Dottie’s sudden gasp drew every eye in the room.

When she realized everyone was staring at her, she quickly recovered, flashing a sweet, apologetic smile as though embarrassed by her outburst.

Only her eyes betrayed her.

There was fear there.

Real fear.

"...She seems terrified of us."

Saloras noticed it immediately. She stepped forward, reaching out as if to gently stroke Dottie’s cheek.

Dottie instinctively recoiled.

The smile remained plastered on her face, but panic had replaced every trace of composure in her eyes.

"What are you so afraid of, little human?"

Fear of demons was hardly unusual.

The Eredar Twins weren’t grotesque monsters, however.

Quite the opposite.

They possessed an elegant, otherworldly beauty that bordered on hypnotic. Every movement carried effortless grace and dangerous allure. Their digitigrade legs and cloven hooves might unsettle some people, but they looked far more like impossibly beautiful beings from myth than nightmare.

Most people’s first reaction would have been awe.

Not terror.

Unless...

They understood exactly what they were looking at.

Or they could sense something hidden beneath the surface.

"I’m... sensitive to supernatural energy," Dottie admitted after a long pause.

Evenson folded his arms.

"I’ve heard about what happened to you."

He frowned, searching for the name.

"There was some insane woman who tortured you with a strange power."

"Whitney Frost."

Dottie swallowed hard.

The memory still haunted her.

"She used something called Zero Matter... to break me during interrogation."

"Right."

Evenson snapped his fingers.

"Thanks. I’d forgotten the name."

His expression shifted into thought.

"So that’s what you’re sensing again."

Dottie hadn’t reacted strongly to the Curse of Weakness he’d cast on her.

Nor had the fel ritual surrounding Peggy disturbed her very much.

But the instant the twins arrived...

Everything changed.

She wasn’t reacting to demons.

She was reacting to the power they carried.

Evenson’s gaze drifted between the sisters.

"So..."

"Which one frightens you more?"

The twins exchanged a glance before simultaneously stepping closer.

Instead of trying to intimidate her, both subtly adjusted their posture, almost posing as though determined to prove they weren’t frightening at all.

Neither of them enjoyed being called scary.

Dottie hesitated.

Then, almost against her own will, her eyes settled on Saloras.

"...Hmph."

Saloras clicked her tongue.

Answer received.

Aurecess couldn’t help smiling.

"So our fearsome Lady Saloras claims another victim."

"What’s so funny?" Saloras rolled her eyes. "We’re twins. We look exactly alike."

Evenson cleared his throat before the sisters could launch into another argument.

"I think we’ve got our answer."

"It isn’t complicated," Saloras said with a dismissive shrug.

"It’s Shadow."

"That Whitney woman must have gained access to some fragment of Shadow power."

"Nothing extraordinary."

Strictly speaking, warlocks built their craft upon three fundamental powers.

Fel.

Shadow.

And fire.

Of course, anyone with enough talent, endurance, and questionable judgment could branch out into other disciplines.

Picture charging a warlock expecting a spell duel, only to discover he’d cursed every muscle in your body before pulling out a sword the size of a door, spinning into a Whirlwind, and finishing with a Shadow Bolt.

Warlocks were nothing if not creatively unfair.

Still, those three powers formed the foundation.

Among the Eredar Twins, the distinction was obvious.

Aurecess possessed absolute mastery over infernal flame.

Saloras, meanwhile, wielded Shadow with effortless precision.

"Shadow..."

A tiny sphere of violet darkness condensed above Evenson’s fingertips.

He floated it toward Dottie.

She immediately flinched away.

"So where did this world’s Shadow magic come from?"

His amusement faded.

Warlock magic wasn’t ordinary sorcery.

Fel was dangerous enough.

Shadow was worse.

Because of where it originated.

"The Void..."

Cold sweat prickled along Evenson’s back.

If someone on Earth had truly connected with the Void itself...

That was catastrophic.

The beings lurking beyond reality weren’t demons.

They were entities of endless hunger.

Old Gods.

Void Lords.

Existences that turned sanity into a temporary condition.

"It isn’t the Void."

Saloras answered with absolute certainty.

"If it were, she’d be dead."

She spoke with the confidence of someone who had spent millennia mastering Shadow.

"No mortal can truly gaze into the Void."

"Even a fleeting glimpse is enough to shatter the mind."

She looked at Dottie.

"If the power that scarred her had come directly from the Void..."

"...she would never have survived."

Evenson frowned.

"So..."

"If it isn’t firsthand Void Shadow..."

"...then it’s secondhand Shadow?"

Saloras snorted.

"We’re the ones using secondhand Shadow."

She crossed her arms.

"Whatever touched her is several steps further removed."

Shadow flowed endlessly from the Void, spreading across countless worlds before being diluted again and again.

If Earth had encountered a derivative source...

There was only one likely origin.

"Hell."

Evenson let out a long breath.

That was... manageable.

Compared to the Void, Hell was practically friendly.

The Seven Lords of Hell were terrifying.

But they’d take scheming devils over cosmic horrors that consumed entire realities any day.

"Boss."

Sarah’s voice echoed from the ritual chamber.

"We’re ready."

"Coming."

Evenson answered without looking away from Dottie.

Then he turned back toward her.

"My real work is about to begin."

"So."

"Have you made your decision?"

"Will you work for me?"

Dottie looked from Evenson to the Eredar Twins and back again.

There was no real choice.

Saloras’s power filled her with instinctive dread.

And she couldn’t abandon Peggy Carter.

"...Yes."

"I’ll do it."

"Excellent."

Evenson smiled.

"From now on, you’ll be working with these two."

He nodded toward the twins.

"And trust me."

"If you ever decide to betray me..."

"They’re capable of far worse than Whitney Frost."

"I believe you."

Oddly enough, making the decision relaxed her.

Then another thought struck her.

"...Wait."

"I thought you said this was a company."

She glanced at the two demonesses.

"I was expecting... a cult. Or some ancient secret order."

"It is a company."

Evenson shrugged.

"They’re major shareholders."

Which was technically true.

The board only had three members.

"Demons run corporations now?"

Dottie looked genuinely unable to process that sentence.

Evenson blinked.

"So?"

"Devils have been making business deals since the beginning of civilization."

"We’re just doing the paperwork properly."

Dottie had absolutely no response to that.

"All right."

Evenson lifted one finger.

"Time for a nap."

"I’ve got real work to do."

He tapped her lightly on the forehead.

Before she could utter another word, her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed into a deep, magical sleep.

Aurecess walked over to Peggy Carter and studied the intricate fel tattoos burned across her body.

"Seriously..."

She glanced sideways at Evenson.

"Do you actually know how the Illidari perform this transformation?"

Evenson answered with complete sincerity.

"Not even a little."
