Chapter 52: Crucible
The Vault of Floor 1-4 was a colossal, amphitheater-like cavern completely removed from the cramped corridors they had left behind. The scale of the chamber was immense, dwarfing their silhouettes against the architecture of the dungeon array. The high dome of obsidian stone swallowed the ambient glow of the cavern, but the floor beneath their boots was a perfectly smooth, mirror-like sheet of ancient glacier ice that reflected the dim, flickering magical lighting like a frozen lake. Every step echoed with a hollow, metallic resonance that traveled up their spines.
In the exact center of this icy arena stood a monolithic steel structure—the System Repository—a towering column of dark machinery, exposed hydraulic lines, and copper piping that hummed with a low-frequency power grid ripple. The steady vibration rattled the loose frost on the nearby pillars. Guarding the heavy, locked data terminal was the guardian of the vault.
It was twice the size of a normal grown man, a terrifying automaton clad from head to toe in rusted medieval armor plate reinforced with thick rivet lines and crude welding marks. Unlike the fragile mining robots from the earlier floors of the glacier biome, this machine was built solely for high-density war and sector pacification. Its glowing blue optical visor slowly scanned the perimeter with a cold, analytical cadence, and in its right hand, it held a massive, broad-headed greatsword that crackled continuously with violent, erratic arcs of blue electricity. The weapon was so heavy it left a deep groove in the ice just by resting there.
The system interface snapped into their vision with an aggressive flash of crimson text, overriding their standard layout:
[BOSS ENGAGED: ELITE GRAND KNIGHT]
"Sky," Vesper said softly, her custom enchanted boots effortlessly finding perfect purchase on the smooth, low-friction surface.
"The primary energy veins Chloe warned us about are running explicitly along its upper shoulder joints. Do you see the glowing blue conduits beneath the pauldrons?" "Yeah, I have them mapped," Sky said, raising his left arm to steady the chassis of his new Repeating Crossbow against his chest. He kept his focus sharp, checking the alignment of the crimson laser dot as it danced across the rusted metal plates. "Chloe said the thing feeds entirely on the atmosphere energy. If you hit its heavy front shields or chest plate directly, the concussive shockwave just heals its internal core matrix and resets its defensive posture. I have to systematically sever those glowing lines from behind while you keep its eyes locked on you. Don’t let it turn its torso."
"Then I shall give it absolutely nothing else to look at," Vesper declared, her voice cold, flat, and completely devoid of human fear.
With a sudden burst of speed that defied the slippery terrain, Vesper charged directly across the arena, her white robes snapping behind her like a banner. Her newly evolved Sacred Light-Saber flared to life with a blinding, sun-like brilliance, cutting through the shadows and illuminating every dark corner of the cavern.
The Grand Knight automaton whirred loudly to life, its internal gears grinding together with a deafening mechanical roar as its blue optical visor instantly flashed an aggressive, hostile crimson. The sudden change filled the arena with a bloody tint. It raised its crackling electric greatsword with terrifying speed, matching her movement and meeting her strike halfway across the ice with a swing that could have crushed a boulder.
CRASH!
The violent collision echoed through the cavern like a localized thunderclap, vibrating the stone walls and sending a shower of bright orange sparks into the air. A massive shockwave of white kinetic light and blue electricity rippled outward from the point of contact, fracturing the ancient glacier floor beneath their boots into web-like lines.
Vesper’s knees buckled slightly under the sheer, brutal weight of the boss’s down-swing, the force pressing her down toward the slick ice. But she gritted her teeth, instantly channeling her Holy Prayer attribute inward to force her physical defensive stats past their baseline limits, her light-saber flaring with renewed intensity to push back against the crushing pressure.
"Now, Skies!" she shouted through her teeth, her glowing blade holding the line against the giant’s electric weapon as the two forces ground against each other in a stalemate of raw power.
Sky didn’t need to be told twice. He sprinted into a wide flank, his boots digging into the fractured patches of ice to find leverage. But his eyes weren’t just on the giant robot before him. His [Danger Sense]was still prickling at the back of his neck, a slow, insistent itch reminding him that Colton was somewhere in the room, cloaked in stealth, waiting for this exact moment of maximum vulnerability. Sky kept his movements erratic and unpredictable, using his movement speed buff from memory to glide across the ice while keeping his crossbow leveled at the Grand Knight’s exposed shoulder matrix. He refused to give the hidden tracker a clean trajectory for a backstab.
He squeezed the trigger, unleashing a rapid burst of steel-tipped projectiles directly toward the pulsing blue conduits on the machine’s left side.
Thwip-thwip-thwip!
The bolts cut through the white steam generated by Vesper’s light, tracking the target accurately through the swirling fog. The first two projectiles shattered the defensive iron casing over the automaton’s joint, exposing the delicate wiring underneath, while the third severed the primary mana line with a violent spray of blue sparks and leaking coolant. The Grand Knight let out a loud, mechanical groan as its power levels suddenly fluctuated, its giant greatsword losing half of its electrical current and dropping in velocity.
[BOSS MANA VEIN SEVERED: INTERNAL REGEN THROTTLED BY 25%]
"One down," Sky muttered under his breath, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter as he prepared to chain his next movement across the arena.
He could feel the air shifting behind him—a subtle, cold vibration in the fog that didn’t belong to the boss or the environment. It was the distinct displacement of mass that occurred when a cloaked player moved too quickly through a dense atmospheric zone. Colton was repositioning, creeping closer to the center of the fray as the giant sentinel’s guard began to slip, greedy for the final strike. Sky tightened his grip on his Blood Blade, his heart rate remaining entirely flat as he prepared to play the next hand in this high-stakes game of attrition, turning the boss room into a dual-front execution square.
