agree," Saltheril said with a satisfied smile.
"We’ve spent millennia surrounded by the same battlefields."
"A change of scenery sounds refreshing."
Altheressa smirked.
"Besides..."
"You summoned us."
She tilted her head.
"Surely you’re not planning to abandon your own summons?"
Abandon them?
You’ve got to be kidding.
I was tricked into summoning you in the first place.
If I’d known whose ritual catalysts those were, I never would have touched them.
Before he could think of a reply, Agatha’s projection vanished entirely.
Evenson stared at the empty air.
Seriously?
Are those your mistresses... or your creditors?
You disappeared faster than someone avoiding debt collectors.
That settled it.
He couldn’t beat the twins.
He couldn’t force them to leave.
And now Agatha had escaped, leaving him to deal with the consequences.
He had no choice except to keep them under his watch.
If he simply ignored them, he might wake up one morning to discover they’d already built a Dark Portal in someone’s backyard.
For a while, silence settled over the clearing.
Without Agatha acting as a bridge, none of them had much to talk about.
Eventually, the impatient Altheressa broke the silence.
"You’re the only warlock in this world, correct?"
"So far as I know."
"You’ve never considered taking apprentices?"
She looked genuinely curious.
"Building something like the Shadow Council?"
"Not at the moment."
Evenson answered honestly.
"People with the aptitude for magic are exceptionally rare here."
There was no point hiding it.
If the twins intended to remain on Earth, they’d figure that out soon enough.
"Perhaps that’s for the best," Saltheril said.
Evenson blinked.
He hadn’t expected that answer.
Seeing his expression, she smiled knowingly.
"If there are too many warlocks, we’d have to share the credit."
"And the Legion’s rewards."
Credit?
Rewards?
Since when did I earn either of those?
Before he could ask, Altheressa got straight to the point.
"So."
"When do you intend to present this world to the Burning Legion?"
The question nearly made Evenson choke.
Then it all clicked.
That’s what they meant.
They expect me to become another Gul’dan.
A guide.
A traitor who opens the front door.
Absolutely not.
"It’s too early," he answered evenly.
"Do you still feel attached to this world?" Saltheril asked.
"Worlds consumed by the Legion rarely leave anything behind. Sentiment isn’t uncommon."
Evenson smiled faintly.
"When Gul’dan handed Draenor over to the Legion for power..."
"Do you think he hesitated because he loved his world?"
Neither twin answered.
"Then why delay?" Altheressa asked.
"The timing."
Evenson folded his arms.
"The Legion’s attention is completely fixed on Azeroth."
"The campaign there is consuming every major commander they have."
"If I report this world now, it may not interest anyone important."
"It would be wiser to wait until the war in Azeroth reaches its conclusion."
The twins considered his reasoning.
After a moment, they both nodded.
It made perfect sense.
Compared to Azeroth, an unknown backwater world simply wasn’t a priority.
Trying to report it now might not even reach the Legion’s upper command.
"Oh, right."
Evenson suddenly remembered something.
"The reason you’re staying..."
He looked between them.
"...isn’t because you intend to claim part of the credit, is it?"
The sisters merely exchanged identical, amused smiles.
Neither denied it.
So that’s a yes.
Evenson sighed.
"I’ve spent years laying the groundwork here."
"It seems a little unfair for you to arrive at the last minute and split the reward."
Saltheril nodded without embarrassment.
"It is unfair."
Altheressa finished the thought.
"But we’re doing it anyway."
She smiled sweetly.
"What exactly are you going to do about it?"
Evenson spread his hands in surrender.
"What can I do?"
"You two are stronger than I am."
Then his expression hardened.
"That said..."
"I do have one condition."
"I’m not completely powerless."
"I have ways of protecting my interests."
The twins exchanged another glance.
Three Artifact Weapons.
Even they couldn’t ignore those.
"Very well," Saltheril said.
"State your condition."
Evenson looked directly at both sisters.
"We’re going to sign a contract."
