"Three days. Don’t forget."
Mephisto held up three fingers, then turned to leave.
"I’ve got a plot of land to buy. Time to get my club up and running."
"A club?"
Evenson hadn’t expected Mephisto to be quite this literal.
"You’re actually opening a nightclub?"
"Of course."
Mephisto nodded so enthusiastically it looked like someone had turned on a vibration setting.
"Can you think of a better place to meet women?"
He pointed at Evenson.
"When I open, you and the ladies have to come by for a drink. You’ll be among the first customers of what will eventually become America’s number-one nightclub."
"Is there an entrance fee?"
Evenson didn’t even hesitate.
"Hmm?"
Mephisto froze.
After several seconds, he finally managed to answer.
"I can let you drink for free once."
"Deal."
The moment he heard the word free, Evenson agreed without hesitation.
Mephisto stared at him, then sighed inwardly.
Why had he wasted so much time explaining things to this man?
He could have simply thrown two tons of gold at him and probably gotten the same result.
With a final sigh over his own poor negotiating skills, Mephisto’s body slowly dissolved into nothingness and vanished.
"Finally, he’s gone..."
Evenson turned toward the Eredar Twins, intending to discuss one last matter.
Then he stopped.
Both women were staring after Mephisto with enough battle lust in their eyes to start a war.
"America’s number-one nightclub," Alythess said contemptuously. "What an absurd claim."
Sacrolash immediately pulled out her phone and swept one hand through the air with the confidence of a general declaring war.
"Luther! Transfer one hundred million to my nightclub immediately! I want to dominate New York’s entire nightlife industry before the month is over!"
Evenson’s jaw dropped.
Then his survival instincts kicked in.
His hand blurred.
He snatched the phone away so quickly that several afterimages trailed behind his arm.
"Your mistress has clearly inhaled something she shouldn’t have. Please ignore everything she just said."
He hung up, tossed the phone behind him, and then turned back to the twins with tears practically streaming down his face.
"My ladies, please!"
"I worked hard for that money!"
"All sixty billion dollars! Every single cent I’ve saved, I handed over to you two! Please don’t burn through it like this!"
Overcome with grief, Evenson threw his arms around Sacrolash’s leg and began sobbing.
Sacrolash looked down at him.
For several seconds, she seemed genuinely conflicted.
Finally, she sighed and patted his head.
"Don’t cry. There, there."
She awkwardly stroked his hair.
"I won’t transfer the money, all right?"
Evenson’s tears stopped instantly.
He released her leg, stood up, straightened his clothes, and calmly declared, "I knew the two of you were reasonable people. You would never misuse company funds."
"Of course not."
Sacrolash continued soothing him.
"I was only joking."
As she spoke, however, her eyes flicked almost imperceptibly toward Alythess.
The twins had been together for longer than most civilizations lasted.
One glance was enough.
Sacrolash’s meaning was obvious.
I’m only calming him down for now. We control the company’s finances anyway. He has no idea what we’re doing. Once the club starts making money, we can spend whatever we want.
Alythess answered with a look of her own.
I feel a little guilty lying to him. Maybe we should spend less this time.
Sacrolash’s eyes replied:
Why? These businesses belong to both of us and him. Once the nightclub turns a profit, we’ll simply set aside his share.
Alythess still looked unconvinced.
Sacrolash finally relented.
Fine. We’ll spend less. How much?
Fifty million should be enough.
Fine. Done.
The entire conversation took place without a single spoken word.
Evenson, naturally, remained completely oblivious.
"There’s actually one last thing."
He reached into his clothes and pulled out a photograph.
"The people in this picture will be arriving in New York soon. Find a way to bring them into the company."
Sacrolash took the photograph casually.
She glanced at it.
Then froze.
Alythess, standing beside her, looked over as well.
Her expression changed instantly.
She grabbed Evenson by the collar and hauled him off the ground.
"Explain."
Her voice was dangerously calm.
"Who are the woman and the child in this picture?"
Her eyes narrowed.
"Is that your kid?"
Alythess was furious.
She had just been feeling guilty about deceiving Evenson over the company finances, only to discover that the man apparently had a massive secret of his own.
She had tolerated the whole incident involving that young mage.
But this?
A woman with black, curly hair was standing in the photograph with one arm wrapped affectionately around a young boy.
They were obviously mother and son.
This bastard has a secret family?
And apparently he’d even had a child?
Evenson looked like he wanted to cry.
Before Alythess could interrogate him further, Sacrolash reached over and patted her sister on the shoulder.
"Put him down."
Alythess hesitated.
Sacrolash had been startled at first, too, but she had already figured something out.
Alythess reluctantly lowered Evenson.
Evenson immediately adjusted his collar.
"His name is Danny. He’s thirteen. He turned thirteen yesterday."
Alythess narrowed her eyes.
You even know his birthday?
And he still expected her to believe there was nothing going on?
"Hmm..."
Sacrolash gave a knowing little smile.
Then she shoved the photograph into Alythess’s hands.
"Don’t forget that Evenson is only twenty-two."
Alythess froze.
Twenty-two.
Thirteen.
Her eyes widened as the numbers connected.
Nine.
She stared at Evenson.
Then at the photograph.
Then back at Evenson.
Alythess suddenly began laughing awkwardly and patted him repeatedly on the shoulder.
"Haha... I was only joking."
She grinned.
"You were scared, weren’t you?"
Evenson’s mouth twitched.
"Yeah. Absolutely terrified."
Sacrolash studied the photograph again.
"There is something familiar about this boy..."
She touched her chin thoughtfully.
"Wait."
Her eyes sharpened.
"Isn’t he the child from last night’s ritual?"
Alythess took another careful look.
"That’s probably him. The facial structure matches."
The previous night, they’d been too busy laughing at Locke to pay much attention to anything else. They had only glanced at Danny and his mother in passing.
Now that they had a clear photograph, the resemblance finally clicked.
"That’s exactly who he is."
Evenson took the photograph back.
He folded it in half, leaving only the image of the woman visible.
"His name is Danny. He’s the Son of the Devil."
The joking atmosphere faded.
"But I’ve already absorbed the power inside him, so he isn’t particularly useful to us anymore."
Evenson’s finger tapped the photograph.
"But his mother is different."
His expression became serious.
"I’ve tested her physiology. She has an exceptionally high tolerance for magical energy, including fel energy."
He looked at the photograph.
"That ability is the reason she was able to successfully give birth to the Son of the Devil in the first place."
Evenson folded the photograph again.
"So she’s extremely important to the company’s future development."
"That part is easy."
Alythess’s lips curled into a smile.
"A single mother and her child with nowhere else to go?"
She waved a hand dismissively.
"Getting them into the company will be effortless. One recruitment advertisement should be enough."
