Chapter 57: The Sovereign’s Patience
The physical and sensory transition from the frozen, broken architecture of the archives back to the Living Room was absolutely deafening.
The usually warm, comforting amber hum of the lodge was completely overshadowed by the immediate, aggressive sound of dozens of men shouting in unison. The very millisecond Sky and Vesper materialized onto the polished hardwood floor, their profiles solidifying out of the swirling extraction portal, a dozen heavily armored Vanguard Knights drew their broadswords in a fluid, militaristic motion. The heavy, echoing clang of drawing steel rang through the high-ceilinged hall, cutting through the domestic normalcy of the tavern and causing the resting independent players to scatter in a sudden panic.
"Stand down! Nobody moves an inch!" A booming, authoritative voice cut cleanly through the brewing chaos, carrying a localized systemic weight that forced the surrounding guards to instantly stiffen into position.
Commander Arthur stepped forward, his massive frame parting the ranks of common-tier Awakened who had gathered around the portal threshold. His seasoned, battle-scarred face was heavily darkened by a volatile mixture of blinding fury and fiercely calculated military restraint. In his massive, gauntleted left hand, he held a glowing tactical data terminal, its interface flashing an aggressive, repeating crimson notification displaying the dead array log and deleted registry profile of Lieutenant Colton.
"You killed him," Arthur growled, his deep voice vibrating the wooden floorboards beneath Sky’s boots.
His golden aura flared violently to life without warning, radiating an intense thermal pressure that caused the nearby stone fireplace flames to dance and flare erratically across the walls. The sheer density of his mana output hung over the room like a physical weight .
"You intentionally lured my lead tracker into a localized environmental hazard and let the Elite Grand Knight completely crush his avatar structural profile," Arthur stated, his knuckles turning white against the edge of his terminal. His sharp, furious eyes swept back and forth between Sky’s masked face and Vesper’s pristine, soot-stained white robes. "Or should I say... you two were the ones who explicitly executed him in the dark?" A massive wave of nervous, hushed murmurs spread instantly through the gathering crowd of onlookers. Faction leaders and independent rogue operators alike leaned in, recognizing that the delicate truce keeping the safe zone stable was resting on a razor’s edge.
"Give me one singular, logical reason why I shouldn’t have my entire frontline legion execute you right where you stand," Arthur’s gaze hardened into flint, his right hand slowly drifting toward the heavy hilt of his weapon.
"Safe-zone treaty be absolutely damned." Sky didn’t move a single muscle. He didn’t drop his stance, nor did he even bother to reach for the copper-wired hilt of his newly sheathed Blood Blade beneath his cloak. He was running on a miserable twelve points of total energy, and his body was physically battered, but his psychological leverage was absolute. He simply leaned his shoulders back slightly against the frame of an architectural pillar, his dark, deeply cynical smile hidden perfectly behind the frayed fabric of his crimson scarf.
"Lieutenant Colton explicitly violated the safe-zone parameters and the terms of our active treaty the exact millisecond he utilized a high-tier stealth shroud to stalk us directly into a locked boss instance," Sky said smoothly, his gravelly, raspy voice remaining completely cool, analytical, and entirely devoid of human fear. He spoke as if he were presenting a routine data analysis rather than navigating a firing squad. "He didn’t die because of any offensive action on our end, Commander. He died because he was an arrogant, shortsighted amateur who completely failed to check the structural floor parameters before positioning himself under an active sentinel."
Sky’s dark eyes narrowed through the slits of his hood, locking directly onto the Paladin’s face.
"If you truly want to avenge the incompetent hitman you secretly sent down to steal our hard-earned loot, go right ahead and swing your golden sword," Sky continued, his tone dripping with a quiet, lethal contempt.
He paused, letting the silence of the room stretch to maximize the weight of his next words. "But you’ll be doing it over the permanent, irreversible ashes of the only compiled blueprint data drive that can save your elite vanguard knights from a power grid collapse back in the Central Sleep Cages. We clear the room, or we all rot together. Do the math, Arthur."
"But..." Arthur stammered for a split second, the raw mathematical truth of Sky’s statement slamming into his operational logic. His expression darkened to a shade of pure slate as his authority fractured in front of his men. He turned his gaze away from the assassin, his eyes tracking the silent, dangerous presence of the rogue priestess standing beside him."What exactly are you going to do about this situation, Vesper?"
Vesper slowly turned her head toward him, her long silver hair catching the erratic, amber firelight of the lodge.
Their eyes locked in a silent, suffocating clash of wills. For a long, agonized moment, neither high-tier player spoke a single syllable, the tension in the room growing so dense that even the crackling of the firewood seemed to fade into nothingness
.
Then, Vesper’s serene expression hardened into something sharp, ancient, and terrifyingly absolute.
"Looks like I have tolerated your loud, bureaucratic nuisance for far too long, Arthur," Vesper stated flatly, her smooth voice carrying a chilling resonance that cut straight through the Commander’s burning aura.
Sky let out a low, raspy chuckle from the shadows of his hood . His voice carried a faint, genuine edge of dark amusement, though his eyes remained as cold as the glacial ice they had just barely escaped.
"Seems like your sweet sister has finally lost her absolute baseline patience with your theater, Commander," Sky murmured, tilting his head slightly to mock the giant.
Arthur’s head slowly, methodically turned back toward Sky, his face contorted in a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred as the assassin’s words twisted the knife in his authority. Sky merely shrugged his shoulders in response, his loose, unbothered posture broadcasting a singular, simple declaration to the entire Vanguard Order: I don’t care about your numbers, your titles, or your legion.
Arthur’s massive grip on the gold-rimmed edge of his tower shield tightened to a critical threshold, the heavy iron plates groaning and warping slightly beneath the sheer, unnatural output of his physical strength metrics. For a single, terrifying heartbeat, it looked as though his restraint was going to snap entirely, and he was about to give his knights the definitive order to strike them down.
Then, Vesper took a single, deliberate step forward.
She didn’t raise her newly evolved Sacred Light-Saber from its white carbon-fiber sheath. She didn’t reach for her hidden steel blade, nor did she channel a single drop of her remaining mana into a visible matrix She didn’t need to.
She simply looked Arthur dead in the eyes, her piercing, unreadable gray gaze carrying an ancient, systemic weight that made even the battle-hardened veteran Paladin instinctively hesitate and take a fractional half-step back onto the hardwood floor. The absolute conviction radiating from her form was a boundary line that no amount of vanguard iron could cross.
"You know exactly who I am, Arthur," Vesper said, her calm voice falling over the silent room like a sharp knife.
She stood perfectly still, her stature effortlessly dominating the space between the knights and the portal. "You know what I am capable of when the constraints are removed. Do not mistake my temporary patience for structural weakness, or I will dismantle your sanctuary before the next transmission even begins.
