He had admitted it.

He’d actually admitted it.

Clea’s eyes grew wet as she stared at Evenson in disbelief. Pain, disappointment, and grief flooded through her all at once, leaving her slightly dizzy and short of breath.

She took a slow breath.

Then another step backward.

Her trembling finger pointed toward the door.

"Get out."

Evenson didn’t move.

Instead, he stepped closer and reached for her arm.

Clea knocked his hand away.

"Please," Evenson said helplessly. "Just listen to me."

"Get out!"

Clea finally broke.

It was the first time she’d ever screamed at Evenson like that.

"Everything was a lie!"

Her voice cracked.

"Your feelings for me were a lie! What exactly are you trying to explain now?!"

She had spent all this time hoping the Eredar Twins had been lying.

Hoping their words had been nothing more than malicious provocation born from jealousy.

That was why she hadn’t truly been angry before. She’d even retaliated with a childish prank instead.

She had hoped Evenson would deny everything.

Instead, he’d admitted it.

Which meant their relationship...

Had it all been fake?

Had she really been nothing more than a replacement for the missing piece of his soul, exactly as those two demons had claimed?

"You once told me there was nothing false between us."

Evenson grabbed her by the shoulders.

Clea struggled for a moment.

Then stopped.

Her head lowered, and two quiet sobs escaped her.

"I said those words to you before, and I’ll say them again now."

Evenson’s voice was firm.

"There is nothing false about what I feel for you."

"But you admitted they were right!"

Clea raised her head.

Tears streaked her cheeks.

"So what?"

Evenson shook her gently.

"Isn’t that how love works? Two people are drawn to each other."

He paused.

"Looks. Taste. A sense of humor. Even physical attraction."

As he said that, his eyes instinctively dropped toward her chest.

Clea noticed.

She glanced down at herself.

Of course, she couldn’t even see her own toes from that angle.

Evenson immediately looked somewhere else.

"Obviously, there are also things like character, morality, and what’s beautiful on the inside."

He cleared his throat.

"So what’s strange about what happened with us?"

He straightened, doing his best to recover a serious expression.

"Those are the things ordinary people use to find someone they’re attracted to. But we’re not ordinary people."

"We can sense the qualities of someone’s soul."

"So if we found something in each other’s souls that attracted us, why would that be strange?"

He spread his hands.

"People already call someone shallow for judging another person by their appearance."

"We skipped the shallow part entirely and went straight to the soul."

He nodded solemnly.

"If anything, that’s the most profound attraction imaginable."

"Maybe..."

Clea’s anger began to fade.

She couldn’t deny that his argument made some sense.

Ordinary people considered appearance, personality, and values when choosing a partner.

If supernatural beings could perceive the soul itself, why wouldn’t that become part of attraction too?

But just as she began to accept that reasoning, suspicion returned.

She looked at Evenson.

He stared back with an almost suspiciously innocent expression.

Clea put one hand on her hip.

Then she shifted her upper body slightly.

The movement sent a very obvious ripple through her chest.

Evenson never saw it coming.

His vision blurred.

He staggered backward, covered his eyes, and caught himself against the wall.

"Clea..."

He sounded wounded.

"You’re learning bad habits."

"Hmph."

Clea folded her arms.

"You seem considerably more shallow than your speech suggested."

Evenson finally recovered.

"The body and soul are one."

He straightened.

"Appreciating either has nothing to do with being shallow or profound."

He silently cursed his own lack of resistance.

He was never going to develop an immunity to that particular attack.

Still, there was something comforting about it.

Clea was teasing him again.

That meant she’d probably forgiven him.

At least a little.

"I told you there was nothing false between us."

Evenson pulled her into his arms.

"But you need to understand something, Clea."

He held her close.

"Love isn’t defined by how easily it begins. And something you abandon at the first obstacle was never truly worth calling love."

He paused.

"Staying together means having the courage to face every challenge that comes our way."

While Clea couldn’t see what he was doing, Evenson quickly slipped a small piece of paper from his sleeve, glanced at it, and continued with a solemnity he absolutely had not generated on his own.

"We have to be willing to face everything together."

"Evenson..."

Clea’s voice trembled with tears.

She wrapped her arms tightly around him.

Evenson finally exhaled.

He’d done it.

He’d managed to talk her down.

And while he had certainly been embellishing things, none of what he’d said was actually a lie.

Yes, when they’d first met, the strange connection between their souls had been what drew his attention to Clea.

There had also been another contributing factor.

A certain pair of physical features that had made it rather difficult for Clea to see her own feet.

But that had only been the beginning.

What truly mattered was everything that came afterward.

The time they’d spent together.

Those brief days of ordinary life.

During that period, Evenson had genuinely been happy.

That was where the roots of his feelings had taken hold.

"It’s my fault."

Evenson continued before the moment could slip away.

"My actions made you doubt me."

He tightened his arms around her.

"I was wrong to put you through this. I’m truly sorry."

There was genuine remorse behind those words.

Evenson knew perfectly well that his terrible handling of their relationship had created this mess.

That part really was his fault.

But Warlocks had always possessed one admirable quality.

They were exceptionally good at refusing to learn from their mistakes.

If I’ve already made the mistake, I might as well commit to it.

"Maybe..."

Clea’s eyebrows rose and fell uncertainly.

"Maybe I played a part in this too. I don’t trust you enough sometimes."

She looked up at him.

"We keep forgetting that neither of us is normal."

Then she pursed her lips.

"But..."

Her expression became curious.

"What qualities of those two demons attracted you?"

She traced a small circle on the back of Evenson’s hand with one finger.

"If you like that cold, domineering queen type..."

She smiled faintly.

"I can learn."

"And if that’s something you need..."

"I suppose I wouldn’t mind indulging you."

"No."

Evenson immediately raised both hands.

"Absolutely not."

Please. Just let me survive the relationship I already have.

Clea touched her lips thoughtfully.

"Then maybe..."

Her eyes widened.

"Was it their horns and hooves?"

She tilted her head.

"Did you secretly have a thing for demon girls?"

Sometimes a woman’s intuition was terrifyingly accurate.

Or perhaps Clea had simply watched too much anime.

Either way, she’d landed remarkably close to the truth.

Evenson pressed his lips together.

His expression became awkward.

"Maybe..."

He sighed.

"Yeah. That might have been part of it."
