A Sleeper Agent was an operative embedded deep inside an enemy organization.
They received no routine orders.
They sent back no intelligence.
For years, sometimes decades, they lived ordinary lives until the day a single activation command arrived.
Only then did they move.
The concept was frighteningly effective.
But a Deep Sleeper was something else entirely.
A Deep Sleeper wasn’t merely kept in the dark.
They didn’t even know they were an undercover agent.
Their own organization genuinely abandoned them. Persecuted them. Treated them as expendable.
Every betrayal was real.
Every hardship was authentic.
Only by deceiving the agent themselves could they earn the complete trust of everyone else.
There was no lie more convincing than the truth.
Of course, the idea suffered from one rather obvious flaw.
If your organization had truly discarded you...
Why would you ever come back?
Blind loyalty wasn’t exactly common.
As far as intelligence theory went, Deep Sleepers remained little more than a thought experiment.
Which was precisely why Peggy Carter wasn’t buying it.
"Come on, Dottie."
"We both know Deep Sleepers don’t actually exist."
"And Leviathan is gone. Even if you were one..."
"Who would still be around to activate you?"
Leviathan had once been Dottie’s masters.
The same shadow organization that had eventually given birth to the Red Room.
Dottie lowered her head.
"I used to think Leviathan was gone too."
"It started as an independent Soviet intelligence organization."
"Its purpose was creating operatives like me."
She snorted.
"Then some bald idiot took power."
"He forced Leviathan into the KGB."
"That was when I lost contact with the organization."
"Damn revisionists."
"Damn bald men."
Nick Fury gave her an icy stare.
She waved dismissively.
"Not you."
"I wasn’t talking about you."
She continued without missing a beat.
"I thought that first bald fool was bad."
"Then an even bigger bald fool came along."
"The Soviet Union collapsed."
"Without Mother Russia to keep everyone together..."
"Leviathan collapsed with it."
She sighed dramatically.
"Bald men ruin everything."
Fury’s expression darkened further.
Dottie quickly corrected herself.
"You’re bald by choice."
"That’s different."
For perhaps the first time in years, Nick Fury briefly considered growing his hair back.
When the Soviet Union fell, chaos followed.
Government institutions fractured.
The economy imploded.
The new administration couldn’t even afford to pay its own military.
Budget cuts became inevitable.
The KGB reorganized.
Affiliated divisions were dismantled.
Leviathan disappeared.
At least...
Officially.
"The day that strange man took me away," Dottie continued, "I suddenly received a message."
Peggy frowned.
"...From Leviathan?"
"Not exactly."
She thought for a moment.
"The organization died."
"But the people survived."
Dottie smiled.
"Exactly."
"Leviathan was one of the finest intelligence organizations in the world."
"You know that better than anyone."
She glanced toward Natasha.
"My junior proved that."
"She’s done rather well for herself."
No one in SHIELD argued.
They had fought Leviathan for years.
And Natasha Romanoff, one of their greatest agents, had emerged from that very system.
"When Leviathan dissolved," Dottie continued, "the people scattered."
"Some who knew too much were quietly executed."
"Others became freelance operatives."
"Some joined new organizations."
"And a few, still loyal to the old country, were quietly recruited into Russia’s successor agencies."
Nick Fury folded his arms.
"So who activated you?"
"The Tesseract theft only happened days ago."
"Whoever contacted you gathered intelligence, organized personnel, and infiltrated my Helicarrier almost immediately."
"That isn’t ordinary."
"I only joined recently," Dottie admitted.
"I don’t know much."
"But I do know this."
"They’re incredibly capable."
"They gave me these new powers."
"They taught me how to turn what I feared most..."
"...into my greatest weapon."
Shadow.
Dottie had always feared Shadow magic.
Saralor had chosen the simplest possible cure.
Flood her with it.
Enough Shadow energy had been poured directly into her body to overwrite years of instinctive fear.
The result spoke for itself.
She could dissolve into living darkness.
Fire Shadow-infused rounds without ammunition.
Transform terror into strength.
Fury leaned forward.
"The organization’s name."
Now he truly cared.
Fast intelligence gathering.
Advanced human enhancement.
Resources beyond ordinary governments.
It reminded him of another shadowy corporation he’d been tracking for years.
A corporation that had disappeared just when it became most suspicious.
Dottie slowly turned.
She pulled back her sleeve.
An insignia came into view.
A red-and-white umbrella.
"Umbrella."
Fury’s jaw tightened.
"Damn it."
Umbrella had resurfaced.
Of all times...
Why now?
"What does your company want?"
Fury didn’t expect much.
From everything he’d heard, Dottie sounded like little more than a recently recruited field operative.
Someone useful, but hardly trusted with major secrets.
If only he knew.
Almost every senior member of Umbrella was already aboard this Helicarrier.
And the woman standing before him personally knew every member of the company’s board.
"Our objective..."
Dottie answered without hesitation.
"A united front."
She paused, recalling the exact wording Saralor had rehearsed with her while casually watching a science documentary.
Then, adopting a more formal tone, she continued.
"Our company has had... disagreements... with SHIELD."
"But we are all human."
"When facing an extraterrestrial threat, humanity should stand together."
"If Earth falls to an alien invasion..."
"Our company’s long-term goals become meaningless."
She looked directly at Fury.
"This message is offered as a gesture of goodwill."
Fury narrowed his eye.
"And if I refuse your goodwill?"
Dottie’s expression turned cold.
"If you reject our offer..."
"Umbrella will immediately initiate Operation Valkyrie."
She spoke each word with chilling certainty.
"The Helium-3 superweapon, Ragnarok, has already been fully charged."
"We will conduct saturation strikes on every location that could possibly contain the Tesseract."
Silence settled over the command center.
It wasn’t a threat made in anger.
It sounded far worse.
It sounded like company policy.
