"Wow..."

Mephisto frowned thoughtfully.

"That sounds pretty terrifying."

His tone, however, made it clear that he wasn’t particularly worried.

Evenson rubbed his forehead.

"I think we may not have explained it clearly enough. You don’t seem to fully appreciate how terrifying an Entropius actually is."

"Then you’re underestimating me."

Mephisto waved a hand dismissively.

"I know exactly what happens when an energy-based lifeform exhausts its essence and is forced to split itself apart just to maintain its basic existence. I also understand what happens when entropy values change that violently."

He smiled smugly.

"I’ve dealt with plenty of human scientists over the years. Some of them were even considered pioneers in their fields."

He tapped his chest.

"I taught a few of them their theories."

"You?"

Evenson’s eyebrow twitched.

The idea of a Lord of Hell personally teaching scientific theory was so absurd that his mind briefly went somewhere else entirely.

Do university professors secretly teach alchemy on weekends?

"What’s so strange about that?"

Mephisto looked genuinely puzzled.

"How do you think Judaism, Christianity, and the other major religions gradually declined?"

Evenson said nothing.

"Did you think I personally went around corrupting every believer one by one?"

Mephisto snorted.

"I don’t have that kind of free time."

"The biggest reason those old beliefs declined was the rise of natural science."

He spread his hands.

"All I had to do was give humanity a tiny push. Show them a few basic rules governing how the world works, and eventually they started saying goodbye to their old beliefs on their own."

Evenson raised a thumb.

"That’s ruthless."

He had to admit, it was an impressive strategy.

"Cut the roots instead of fighting the branches."

Then another thought occurred to him.

"But didn’t that hurt you too? If people stopped believing in and worshiping gods, wouldn’t they also stop believing in and worshiping devils?"

He paused.

"And I’m guessing all those over-the-top Satanists running around shouting about the Devil don’t exactly count as serious believers."

"It doesn’t matter."

Mephisto shrugged.

"I don’t need humanity to worship me."

"I just need them willing to make deals with me."

He smiled.

"In fact, blind faith and worship are terrible for my business."

Evenson stared at him.

Now that was cunning.

As religious belief declined, people became less likely to take the existence of devils and souls seriously.

So when someone showed up claiming to be the Devil and offered a soul contract, most people wouldn’t react with fear.

They’d assume the stranger was insane.

Or running some elaborate prank.

And that was exactly when careless young idiots signed away their souls.

Evenson decided not to pursue the subject.

A warlock criticizing someone for tricking people into surrendering their souls was a little too hypocritical for comfort.

"Fine."

He shook his head.

"If you understand the theory and you understand how dangerous an Entropius is, why do you seem so confident?"

"If we were anywhere else, I’d be extremely wary of one."

Mephisto’s mouth curved upward.

"But if we’re in Hell?"

He smiled.

"Then there’s nothing to fear."

Evenson waited.

"Lucifer is a Lord of Hell in name only. He possesses no real authority over the realm."

Mephisto’s confidence surged.

"I do."

"So do the other Lords."

"We possess genuine dominion over Hell. Nothing can defeat us here."

He spread his arms dramatically.

"I am Hell."

Aureseus covered her forehead.

"Right. I get it."

She sighed.

"Hell is essentially your giant domain, and as one of its Lords, you can draw enormous power from it."

She looked at him.

"That’s not exactly a groundbreaking ability."

Salora gave Mephisto a sympathetic shake of the head.

"Elemental Lords have died inside their own domains."

"The Lord of Air was kicked to death on the Throne of the Four Winds."

"The Lord of Fire was killed in the Firelands."

"The Lord of Water was beaten half to death beneath the ocean."

She shrugged.

"It’s happened before."

"So where exactly did all that confidence come from?"

Mephisto’s expression stiffened.

But Salora wasn’t finished.

"And by the time you’re dealing with an Entropius, Hell might not even be Hell anymore."

Mephisto’s eyes widened.

"What?"

"When a Naaru undergoes entropy, it instinctively opens a portal to the Void."

Her voice became colder.

"Void creatures will pour through."

"And the Void itself will begin assimilating everything around it."

She looked directly at him.

"Hell will become Void."

Silence.

Evenson couldn’t help grinning.

"So your home-field advantage becomes a home-field disadvantage."

"That’s rough."

Cold sweat immediately broke out across Mephisto’s forehead.

His confidence had always come from one fundamental advantage.

Hell was his territory.

Inside it, he was monstrously powerful.

But if his opponent could turn the entire battlefield into something else, then the game had changed completely.

An enemy that could fight you and destroy your home at the same time was a much bigger problem.

Mephisto swallowed.

"You have some way to deal with them, right?"

He looked between the three of them.

Please don’t tell me the plan is "nothing can be done, prepare to die."

Evenson’s eyes suddenly lit up.

"Of course."

He became animated.

"First, you’ll need to gather twenty-four strong teammates."

Mephisto stared.

"Choose a proper raid leader. Assign everyone’s roles."

"Stock up on potions."

"Watch your positioning when the phase changes."

"As long as nobody screws up, you should be able to kill the boss."

Evenson grinned.

"And if a ring drops, or one of those pink shards, remember to pass them to me."

Mephisto went completely still.

He stared at Evenson for several long seconds.

Then he slowly leaned to one side, stepped around him, and looked at the Eredar Twins.

"Please."

He pointed at Evenson.

"Take this man somewhere and make him take his medication."

The Twins’ mouths twitched.

Salora sighed.

Then she reached into her personal storage and pulled out a stun gun.

She pressed it against Evenson’s lower back.

"ZZZT!"

Evenson’s entire body convulsed.

"YAAAAAARGH!"

He jerked backward.

Aureseus caught him before he hit the floor.

"Treatment complete."

She looked down at him.

"Feeling better now?"

"Eeh... eeh..."

Evenson continued twitching.

After several seconds, he barely managed to form a sentence.

"I remember M’uru being killed like that..."

Aureseus frowned.

"Because that happened on Azeroth."

She looked genuinely annoyed.

"I’ve told you, that place is weird."

"I still haven’t figured out why my first fireball during the Sunwell incident somehow ended up hitting a turtle."

Evenson stared at her.

The universe, apparently, had been doing its own thing.

Mephisto suddenly clapped his hands.

"Wait."

He looked thoughtful.

"I have another idea."

"The other Lords and I could each contribute a large number of souls from our own territories."

"We dump them all beside Lucifer."

"Let him eat until he’s completely full."

"Then he restores his Light form."

Mephisto smiled.

"And then we send the bastard somewhere far away."

Evenson hesitated.

That was, admittedly, an option.

He really didn’t want to deal with a Naaru in any form.

But if Lucifer remained trapped in Hell, at least there was some time to prepare.

"That might work."

Then Evenson’s expression changed.

"Actually, there’s an even better option."

Mephisto looked at him warily.

"What?"

"Put Lucifer on a diet."

"...A diet?"

"Coordinate with the other Lords."

Evenson became increasingly serious.

"Monitor how much Lucifer consumes."

"Then adjust the number of souls being assigned to his territory."

"Don’t let him starve."

"But don’t let him get full, either."

Evenson spread his hands.

"Keep him permanently stuck somewhere between hungry and satisfied."

He smiled.

"That way, he never has enough energy to recover completely."

"Wouldn’t that be safer?"

Mephisto stared at him.

For once, he seemed genuinely unsure whether Evenson had just offered a brilliant strategic solution or the most ridiculous suggestion he’d ever heard.
