When Lin Xuan and Liu Xin went inside, they saw the corpses piled to one side, a mangled mess of flesh and blood with not a single body left intact. The villagers had been driven into a killing frenzy, and only now were they gradually calming down. They began to clutch their heads and sob uncontrollably.
It had been far too long. They were finally free from the clutches of these Demons, allowing them to finally vent their anguish. The women who had been violated, in particular, clung to one another and sobbed, unable to stop. For a time, the air was filled with the sound of their cries.
Standing nearby, Liu Xin couldn’t stop the tears from streaming down her face, and the rims of her eyes turned bright red.
’It’s over. It’s all over.’ Lin Xuan’s heart felt heavy as well. He might not be some kind of do-gooder, but he would always step in to help when he encountered a situation like this.
After they composed themselves, they all knelt and kowtowed to Lin Xuan. Lin Xuan accepted their prostration. To refuse would have been a form of insult, and they were determined to do it. This was the only way they could express the depth of their gratitude.
Immediately after, they began to collect the spoils from the fortress. With the leaders all dead, there was no point in leaving anything behind. Besides, most of it was their own hard-earned money!
After gathering everything, they ended up with a small pile of items: various Elixir Pills and Primordial Stones, along with some Weapons and Martial Arts manuals. However, these were all subpar items. After all, what kind of treasures could one expect to find in a place like this?
After bringing everything out, the villagers laid it all down, untouched. They had brought it out for Lin Xuan, not to take for themselves. They wished they could offer him more, but this was all they had. In a sense, none of this was meant as his reward.
The most they could give Lin Xuan was their prostration; they had no other form of payment.
"All this..." Just as Lin Xuan was about to refuse, his eyes fell upon a black box. He couldn’t tell what kind of wood it was made of, but its surface was a glossy, jet-black, and carved with intricate patterns that made it look quite beautiful.
It instantly captured his attention. He picked it up and examined it, and upon opening it, he found a Treasure Pearl resting inside. It appeared completely transparent, but when he held it up toward the sky, he could see a faint green light swirling within, as if it were filled with a green liquid.
Although he didn’t know what it was, he knew it was definitely valuable. He couldn’t sense the slightest trace of Elemental Power from it, which told him it certainly wasn’t a Primordial Stone. Yet, it didn’t quite look like a Luminous Pearl, either.
"Do any of you know what this is?" Lin Xuan asked.
The villagers shook their heads, indicating they had no idea. ’That makes sense,’ Lin Xuan thought. ’How would they know? This is a treasure, something only the Mao Brothers would have known about. To think they actually possessed something of value.’
He immediately put the box away and said to the villagers, "You should all take these things back. Anything you don’t need, you can sell for Primordial Stones to help support your families."
The moment he said this, the villagers looked alarmed and hurriedly waved their hands in protest. "We don’t need it! It all belongs to you, Benefactor!" Of course, it wasn’t that they didn’t want it. Who wouldn’t want a better life for their family? The value of everything here added up to at least 10,000 Primordial Stones—it was a massive fortune.
To Lin Xuan, however, it meant little. He couldn’t be called fabulously wealthy, but he was at least well-off.
"I really don’t need it. Just take it back and use it. Besides, all of this was plundered from you to begin with. Think of it as being returned to its rightful owners. I don’t need any reward," Lin Xuan said with a smile. "If you all refuse to take it, I’ll just leave it here for anyone to claim."
The villagers exchanged glances. Since Lin Xuan had put it that way, their only choice was to divide the fortune amongst themselves, ensuring everyone got an equal share. Once everything was settled, they bid farewell to Lin Xuan and went their separate ways.
The captives were not only from Liu Xin’s village but had also been abducted from other nearby settlements. After all, her village wasn’t the only one in the area.
Once they had packed up, they returned to the village together. When they arrived, a crowd was already waiting anxiously. Upon seeing the returning party, the waiting villagers stared in disbelief before surging forward to embrace their loved ones, weeping.
In an instant, a wave of joyful tears swept through the village.
As it was already getting late, Lin Xuan decided to stay the night. That evening, he was treated like a guest of honor. The villagers brought out their best food and drink and even started a bonfire party. Everyone celebrated, and feeling the joyous atmosphere, Lin Xuan’s heart grew warm.
’Perhaps they’re just ordinary people without powerful Cultivation, but they can still live happy and fulfilling lives.’
Liu Yue’Er played happily with everyone. The villagers were all very fond of her, and the thought that she would be leaving the next day made them sad to see her go.
The night passed in the blink of an eye. Early the next morning, it was time for them to get on the road. They didn’t pack much, and soon Liu Xin and Liu Yue’Er were setting off with Lin Xuan in a horse-drawn carriage. The carriage was one they had taken from the fortress, and it was perfect for the journey.
"What’s wrong? Sad to leave?"
Lin Xuan couldn’t help but ask as he watched Liu Xin gaze continually out the carriage window toward the village. Liu Yue’Er, in contrast, had fallen asleep in his lap without a hint of sadness. For her, just being with Lin Xuan and Liu Xin was enough.
"A little... but now that I’ve decided to pursue Cultivation, I won’t have any regrets!" Liu Xin turned back, her clear eyes filled with resolve.
Her resolute gaze startled him for a moment, as if he were seeing a reflection of his past self. He, too, may have lacked innate talent, but he had carved a bloody path for himself through sheer hard work and determination.
He shook his head and smiled, then retrieved the incomplete Celestial Level Martial Arts manual from his Storage Space. It was the one Sun Zhe had lost to him. The title on the cover read: Jade Heart Technique.
He didn’t practice this Martial Art himself. For one, it was incomplete. More importantly, it wasn’t suitable for him, as this particular Martial Art was designed exclusively for women. It was, however, a perfect fit for Liu Xin’s Cultivation.
"I’m giving this Celestial Level Martial Arts manual to you. I hope you will practice it diligently. This is the most I can do to help." Lin Xuan handed it to her and added sternly, "You must keep this safe and never let anyone know you have it. Otherwise, it will bring a fatal disaster upon you!"
Liu Xin took it and clutched it tightly to her chest, her eyes turning red. "I will keep it safe!" She held it as if it were a precious treasure that she would never let go of.
Lin Xuan said no more. He simply hoped she would be able to climb to greater heights. Most Cultivators didn’t begin with Celestial Level Martial Arts, yet she was. She might not become exceptionally prominent, but her starting point was already far higher than that of most people.
