The Ghost Rider had a problem.
He was turning green.
The Fel Flame itself hadn’t been particularly damaging. The desert rock it touched had melted into glowing slag, but the Rider’s Hellfire made him naturally resistant to ordinary flames.
The real threat wasn’t the fire.
It was the emerald energy hidden inside it.
The moment those green flames touched me... that power invaded my body.
He looked down.
Large sections of his Hellfire had taken on an unnatural emerald tint.
The corrupting energy refused to be suppressed.
It couldn’t be extinguished.
It couldn’t be purified.
Instead, it intertwined with his own power, stealing control of every place it spread.
Entire portions of his body no longer obeyed him.
Had it not been for Hellfire’s overwhelming rejection of foreign energies, the carefully refined Fel corruption might already have transformed him into something else entirely.
A Fel Rider...
The thought alone was intolerable.
I have to deal with this now.
The green corruption continued spreading.
At this rate, he’d soon lose control of his entire body.
With a roar, the Ghost Rider slammed one hand into the ground.
Hellfire erupted outward in every direction.
When the flames subsided, he leaped clear of the burning circle.
Large portions of the fire coating his skeleton had disappeared completely, leaving only blackened bones smoking in the air.
The remaining Hellfire, however, burned with pure orange intensity.
Not a trace of Fel remained within it.
Like sparks igniting dry timber, the purified Hellfire spread rapidly across his body until the Rider stood fully restored.
Evenson narrowed his eyes.
"So..."
"You cut away every section that had been contaminated."
"A drastic solution."
"But I imagine it wasn’t cheap."
He smiled coldly.
"You can amputate one infected limb."
"What happens when I infect your entire body?"
Between his outstretched palms, an emerald sphere slowly condensed.
Fel energy compressed until it looked almost liquid.
The Ghost Rider’s flames flickered violently.
If translated into human body language...
He had just bristled.
That tiny sphere contained far more concentrated power than the previous attack.
Getting hit by that would not end well.
A shrill whistle echoed across the desert.
The infernal motorcycle roared to life on its own and sped toward its master.
The Ghost Rider vaulted onto the saddle in one smooth motion.
He intended to kill Evenson before the spell finished charging.
Evenson’s eyebrows shot upward.
"Seriously?"
"You’re fighting on horseback now?"
Then he grinned.
"Too late."
He thrust both hands forward.
"Chaos Bolt... Point-Blank Annihilation!"
His battle against the Abomination had taught him something.
The original Chaos Bolt hit absurdly hard.
Hard enough to punch clean through the Abomination’s nearly indestructible body.
The problem...
It kept going.
Most of the spell’s energy had been wasted blasting into the sky beyond the target.
At the time, Evenson had watched the projectile disappear into the horizon with mixed emotions.
What if that thing hits an airplane?
More importantly...
That’s a ridiculous waste of mana.
The solution had come from an unlikely source.
Hollow-point ammunition.
Instead of maximizing penetration, he’d redesigned the spell to sacrifice piercing power in exchange for catastrophic internal destruction.
The instant the projectile touched its target, it would blossom into a spherical field roughly matching the victim’s size.
Inside that sphere, countless microscopic particles of Fel energy ricocheted chaotically in every direction.
Anything trapped within would be shredded into dust.
Against heavily armored enemies, the original Chaos Bolt remained superior.
Against the Ghost Rider...
This version was perfect.
One hit.
Full-body Fel contamination.
The Ghost Rider sensed the danger instinctively.
Yet he continued charging.
At the last possible instant...
He jumped.
Rider and motorcycle split apart.
The skeleton leaped right.
The motorcycle veered left.
The tiny gap between them was just wide enough.
The emerald sphere shot harmlessly through.
It struck the desert behind them.
For a heartbeat...
Nothing happened.
Then a perfectly smooth sphere roughly two meters across appeared.
It vanished almost instantly.
Leaving behind a flawless hemispherical crater.
Every grain of sand inside it had ceased to exist.
Reduced to microscopic dust.
Evenson barely noticed.
He had a much bigger problem.
The Ghost Rider and his motorcycle were now attacking independently.
One from each side.
"Oh, come on."
"You already get a flaming motorcycle."
"Now the motorcycle counts as a combat pet too?"
"That’s just unfair to Beast Master Hunters."
He glanced left.
Then right.
His spell had missed.
Now he was caught in a pincer attack.
"Tch."
"As if I’d let that happen."
He pointed directly at the incoming motorcycle.
"Banish."
The infernal machine froze in place.
Its burning frame instantly became translucent, glowing with a pale green shimmer.
Banish was a classic warlock spell.
It temporarily exiled demons and elemental creatures into a pocket dimension.
Unfortunately, it only worked on targets that weren’t overwhelmingly powerful.
Evenson had briefly considered using it on the Ghost Rider himself.
One look at the Rider’s strength had convinced him not to bother.
Success was unlikely.
The motorcycle, however...
That was another story.
"If I can’t banish a bike," Evenson muttered, "I should probably hand in my spellbook."
With the infernal mount temporarily removed from the battlefield, he turned back toward its master.
The Ghost Rider was almost upon him.
Evenson began gathering Fel energy once more.
He would only get...
One more chance.
