Chapter 55: The Cost of Treachery
The explosion of electricity and shattered ice was deafening. Colton did not even have the time to activate his defensive shields before the Grand Knight’s colossal blade completely crushed his position, sending a blinding wave of blue current cascading across the entire arena floor. The concussive blast vaporized the surrounding sub-zero water instantly, throwing up a dense, scalding shroud of white steam that clashed violently with the artificial blizzard howling through the vault. The sheer kinetic output of the boss’s ultimate attack fractured the structural code of the sector, sending a violent tremor through the smooth glacier flooring that threatened to unseat Sky from his vantage point. The raw energy of the strike rattled the nearby repository pillars, shaking loose heavy curtains of frost that fell like dust into the boiling vapor below.
When the smoke and ice debris finally began to drift apart, revealing the edge of the dark, steaming chasm, Colton was still barely clinging to life. His heavy Vanguard iron plate armor was completely scorched black, the reinforced metal warped, cracked, and sparking violently with residual high-voltage energy. His lower torso was firmly pinned beneath a heavy slab of fallen glacier ice, trapping his broken avatar in the freezing water. The weight of the ice sheet anchor was relentless, continuously pulling his disabled frame deeper into the black abyss.
Colton could not believe his own eyes as he looked up at Sky, who had materialized out of the shadows with terrifying, ghostly silence. The manic, arrogant pride that the green-haired bully had carried since the initial lobby screenings was completely gone, replaced by the raw, shivering terror of a player facing permanent erasure from the system grid. Opening his mouth in a desperate, bubbling gasp that sprayed red drops across the ice, he began to explicitly beg for his life.
"Please... please help me," Colton wheezed, his bloodshot eyes wide with panic as he watched his user interface metrics flash a critical warning thread. "I won’t do it again... I swear by the Order... just pull me out of the trench! Don’t leave me down here!"
"Do you actually wanna live?" Sky said smoothly, his gravelly, raspy voice carrying a terrifyingly neutral tone that offered no comfort.
He strolled lazily over to the edge of the pit and squatted directly in front of the trapped knight, his dark eyes cold, detached, and entirely dead behind his hood. He balanced himself effortlessly on his heels, his Blood Blade resting loosely over his knee as if he were simply observing a minor environmental anomaly rather than a dying executioner. The crimson light from the boss’s distant weapon cast long, sinister lines across his calm face, painting him as a true phantom of the unmapped sector.
"Yes! Yes, please!" Colton pleaded frantically, his fingers clawing uselessly at the slick, freezing ice as the dark water dragged at his armor plates. "I’ll put in good words for you directly to Arthur! I’ll tell him you saved the raid team! Just let me live... pull me up... please..."
"Hm," Sky murmured, tilting his head slightly as he pretended to consider the transactional mathematics of the offer.
He watched the data lines on Colton’s profile glitching wildly, the system’s security sweeps beginning to scan the irregular damage metrics of the sector. A slow, terrifyingly serene expression settled over the assassin’s features, completely devoid of the panic that usually governed players in the red zone.
"Nah. Having you dead would be a hundred times better for business," Sky smiled, a cold, sharp line that didn’t hold a single trace of human empathy.
"You bastard... you motherfucke—"
Before Colton could vocalize another syllable of his rage, his remaining Armor bar fell violently from four straight down to zero as the secondary electrical feedback loop from the ice floor snapped through his chassis. The final sliver of his health pool vanished instantly into the void. The unfeeling automated array popped up in the center of Sky’s vision, rendering a stark, pale text notification against the darkness:
[PLAYER LOG: VANGUARD LIEUTENANT COLTON HAS DESYNCED (PERMANENT DELETION)]
Sky didn’t waste a single millisecond watching Colton as his physical avatar fully dissolved into a cloud of dark, fragmented pixels that drifted into the sub-zero wind. The hunter had been completely cleared from the grid, his greed serving as his own executioner. The independent rogue had turned the syndicate’s trap into a flawless execution square without taking a single point of damage himself.
While the Grand Knight’s massive electrified broadsword was still deeply buried three meters into the solid glacier ice from the overhead smash, the towering war machine was temporarily locked in its heavy, mechanical recovery animation. Its internal gears whirred and groaned loudly as it struggled to pull the heavy iron blade back out of the deep trench Sky’s crossbow bolts had created. The hydraulic lines along its upper chassis hummed with an overloaded frequency, trying to break the vacuum seal of the ice.
Suddenly, the residual phantom feedback from the massive shockwave caught up to Sky’s fragile status profile. The freezing pressure of the collapsing sector slammed into his chest, making his [Dragon Heart] attribute throb violently in protest. Sky fell heavily to his knees on the slick ice, coughing as he drew a hoarse, ragged breath into his burning lungs. His hands were shaking from the sheer volume of combat adrenaline surging through his thin veins, his stamina bars flashing dangerously low.
He looked down into the empty dark chasm where the bully had just been permanently erased from reality, the bitter, pent-up frustration of their weeks in the Central Sleep Cage spilling out of his throat.
"Die... you arrogant bastard," Sky spat, his voice dropping into a furious, jagged growl that cut through the whistling blizzard. "Die, die, die..."
A wicked, entirely unhinged grin appeared slowly across his face beneath his crimson scarf, his eyes flashing with a predatory triumph that had been buried under weeks of submission to the elite factions. The rigid hierarchy that had suppressed independent players for years meant absolutely nothing in the dark corners of Floor 1-4.
"Die and go keep your pathetic pride, your bloated ego, and your useless vanguard badges company in hell!" Sky snarled, his knuckles white as he clamped his hand around the wire-wrapped hilt of his weapon.
Shaking slightly from the physical fatigue and the fifty percent regeneration throttle dragging at his attributes, he used the jagged surface of a nearby frozen wall to force himself back up to his full height. He looked down at the empty space with a strange, complex mix of raw hatred, triumphant satisfaction, and deep, unadulterated contempt. The monopoly on survival had just lost its lead tracker, and the independent rogue was still breathing.
After a quiet moment of stabilization, he wiped a layer of frost from his face and murmured along the wind: "Don’t want to get involved in your garbage politics doesn’t mean I won’t execute you when you cross my line, you absolute fool."
He snapped his head back toward the center of the amphitheater, his [Danger Sense] mapping out the exact expiration timer on the boss’s recovery state.
"Vesper! The core is exposed! Strike it now!" Sky roared, his voice bouncing off the obsidian dome.
Vesper was already in maximum tactical motion, her calculations concluding the moment Colton’s profile desynced from the server array. She didn’t waste a single word or look back at the abyss. She leaped beautifully off a rising, jagged shard of ice that had been thrown up by the previous explosion, her pristine white robes billowing wildly around her like the grand wings of a vengeful, purging angel. In mid-air, she inverted her two-handed grip on her newly evolved Sacred Light-Saber, the green micro-thin circuitry runes etched along the silver steel screaming with an immense, unrefined torrent of pure kinetic and holy energy.
She drove the blade straight down with the entire descending weight of her body, targeting the exact coordinates Sky had cleared. The silver edge pierced directly into the exposed, unarmored mechanical exhaust vent located at the precise base of the Grand Knight’s neck.
The critical hit landed cleanly, striking the Grand Knight with devastating, pinpoint precision. The towering machine automaton staggered backward violently as the massive armor-piercing [Light-Cleave] impact coursed through its internal power core, leaving its steel frame visibly shaken and uncalibrated. The damage output registered by the array was far greater than absolutely anything the boss had suffered since the battle first began on Floor 1-4. For the very first time in its automated cycle, the Grand Knight’s system program realized that its opponent’s attacks were becoming increasingly dangerous to its structural survival.
The Grand Knight suddenly stiffened, its giant legs locking into the ice with a final, heavy grinding sound. The hostile crimson light flickering within its optical visor blinked rapidly through several flashing error codes before turning completely, silently black. A rapid series of small, internal, muffled mechanical explosions rippled violently through its dense steel torso, sending thick plumes of gray smoke blowing out of its armor joints as the system repository unlocked behind it.
