People said money made men go bad.
Apparently, Evenson didn’t even need the money.
That was precisely why Clea thought she needed to keep a close eye on him.
The previous night, she’d been planning to visit Evenson with a sincere desire to discuss some serious academic questions. She’d been looking forward to a productive exchange of magical knowledge.
But the man hadn’t even been home.
Worse, he’d stayed out all night.
Clea had spent the entire evening simmering in annoyance.
Then, early the next morning, the police showed up.
Then SHIELD.
And once everyone else had finally left, Melinda May stayed behind.
Just the two of them.
Alone.
Clea immediately became suspicious.
They had history, after all.
So she’d wasted no time putting her newly learned Kilrogg’s Eye to work.
She’d watched.
And watched.
At first, Evenson and May had discussed nothing but official business. Later, they’d moved on to the next stage of May’s physical enhancement.
Perfectly innocent.
Probably.
The problem was what happened after the enhancement.
What if May suddenly realized how considerate Evenson had been?
What if she decided she owed him a proper thank-you?
Clea wasn’t about to take that chance.
So the surveillance continued.
And completely unexpectedly, she discovered something far more interesting.
Evenson had landed himself another lucrative contract.
Clea sat in her own shop with a pen between her fingers, occasionally biting the end while she scribbled numbers into a small notebook.
"This much for his cigarettes. This much for his alcohol..."
She added another figure.
"Food, clothing, daily expenses, spending money..."
After carefully calculating everything, Clea finally closed the notebook with a satisfied smile.
There.
Perfectly organized.
"What?"
She looked around defensively, as though someone had accused her of something.
"I may be strict about money, but it’s not like I’m stealing it for myself. I’m managing the household budget responsibly. I’m preventing Evenson from wasting money. That’s called being responsible."
She basked in her own virtue for a few moments.
Then she looked at the remaining amount.
There was quite a lot left.
"All right. We’ll save the rest."
She paused.
Then frowned.
"Wait."
"What are we saving it for?"
Clea rested her chin in one hand.
She’d been so focused on saving money that she’d never actually considered the purpose of saving it.
A house?
She and Evenson already each had one.
Both were storefront properties in good locations.
Under normal circumstances...
And she emphasized normal circumstances...
their businesses should have been doing quite well.
A car?
Evenson already had one.
And not just any car. His was apparently one of a kind in the entire world. If he put it up for auction, it might fetch more than a Lamborghini.
So they didn’t need a house.
They didn’t need a car.
Were they supposed to buy a motor home next?
Clea’s eyes suddenly lit up.
Wait.
Saving money was old-fashioned.
Investing was where the real money was.
Make money with money.
That was the sensible approach.
She immediately opened her computer and began searching for promising stocks.
"Hmph. Anything is fine as long as it isn’t Umbrella."
Clea still remembered that the company run by the Eredar twins was called Umbrella.
She never stopped to consider whether a company with that name could actually be found in the market.
She simply wasn’t thinking in that direction.
"Oh?"
Her eyes landed on another company.
"This one looks promising."
She studied the information.
"A medical equipment company. Healthcare companies make good money, don’t they?"
Then she noticed the logo.
Half a fig leaf.
Her eyes brightened.
"And that logo is wonderful."
She pointed at the screen.
"I like this company."
A decision was made.
Clea invested.
The company was called Evangelion.
Elsewhere, Evenson had just finished negotiating with Pepper.
He immediately headed for the basement.
May was still waiting down there.
But the moment he opened the door and saw what was happening, his heart nearly stopped.
May was sitting on top of one of the rosewood chests.
She rested her cheek against one hand while lazily tapping the other chest with her free hand.
Evenson’s face twitched.
Lady, do you have any idea what you’re sitting on?
He cleared his throat.
"Ahem."
May looked up.
"Why are you sitting on that?"
"There aren’t any chairs down here."
She stood and stretched casually.
"Where else was I supposed to sit?"
Then she glanced back at the two chests.
"Actually... I don’t remember seeing these last time I was here."
Her eyes narrowed.
"What’s inside?"
"New equipment."
Evenson quietly walked over and moved the chests into the corner.
"As for what’s inside... you didn’t open them?"
"No."
May gave him an unimpressed look.
"Opening someone else’s belongings without permission is rude. I respect people’s privacy."
Evenson nearly sagged with relief.
"Really? There’s such a thing as privacy around an intelligence agent?"
"At work?"
May shrugged.
"An agent doesn’t have much use for other people’s privacy."
She glanced at him.
"But when I’m off duty, I’m not going around opening people’s belongings."
Her eyes returned to the chests.
"Especially not yours."
She paused.
"Who would be stupid enough to open one of your boxes?"
Evenson swallowed.
"I wouldn’t recommend it."
"Because of what’s inside?"
"Because you’re enhanced, you wouldn’t die."
He positioned both chests against the wall and threw a cloth over them.
"But you’d definitely lose half your life."
May stared at the covered chests.
That only made her more curious.
"So what’s inside?"
"Hm."
Evenson smiled.
"Guess."
"Forget it."
May rolled her eyes.
It was obvious he had no intention of telling her.
"Whatever. It’s not like opening the box will reveal a crate full of oranges."
Evenson froze.
"Wait."
He slowly turned toward her.
"Boxes can contain oranges?"
May stared at him.
"Never mind."
Evenson waved the question away and headed toward another corner of the basement.
After rummaging through the clutter for a while, he finally emerged carrying a pressure cooker.
He blew dust from the lid.
Then wiped it down.
"You remember the procedure, so let’s get started."
He set the cooker down.
"I want to get to Tony Stark’s place before midnight."
If he was being paid by the day, arriving before midnight should still count as a full day.
May watched him prepare everything.
Her eyelid twitched.
"Is that... the same pot from last time?"
She looked genuinely concerned.
"It’s been more than a month. Are you sure whatever’s in there hasn’t gone bad?"
"Of course not."
Evenson answered with absolute confidence.
He’d never heard of fel energy spoiling.
May sighed.
"Fine."
She stepped forward and took a cup of the fel-infused water.
She stared at it for a moment.
The pain from her first transformation was still burned into her memory.
But after a brief hesitation, she gritted her teeth and drank.
"Mm..."
Her body tensed.
"Agh...!"
A muffled groan escaped her.
The pain came in waves.
Eventually, May braced herself against the table, breathing heavily.
"Seems..."
She took another breath.
"Seems like it didn’t hurt as much as last time."
"Of course."
Evenson put the lid back on the pressure cooker and returned it to its place.
"That was your first time."
He said it matter-of-factly.
"First times usually hurt more."
May slowly turned her head toward him.
"As the transformation progresses and your body adapts, the pain will gradually decrease."
Evenson smiled.
"Eventually, you might even find it pleasant."
May stared at him.
Her expression became increasingly strange.
After several seconds, she finally spoke.
"Do you ever listen to yourself?"
"What?"
"Sometimes... don’t you think you sound like someone who deserves to be punched?"
Evenson tilted his head.
He ignored the insult completely.
"Right. One more thing."
May sighed.
"Ask the Director to give me medical leave for a while."
He waved a hand.
"I don’t want anyone bothering me with work during this period."
"You get sick?"
May couldn’t help laughing.
"What kind of illness?"
Evenson thought about it.
"Occupational anxiety."
May waited.
He continued with complete seriousness.
"The kind you get after spending your own fortune treating other people."
