"Good. We’ll leave the rest in your hands."
Aurecess stretched lazily before settling back into her chair.
"We’re about to become very busy ourselves."
General Ross had already played his role during the Battle of New York. Now came the difficult part: turning that public performance into lasting political influence. His heroic image would need careful cultivation if it was to become the foundation of a successful campaign. Their newly established company also required proper management, along with negotiations, contracts, and, most importantly, deeper ties with the U.S. military.
All of it would be handled by the Eredar Twins.
Neither of them minded.
Manipulating powerful people who believed themselves impossible to deceive...
Watching the public confidently accept carefully crafted lies...
Those were pleasures worthy of high-ranking demons.
"But," Saloras said as she rose from her seat, "business is finished."
She walked behind Evenson and rested both hands on his shoulders.
He nearly jumped out of his chair.
"...Now we should settle our personal matters."
Fresh beads of sweat immediately formed on his forehead.
We’re still talking about that?
Aurecess smiled with obvious amusement.
"Some words aren’t meant to be spoken lightly."
She turned and disappeared into the twins’ private suite.
Saloras looked back over one shoulder.
"Have you prepared to take responsibility for what you said?"
Evenson silently considered his options.
Can I request humane treatment?
Saloras merely snorted.
Before entering the room, she casually lifted the bottle of wine and the two glasses in her hand, giving them a subtle shake before closing the door behind her.
Evenson remained frozen for several long seconds.
Then he violently shook his head.
Even though he’d remained spectacularly inexperienced in certain aspects of life until now...
He wasn’t dense enough to miss an invitation that obvious.
This has to be a trap.
They’re demons.
There’s definitely a catch.
His eyes hardened with determination.
"...Fine."
"I’ll go in there..."
"...and teach those two a lesson."
He pushed open the door.
That night...
Thunder rolled.
Lightning flashed.
Rain battered the city.
And certain events were left mercifully undescribed.
The following morning...
Evenson sat on the edge of the bed with a cigarette between his fingers.
His mind was an absolute disaster.
How did I end up in there...?
And then...
Meanwhile, the two Eredar seemed completely unconcerned.
Neither made the slightest effort to hide their true forms as they moved around the room. Saloras poured herself another glass of wine while Aurecess calmly adjusted her hair.
The sight alone made Evenson’s thoughts derail all over again.
They’re dangerous...
Absolutely dangerous.
So this is how my lifelong dream of remaining an untouched archmage comes to an end...
He cleared his throat awkwardly.
"About... last night..."
For some reason, he felt that, as the only human in the room, he ought to say something meaningful.
Unfortunately...
He had no idea what that something was.
"If you’re about to discuss our relationship..."
Saloras spoke first.
"Don’t."
Compared to Evenson’s hesitation, her tone was perfectly composed.
Aurecess gathered her crimson hair over one shoulder and regarded him lazily.
"Don’t mistake us for human women."
"Sleeping together changes nothing."
Evenson blinked.
"Then... last night was..."
"Love is a mortal concern."
Aurecess dismissed the very idea with a wave of her hand.
"We are proud Eredar."
"Our hearts are harder than steel."
"We don’t burden ourselves with such fragile emotions."
"So don’t misunderstand."
Saloras looked down at him with faint amusement.
"Consider it a reward for loyal service."
"And the natural possessiveness one feels toward something... interesting."
"Don’t attach sentimental fantasies to us."
Evenson stared for several seconds.
These two really are... refreshingly direct.
Then another thought occurred to him.
Hold on.
I never even mentioned love.
Why are they denying something I wasn’t accusing them of?
Eventually he stood, dressed, and bowed with exaggerated formality.
"Then I gratefully accept the reward bestowed upon me by my esteemed patrons."
The twins leaned comfortably against one another.
"Excellent."
"As long as you continue serving us faithfully..."
"We’re never stingy with rewards."
"In that case," Evenson said, fastening his coat, "I’ll take my leave."
"I have work waiting."
Both twins nodded together.
"You may go."
Evenson reached the door before suddenly remembering something.
"There may be... a rather unusual visitor coming to see me soon."
Saloras raised an eyebrow.
"Friend or enemy?"
"I’m honestly not sure."
He pursed his lips.
"Whoever she is..."
"She’s incredibly powerful."
"I’m not convinced I could defeat her."
"So when she arrives..."
"I’d appreciate it if the two of you were nearby."
"No problem."
Saloras answered without hesitation.
"We’ve wanted to meet her ourselves."
Aurecess narrowed her eyes.
"The Sorcerer Supreme..."
"The Guardian."
She smiled coldly.
"I’d like to see how she compares to Aegwynn."
After leaving the nightclub, Evenson returned home.
Much of the surrounding neighborhood had suffered heavy damage during the invasion.
His own little shop...
Against all logic...
Was still standing.
Embarrassing though it was to admit...
That shabby two-story building was, in fact, his mage tower.
A mage tower was a tool, not a monument.
As long as it contained everything a spellcaster needed, there was little point in constructing some enormous palace of marble and gold.
Building a skyscraper rivaling Stark Tower would only attract attention...
And bankrupt him.
For a humble two-story workshop, however...
Its defensive wards had proven remarkably reliable.
Even the Chitauri hadn’t managed to tear it down.
After finally getting a full night’s sleep in his own bed...
Evenson climbed into his car the next morning and headed for S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters.
If he intended to muddy the waters...
He needed the biggest stick available.
Nick Fury had only recently returned himself.
Unfortunately, rest wasn’t an option.
Cleaning up after an alien invasion generated enough paperwork to bury armies.
Loki’s custody wasn’t particularly troublesome.
Neither was the Tesseract.
Both would simply be handed over to Asgard.
The World Security Council had voiced objections, but even they understood there wasn’t a better solution.
The real headache was controlling the narrative.
The public didn’t need to know every detail.
Especially not the part where the organization tasked with protecting Earth had accidentally helped trigger an alien invasion.
S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Council needed distance from the disaster.
Public opinion needed careful guidance.
Fury was still drowning in reports when Evenson walked into his office.
Fury looked up with bloodshot eyes.
"What do you want?"
Evenson smiled innocently.
"Hypothetically..."
"If I argued that the Battle of New York was well outside my contractual obligations..."
"...and requested hazard pay..."
He lifted his heavily bandaged right arm.
"...along with permanent disability compensation..."
"...what would your answer be?"
Fury slowly placed the file in his hand onto the desk.
He stared at Evenson for several silent seconds.
"Politely?"
"I’d ask you to close the door on your way out."
Evenson laughed awkwardly and scratched the back of his head.
"Fair enough."
His smile disappeared.
"But..."
"What if I wanted to discuss that nuclear missile?"
Fury’s expression changed immediately.
He leaned forward.
"Then..."
"We have something worth talking about."
