Fury’s objection was a reasonable one.

When the Second World War ended, the Allies captured thousands of Nazi officials, including members of the highest leadership. Even Heinrich Himmler had fallen into Allied hands before taking his own life, and during his brief captivity he had revealed a considerable amount of information.

If the Umbrella organization truly originated during that period, how could no trace of it have surfaced?

Perhaps the Allies had uncovered it and buried the information to preserve morale or maintain postwar stability. That was conceivable.

But S.H.I.E.L.D. should have inherited records of something that significant.

Instead...

There was nothing.

Not in Fury’s own knowledge.

Not in any of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s oldest archives.

That silence was difficult to explain.

Evenson answered without the slightest hesitation.

"The people who surrendered and cooperated were never the ones Hitler trusted most."

"They may have held rank."

"They may have wielded authority."

"But they weren’t entrusted with his deepest contingency plans."

Inside, Evenson couldn’t help admiring how convenient history could be.

Everyone involved was long dead.

There was no one left to contradict him.

Short of dragging them back from the grave, his audience had no way to prove otherwise.

"As for Himmler..."

Evenson continued calmly.

"He probably knew."

"But he was loyal to the ideology, even if he wasn’t always loyal to Hitler himself."

Coulson frowned.

"That doesn’t match everything we know."

"We have solid evidence that Himmler eventually betrayed Hitler."

"He even considered replacing him."

Evenson shot him a look.

Really?

You had to make me invent another explanation?

He sighed.

"Is Nazism the same thing as Hitler?"

"No."

"Hitler created the movement."

"He didn’t become the movement."

"Ideologies outlive the people who found them."

"Himmler could betray Hitler."

"That doesn’t mean he betrayed the ideals he believed in."

Silence followed.

The logic was unsettling...

But internally consistent.

Fury found himself recalling Himmler’s final years.

The man had remained fanatically devoted to his vision even as Germany collapsed. Projects like the infamous Lebensborn program were proof enough that his commitment extended far beyond loyalty to a single leader.

In other words...

Those willing to talk hadn’t known the plan.

Those who knew the plan had never intended to reveal it.

A frustratingly convenient explanation.

Fury decided not to waste any more time debating history.

"What about your source?"

"Did he identify where this new organization went into hiding?"

If they had escaped once...

S.H.I.E.L.D. could still find them now.

Not if.

When.

Evenson shook his head.

"No."

"Hitler respected him greatly, but he was never formally part of the organization."

"He only learned fragments."

Fury’s shoulders lowered slightly.

Then Evenson smiled.

"That said..."

"He did make a few educated guesses."

Fury leaned forward again.

"What guesses?"

"Three possible locations."

"The first..."

"Beneath the Antarctic ice."

"The second..."

"Somewhere inside one of the Pacific Ocean’s deepest trenches."

He paused deliberately.

"And the third..."

His smile widened.

"...On the far side of the Moon."

No one spoke.

Finally, Fury broke the silence.

"...The Moon?"

"In 1945?"

The first two locations were at least conceivable.

Remote.

Hidden.

Difficult to reach.

The third was something else entirely.

The United States took enormous pride in being the first nation to land astronauts on the Moon.

Now Evenson was calmly suggesting the Nazis might have established a secret base there decades earlier.

It sounded like science fiction.

Evenson merely shrugged.

"I don’t think it’s impossible."

"The Germans invented the first practical long-range rockets."

"Their original vision wasn’t merely warfare."

"It was spaceflight."

"The V-2 happened to become a weapon."

"With unlimited funding..."

"No regard for casualties..."

"And enough desperation..."

"It’s entirely possible they advanced much farther than history records."

Fury slowly rubbed his chin.

The implications were staggering.

Antarctica.

The Pacific abyss.

The far side of the Moon.

None of those locations would be easy to investigate.

And all three were merely educated guesses made by a man Fury had never met.

After a long silence, he asked,

"Can you still contact this... colleague of yours?"

"I’d like to hear his account directly."

"No."

Evenson’s answer came instantly.

"He’s dead."

That was the safest response.

You couldn’t introduce a fictional informant and then allow someone to insist on meeting him.

Natasha tilted her head.

"I would’ve expected a wizard to live much longer."

"He did."

Evenson nodded.

"He was a hundred and seventy years old."

"He was eventually killed..."

"...by white wizards."

"White wizards?" Coulson echoed.

"A sanctimonious bunch."

Evenson’s expression immediately soured.

"They consider themselves the guardians of justice."

"They hide away from the world."

"They judge everyone by their own standards."

"And if they decide you’re too dangerous..."

"They eliminate you."

"They’re insufferably self-righteous."

He wasn’t entirely making that part up.

Living under the Ancient One’s watchful eye had made him feel like he was constantly committing crimes simply by existing.

Fury considered the description carefully.

"If they’re really like that..."

"They do sound troublesome."

He didn’t fully accept Evenson’s biased account.

Anyone describing an enemy was bound to exaggerate.

Still...

The possibility was worth remembering.

Fury exchanged a glance with Coulson and Natasha.

The Umbrella discussion had already yielded more information than anyone expected.

Whether any of it proved true would require months, perhaps years, of investigation.

There was no point pursuing it further today.

"Let’s move on."

He folded his hands.

"Mr. Richter."

"Would you be willing to join S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

Evenson blinked.

"I thought we’d already settled this."

"I’m not becoming one of your agents."

"I’m not talking about field service."

Fury shook his head.

"I’m proposing something different."

"You remain independent."

"You live your own life."

"But whenever S.H.I.E.L.D. encounters a problem involving the supernatural..."

"We call."

"You help."

"And in return..."

"We pay you."

"The salary is quite generous."

Evenson’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully.

"So..."

"A part-time job?"

Fury smiled faintly.

"I prefer the title..."

"Consultant."
