Evenson was certain he’d heard the name Guler before.

He was equally certain he’d never actually met the man.

So where had he heard it?

More importantly, who around him would have any reason to know a drug lord like Guler?

There were only two possibilities.

The Eredar Twins.

Evenson stood at the edge of the ridge and looked down toward the ruins. The distance made it difficult to see clearly, but he could just make out the two women accompanying Guler.

One wore red.

The other wore blue.

It couldn’t really be them.

Could it?

Evenson tugged at his collar. Despite the approaching winter and the freezing Eastern European air, he suddenly felt uncomfortably warm.

Slowly, he covered his left eye.

A pale green eyeball slipped silently from beneath his hand and shot toward the ruins below.

Kilrogg’s Eye.

No one noticed it as it flew through the air.

"Ladies, I guarantee you won’t regret coming."

After exchanging a few words with the other guests, Guler returned to his convoy and addressed the two veiled women with exaggerated deference.

Guler was around fifty years old. Perhaps because of his heritage, his hair had gone completely white, which he kept cropped into a military-style buzz cut.

Unlike most men his age, however, he had managed to avoid the usual middle-aged spread.

He also lacked the gaudy gold chains, oversized watches, and other vulgar displays of wealth favored by many of his profession.

Instead, he wore jungle combat gear.

At a glance, he looked less like a major drug lord and more like a battle-hardened soldier.

A long scar ran across his angular face, stretching from his brow all the way to the corner of his mouth. It gave the impression that his right eye had been split in two.

It was the scar that had earned him the nickname the Three-Eyed Drug King.

Yet now that intimidating face was twisted into an expression of humility bordering on outright flattery.

Anyone who knew Guler’s reputation would have found the sight almost unbelievable.

In the jungles of South America, Guler was a king in all but name. Government forces and guerrillas alike treated him with respect, because neither side could afford to anger the man who controlled so much of the region’s drug trade.

These two women, however, didn’t seem impressed.

If anything, they looked bored.

The woman in blue spoke first.

"This had better be as interesting as you promised. We could use something to take our minds off things."

"We’re already in a terrible mood," the woman in red snapped.

"If this turns out to be boring, or worse, makes us even more irritated, you know what will happen."

As she spoke, she raised one hand.

Guler immediately took two cautious steps backward, making sure that hand couldn’t reach him.

He lowered his head and gave an awkward laugh.

"I assure you, my ladies. You won’t be disappointed."

He secretly glanced at them.

Their faces were hidden behind black veils, making their expressions impossible to read.

After hesitating, Guler cautiously asked, "Forgive my impertinence, but what sort of person could possibly have upset you?"

He quickly added, "If you would rather not deal with them yourselves, my men can handle it."

"That’s none of your concern."

The woman in red answered coldly before turning away and examining the ancient ruins.

The woman in blue glanced at her companion and sighed.

"Our pet seems to have run away with a stray cat."

Guler froze.

A pet?

Had these two women somehow acquired a runaway husky?

He quickly abandoned the thought.

Trying to understand the minds of these two women by ordinary standards was a good way to get yourself killed.

Guler was terrified of them.

Normally, he was one of the most powerful figures in the international drug trade. He controlled supply lines throughout the Americas and Europe, as well as parts of Asia. Dealers farther down the chain had no choice but to bow and scrape before him.

If Guler decided to cut off someone’s supply, that person’s life could become a living nightmare overnight.

Then, one day, he received an enormous order from the United States.

The buyer had been extraordinarily generous, paying the deposit without hesitation.

Guler had been eager to accept.

There was only one problem.

The requested shipment was enormous.

It represented more than half of what his American distributors normally received.

After some consideration, Guler rejected the deal.

If he suddenly diverted such a massive shipment to a new buyer, his existing American partners might assume he was preparing to replace them.

That violated the rules of the trade.

Until this new buyer proved they had enough power to justify such a change, Guler had no intention of abandoning his existing network.

There was another issue.

Scarcity kept prices high.

Dumping such a huge shipment into the American market would drive prices down, which was obviously terrible for business.

So he refused.

That very night, two women appeared inside his room without making the slightest sound.

They left the severed heads of several members of the Asian organization he’d recently been dealing with on his desk.

At that point, Guler had very little left to deliberate.

First, they’d demonstrated their power.

Second, the Asian supply he’d been dealing with had suddenly become available.

He could find another buyer.

What he hadn’t expected was that the real surprise was only beginning.

The two women revealed their true forms.

Demons.

They displayed power so overwhelming that when Guler, panicking, summoned a large force of armed men, a single glance from either woman reduced them to pools of steaming sludge.

That answered every question Guler had.

He had been willing to serve the devil for profit.

There was no reason he couldn’t serve demons for the same reason.

From that day onward, he treated the two women like royalty.

The best shipments always went to them first.

And when he received word from his former employer about the strange new power rising in the human world, Guler immediately reported it to his new masters.

The Dark Lord.

The new ruler of humanity.

Fine.

Let them meet.

Guler was curious to see who truly deserved his loyalty.

The two women were, of course, the Eredar Twins.

Alythess wore red.

Sacrolash wore blue.

The moment they’d received Guler’s information, the twins had become intensely interested.

They had been miserable lately.

At least this promised to be entertaining.

Sacrolash had barely finished speaking when she suddenly sensed something watching them.

She didn’t react.

Instead, she casually surveyed the area.

Then she spotted it.

Hidden among the grass some distance away was a green eyeball, quietly observing them.

The corner of Sacrolash’s mouth curled into a mysterious smile.

Then it vanished.

She flicked one finger.

The eyeball exploded.

"Kilrogg’s Eye."

Sacrolash walked over to her companion and whispered,

"He’s here."

"Really?"

Alythess’s voice rose with unmistakable excitement.

"Did he come after us?"

"Of course not."

Sacrolash shook her head.

"I’d rather believe he came to investigate what’s happening here."

She nodded toward the ruins.

"And if he’s here, that little stray cat must be here too."

"Hmph."

Alythess turned her head away with a cold snort.

She looked almost sulky.

Sacrolash lowered her voice.

"I’m warning you. If we meet him later, we need to keep our dignity. Don’t do anything that would compromise our status."

She paused.

"He’s our pet. He should understand his place."

Her eyes narrowed beneath the veil.

"Don’t expect us to throw ourselves into his arms."
