"I... don’t know how to describe what I saw."

Peggy Carter’s voice trembled.

The emerald fel fire burning in her eyes flickered unsteadily, reflecting emotions she had not felt in decades.

"I saw the smoldering remains of countless worlds..."

Her breathing quickened.

"I saw twisted... hateful creatures gathering into endless armies that marched across reality itself."

Her expression slowly changed.

Fear lingered there.

So did the edge of madness.

"They waged a crusade that stretched to the very limits of creation."

"They swore to reduce every world to ashes with green fire."

She clutched at her head.

"They’re going to destroy everything."

Her voice rose into a desperate scream.

"This world..."

"...every world..."

"...will burn!"

Thoom!

Evenson drove the butt of his staff into the floor.

An invisible wave rippled through the room.

Peggy stiffened.

The panic faded from her eyes as the intrusive memories were violently pushed back beneath the surface.

She gasped for air.

Then seized Evenson by both arms.

"What were those?"

"What did I see?"

Her voice bordered on desperation.

Immediately after the ritual had finished, fragments of impossible memories had flooded into her mind.

Before she’d had time to process them, Evenson had interrupted her.

Then she’d seen Steve again after sixty years.

Everything else had been forgotten in the rush of reunion.

Only now, forced to confront those visions again, did she truly appreciate their horror.

"Spectral Sight."

Evenson gently removed her hands from his sleeves.

"The power of a warlock is ancient."

"Far older than humanity."

His mysterious smile returned.

"In fact..."

"It doesn’t originate from this world at all."

In truth, Peggy hadn’t witnessed the future.

Nor had she received some cosmic prophecy.

What she had experienced were merely shattered memories left behind within the Doomguard’s soul.

She had viewed them from the demon’s own perspective.

A firsthand glimpse of countless worlds consumed by fire.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Peggy fell silent.

During her years with S.H.I.E.L.D., she’d learned enough classified information to know intelligent life existed beyond Earth.

The Tesseract.

The Obelisk.

Countless unexplained artifacts.

She had never seen proof with her own eyes.

Until today.

"When someone inherits this power..."

Evenson’s expression grew solemn.

"...and completes the ascension..."

"...they witness our oldest enemy."

He looked directly into her burning green eyes.

"The destroyers of worlds."

"The Burning Legion."

Peggy swallowed.

"So it was all real?"

"Everything I saw?"

She had lived through World War II.

She had witnessed humanity invent weapons capable of erasing entire cities.

Compared to what she had just experienced...

Those horrors seemed almost insignificant.

"...Will they come here?"

She wanted him to deny it.

More than anything.

"I don’t know."

Evenson very nearly answered, Depends on whether I decide to summon them.

Instead, he spoke evenly.

"They’ve already found countless other worlds."

"You’ve seen what became of them."

Peggy closed her eyes.

Broken planets.

Smoldering fragments drifting through endless darkness.

She had seen.

"You’ve witnessed what I have."

"You understand the fate awaiting us."

Evenson’s voice carried quiet conviction.

"So tell me."

"Will you fight?"

"Will you dedicate yourself to resisting the Burning Legion?"

Peggy hesitated.

"...Can we win?"

It was a natural question.

Anyone who had seen the Legion’s conquests might lose the courage to resist.

Evenson’s eyes narrowed.

"Why would you ask me that?"

He stepped forward.

Once.

Twice.

Each word struck harder than the last.

"Do you lack the resolve to defend this world?"

"Or was I mistaken about your strength?"

Peggy’s jaw tightened.

The challenge ignited something inside her.

With a rush of emerald fire, enormous black wings burst from her back once more.

Fel tattoos blazed across her skin.

Her flesh darkened into demonic armor.

Curved horns erupted from her brow.

The Demon Hunter form returned.

"I’ll show you..."

"...exactly how strong my resolve is."

Evenson smiled.

Now that was the answer he had wanted.

"Good."

"One more thing."

"Don’t tell anyone about what you’ve seen."

Peggy snorted softly.

"You don’t need to teach me how to keep secrets."

She had helped found S.H.I.E.L.D.

Even if she revealed everything she’d witnessed, no one would believe her.

At best they’d dismiss it as fantasy.

At worst they’d label her delusional.

Either way, nothing would be gained.

Then Peggy smiled.

"So..."

"When you approached me, you claimed you wanted my help dealing with Hydra."

She folded her arms.

"Now I’m beginning to suspect that was only an excuse to lure me here."

"I never lied."

Evenson smiled back.

"Hydra is still an enemy."

"They obstruct everything I’m trying to accomplish."

"As long as Hydra exists, I can’t fully prepare for the disaster that’s coming."

"What about S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

Peggy asked quietly.

"If Hydra is an obstacle..."

"...what is S.H.I.E.L.D. to you?"

After everything that had happened, one thing had become painfully obvious.

Evenson Richter was not a loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. operative.

His smile turned strangely bitter.

"I told you."

"I never lied."

"S.H.I.E.L.D. stopped existing years ago."

Silence followed.

Peggy understood.

If Evenson’s conclusions were correct...

The organization she’d devoted half her life to was nothing more than Hydra wearing S.H.I.E.L.D.’s skin.

If a healthy tree had a few insects, you removed the insects.

If the entire tree had rotted from the inside...

You burned the whole thing down.

Her life’s work.

Reduced to ashes.

Evenson noticed the grief in her expression and deliberately changed the subject.

"Enough of that."

"I have something for you."

"Given what you’ve become, conventional weapons aren’t going to cut it anymore."

"So..."

"I made these."

He opened his pack.

A Demon Hunter’s traditional weapons were warglaives.

Unfortunately, they were notoriously difficult to master.

Handing a beginner a pair of warglaives was an excellent way to ensure they accidentally dismembered themselves before reaching the battlefield.

Evenson preferred practicality.

He produced the first weapon.

"This is Havoc."

It resembled a half-meter flintlock pistol forged entirely from steel.

A wicked blade ran beneath the barrel from the trigger guard to the muzzle, allowing it to double as a short cleaver in close combat.

Runes engraved around the barrel shimmered faintly.

It could fire conventional ammunition.

Or channel fel energy directly into devastating magical shots.

Then he lifted the second weapon.

"And this..."

"...is Vengeance."

A brutal one-handed battle axe.

Its cold steel head was lined with vicious serrated hooks that looked perfectly designed to remove several pounds of flesh with every swing.

The design was instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with Azeroth.

It was modeled after the famed Royal Axe of Lordaeron.

Granted...

With Evenson’s current blacksmithing skill and the materials available on Earth...

It was probably more accurate to call it the Lordaeron Farmer’s Axe.

Still.

It looked impressive.

He proudly presented both weapons.

"Agent Carter."

"I personally enchanted these three days ago in a little blacksmith shop in the Scottish Highlands."

"They’re exceptional."

Peggy stared at him.

Then at the weapons.

Then back at him.

For the first time since witnessing worlds consumed by the Burning Legion...

She found herself wondering if humanity’s future might actually be in trouble.
