The sooner they finished this, the sooner they could go home.
Or, more importantly, the sooner the Eredar Twins could deal with that unfaithful pet of theirs.
The twins were still furious about what had happened.
That day, they’d left in a huff, deliberately maintaining their dignity while waiting for Evenson to come crawling back and apologize.
He never did.
Hours passed.
Then a day.
Then another.
Eventually, they sent their second-in-command, Luther, to find out what was going on.
His report nearly made them explode.
Evenson and Clea had already been gone for several days.
Their minds immediately filled with horrifying possibilities.
Running away together.
A romantic getaway.
A honeymoon.
Faced with such a grave crisis, the twins abandoned all pretense of dignity and went straight to Evenson’s shop.
As luck would have it, Hubs had just returned from his walk.
Alythess grabbed him by the scruff of the neck without saying a word and hauled him into the air.
Then came the interrogation.
Smack.
"You’re going to tell us!"
Smack.
"Tell us!"
Smack.
"Tell us!"
By the time she was done, Hubs was on the verge of a concussion.
He twisted his head around, his husky face filled with righteous indignation.
"Would you two actually ask me something first?!"
"Cough."
Sacrolash cleared her throat and gave her sister a disapproving look.
That temper really needed work.
She turned her attention to Hubs.
"Where did your master go with that little stray cat?"
She narrowed her eyes.
"Did they run away together?"
Hubs looked horrified.
"I never said I wasn’t going to tell you!"
Faced with the threat to his skull, the husky immediately demonstrated the defining virtue of his species.
He sold Evenson out completely.
By the time he’d finished explaining everything, the twins finally relaxed.
So they hadn’t run away together.
It was just a work assignment.
"Listen carefully, puppy."
Alythess looked down at him.
"If you tell anyone what happened today, I’ll roast you alive and turn you into an infernal hot dog."
Hubs hugged his own head and trembled.
He swore he’d keep his mouth shut.
He would be the very definition of canine discretion.
"And one more thing..."
Sacrolash’s smile became distinctly sinister.
"If that man does anything suspicious in the future, do you know what you’re supposed to do?"
"Immediately report it to the Twin Queens!"
Hubs stuck out his tongue and answered with the most obedient expression he could manage.
"Excellent."
Sacrolash nodded approvingly.
She also made it clear that loyal dogs would be rewarded.
There would be plenty of premium dog food.
Hubs’ eyes lit up.
From that day onward, he kept a little notebook with him at all times.
Evenson had no idea his own dog had just become a private investigator and tabloid reporter planted inside his household.
He was currently dealing with considerably more immediate problems.
Riding atop his Nightmare, Evenson stared nervously at the enormous lava lake behind him.
It stretched for miles.
"Those two women really have no sense of proportion."
He wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"They actually used something that powerful."
He glanced to the side.
Locke was fleeing down the road in an SUV at full speed.
Behind him, the Ancient One pursued him while standing atop a glowing disc.
Evenson couldn’t let her get there first.
He needed Locke alive.
He intended to throw the demon’s avatar into Hell personally.
If the Ancient One turned him into sliced demon meat first, that would create a serious logistical problem.
At minimum, Evenson would have to throw the pieces into Hell several times.
He opened a mental connection with the twins.
"Stay right there. Don’t wander off."
He hesitated.
"I’ll go buy some oranges..."
He caught himself.
"Actually, I’ll finish this and come back to see you."
The twins were standing in the middle of the lava.
Both exchanged strange looks.
They’d initially been quite pleased when Evenson said he’d come back to see them after handling his business.
But for some reason, the wording left them feeling as though he’d just taken advantage of them somehow.
Sacrolash looked down at the man she’d dragged out of the lava.
"Are you still alive?"
Guler had been lucky.
He’d always been diligent about paying tribute, and he’d happened to be standing beside the twins when the lava erupted.
So they’d casually brought him along.
The tobacco executives hadn’t been so fortunate.
The twins considered smoking bad for one’s health.
And, more importantly, they hadn’t found them interesting.
Guler gave a tiny nod.
He was alive.
Barely.
He was also approximately one degree away from being roasted alive.
"We just saved your life."
Sacrolash looked down at him.
"You understand what you’re supposed to do from now on, don’t you?"
Guler’s voice was weak.
"I understand."
He swallowed.
"From now on, I’ll double the quality shipments."
He paused.
"And you won’t have to pay."
Alythess smiled faintly.
"Don’t underestimate us."
"We aren’t interested in draining you dry."
She sounded almost magnanimous.
"I’ll pay half your costs."
Guler was moved to the point of near tears.
The Twin Queens were truly paragons of generosity.
A model for all of them.
Meanwhile, Evenson opened his communicator.
"Melinda, get everyone aboard and take off immediately. Follow that SUV."
Then, after a brief pause, he added defensively,
"What? You’re asking what happened?"
He glanced toward the enormous lava field.
"That was definitely my spell."
He spoke quickly.
"There were so many dark mages that I couldn’t be bothered killing them one by one. Taking them all out at once was simply more efficient."
He cleared his throat.
"No need to be surprised."
"I’m just that good."
Meanwhile, Locke continued driving.
The Ancient One continued pursuing him.
But a mere avatar had little hope of escaping the Sorcerer Supreme.
Eventually, the Ancient One grew tired of the chase.
She raised her right hand.
A semicircular magical construct appeared above her palm, resembling a giant protractor.
She swung it once.
Space itself distorted.
The road beneath Locke’s SUV began moving backward like a treadmill.
He pressed the accelerator.
The engine screamed.
The car still moved backward.
No matter how hard he drove, the distance between him and the Ancient One continued shrinking.
The Ancient One descended.
She reached the vehicle, opened the driver’s door, and dragged Locke out.
He tried to resist.
But the poisonous fumes he’d released earlier had pushed his already fragile body to its limit.
He had nothing left.
The Ancient One’s patience finally snapped.
This creature had escaped Hell, started causing trouble, and interrupted what little rest she’d managed to get.
She’d barely had time to recover, and now he was causing another disaster.
Enough.
With a swift motion, she severed both of Locke’s legs and threw him to the ground.
Her foot came down on his neck.
Her blade rose.
She was about to finish him.
Then a voice rang out in the distance.
"WAIT!"
The Ancient One looked up.
Evenson was riding toward her at full speed.
Or, more accurately, his horse was galloping furiously in place.
The space around the road was still distorted.
No matter how hard the Nightmare ran, it couldn’t move forward.
"Elder Gu!"
Evenson shouted.
"Please turn off the spatial magic!"
The Ancient One’s expression darkened.
With a small wave of her hand, the distortion vanished.
The world snapped back into normal space.
Evenson immediately reached her side.
He dismounted and straightened his clothes.
"Greetings, Sorcerer Supreme. It’s been several days. I trust you’ve been well?"
The Ancient One had no interest in small talk.
Instead, she looked at him.
"I didn’t expect it to begin so quickly."
"What?"
Evenson blinked.
"The Dark Ascension."
She nudged the fallen Locke with her foot.
"He should count as one of the signs you described, shouldn’t he?"
"I suppose he does."
Evenson thought about it.
Then he decided to follow her reasoning.
"I’ve never heard of a demon’s avatar betraying its master."
He glanced down at Locke.
"And the appearance of a Child of the Dark is rarer than winning the lottery."
He spread his hands.
"Yet both things have happened during this unusual period."
His expression became thoughtful.
"Unless they’re being influenced by the Dark Ascension, I can’t think of another explanation."
