Chapter 55: Chapter 55: An Urge to Dissect

He Luanchuan lay in the medic’s arms, his eyes peacefully closed. Seeing him like this, Feng He let out a sigh of relief.

The protective shield had been taken down. Feng He walked over to the mutant beasts that had been killed by the spiritual power attack, squatting down to examine them closely.

These mutant beasts were very thin, not at all like the ones they had seen on the battlefield before.

"You two, help me lift it up," Feng He said, directing two soldiers standing nearby.

After a moment’s hesitation, the two soldiers complied. Once they had propped up the mutant beast, Feng He activated her Star Ring and began to record everything in front of her.

She reached out and squeezed the mutant beast’s hand, finding the texture completely different. Feng He couldn’t believe it.

She squeezed it a few more times and realized it was true.

The Steel Beasts on the battlefield were incredibly hard on the outside, ice-cold to the touch. Not only that, but their bodies were also covered in scales.

But this mutant beast in front of her, while it looked very much like a Steel Beast, had no hard scales. Its texture to the touch was... human.

It was also tall and thin, much like the white mutant beast that had been directing the battle.

Yet, it lacked the white mutant beast’s basic characteristics.

Strange.

Very strange.

Feng He pulled her hand back, rubbing her right thumb and forefinger together, feeling the warm sensation that lingered. Her eyes slowly darkened.

’If only I had a scalpel here,’ she thought. ’I’d dissect it on the spot.’

’That way, I’d know if it’s human or beast.’

Thinking this, she decided to act on it.

She turned her head and called out, "Medic, come over here for a moment."

The medic who was called immediately set He Luanchuan down and walked over. "What is it?" he asked.

"You have a Space Ring, don’t you?" Feng He’s words were a question, but her gaze was fixed on his hand.

"I do."

"Good. Help me take this corpse back. Bring two more as well."

Hearing Feng He’s request, the medic wanted to refuse, but after seeing her expressionless face, he could only agree.

After storing three corpses in his Space Ring, he looked at Feng He and asked, "What do you need these mutant beast corpses for?"

"Research," Feng He replied.

The medic fell silent, the look in his eyes changing as he watched her.

’This woman’s medical skills must be excellent.’

’I’ll have to exchange notes with her later.’

He Luanchuan was still unconscious. They couldn’t advance recklessly, so they could only sit down and rest where they were, waiting for him to wake up before they could move on.

During this time, Feng He kept trying to send messages to the other four, hoping for a response.

Seeing this, the medic sat down next to her and said, "There’s a signal jammer in here. Unless you have a specially made Star Ring, no one can be contacted."

"So none of the messages you’re sending are getting through."

After giving her the warning, his gaze fell upon her, and he asked casually, "Which department did you come from? I don’t think I’ve seen you before."

"Also, my name is Lin Ye. What’s yours?"

Without looking up, Feng He continued to stare at the blue screen in front of her and replied casually, "Mm, thanks for the heads-up."

"My name is Feng He."

Lin Ye repeated her name, a smile appearing on his handsome face. He turned his head to look at her and continued to ask, "So which department were you in before?"

"I’m currently in the Logistics Department," Feng He said, then looked up at him with a faint smile. "My spiritual power is Grade D."

Hearing she was Grade D in spiritual power, Lin Ye’s mouth fell slightly open. But everything she did was perfectly in line with a doctor’s behavior.

And yet, she worked in the Logistics Department.

"Well, you’re pretty amazing then," Lin Ye said, but inwardly he was thinking, ’My medical skills are actually worse than a cook’s. This won’t do. I have to study harder when I get back.’

’I have to make the difficult problem of spiritual power depletion easy to solve.’

The two of them sat together in silence. When it was time to eat, Lin Ye took out a bottle of Nutrient Liquid and handed it to her, saying, "Time to eat."

Taking the Nutrient Liquid from him, Feng He gave a simple word of thanks before opening the bottle and drinking.

As he drank the Nutrient Liquid, Lin Ye was suddenly nostalgic for the limited-quantity meals from the cafeteria. Every time, he’d have to rush over, afraid he wouldn’t get any.

After he finished drinking, it dawned on Lin Ye that Feng He was from the Logistics Department.

’Does that mean she’s the one who makes those limited-quantity meals in the cafeteria?’

At this thought, Lin Ye asked, "Are you the one who makes the limited-quantity meals in the cafeteria?"

"Yes. To be precise, five of us in the Logistics Department make it together, with Captain Li supervising," Feng He replied.

"Oh, so there are five people in the Logistics Department," Lin Ye said with a look of sudden realization. He’d heard from others that the department was empty, with only Captain Li left.

’The food the robots made wasn’t good at all.’

’I can’t believe they actually managed to recruit five people during today’s enlistment drive.’

Feng He paid him no more mind and took out the novel she hadn’t finished to continue reading.

Because of the special training, her time for reading novels had been drastically reduced.

The two returned to a peaceful silence. In this vast, empty space, the only sound was the hushed whispers of the others.

After being unconscious for two hours, He Luanchuan slowly began to wake up. He sat up from the ground, looking around before glancing down at his own hands.

He muttered, "My head actually doesn’t hurt anymore."

"How strange."

’Who on earth played that song?’ he wondered. ’After listening to it, my splitting headache gradually subsided.’

Not only that, but his spiritual power was also slowly recovering. Although the speed wasn’t very fast, it was still a bit faster than when it was usually depleted.

"Captain, you’re awake!" A soldier saw him and immediately ran over, shouting happily.

"Yes. What time is it?" He Luanchuan nodded and then asked.

"It’s already twelve o’clock."

’Twelve o’clock already? Time really flies.’

Just as He Luanchuan stood up, the reinforcements arrived.

"Captain He!" The leader of the arriving reinforcements immediately saluted He Luanchuan upon seeing him, then reported the current situation. "Captain Gu has already led his men down another fork in the road. Admiral He has relayed the situation here back to headquarters, and Chief Bei is taking it very seriously."

"She has already dispatched more people."

Hearing this, He Luanchuan nodded. "Then let’s continue moving forward."

"Yes, sir!"

The team was to advance. Everyone got up and set off.

Feng He walked in the middle of the formation, surrounded by people on all sides. Even if a mutant beast suddenly jumped out, she would be safe.

Feng He observed her surroundings. The deeper they went, the more sinister it felt.

’Is it because no sunlight has reached this place for years, making it dark, damp, and filled with the stench of blood?’
