Space Odyssey: Spectre

Chapter 689: Flipped Gravity

He tore open the door and walked into the level. The moment he did he understood why he was getting confusing results. He came out and faced a massive wall of reinforced glass that showed the dark depths of an ocean. He could just make out several creatures moving around in the water because of the glow some of them were giving off.

As for the separate rooms. He could already tell they were just underwater tunnels that led further into the water and away from the rock face he was standing near that seemed to reach deep underground. "Okay…" He spoke aloud and a moment later he heard a noise.

It sounded like cracking and creaking. He sighed as he looked toward the source which was behind a few tables that were covered in moss that was glowing green. "I am starting to wish I didn't drop my flashlight."

"Click! Click! Click!" He frowned as he could hear the sound of clicking like someone was snapping their tongue and then a hunched over figure covered in moss moved out from behind the desk.

Although it would be more accurate to state the moss was infesting it. Or maybe them because what he saw was not a creature but the bones of a creature. One that looked like a smaller version of the skeleton he saw on the upper floor. "Okay… so what are you?" Jace slowly pulled his knife and tried to materialize his revolver but felt something block it. "Glad I kept one weapon out." He remarked aloud as the creature's head twisted.

"Click! Click! Click!" It clicked towards him again and then raised its head up into the air. "Kaw! Kaw!"

Jace frowned until he could hear the sound of more clicking, creaking, and cracking down the underwater tunnels. While just outside in the water the undersea creatures all swam away, almost instinctively. "Well that is curious." He remarked as he flipped his knife in his hand and then leaped forward.

The creature did not have time to react as Jace sliced through what was once its neck but was now connected by moss. The head fell clean off and onto the ground. Although it still was glowing which should have given away what happened next as one of its arm claws slashed out.

"Ow!" Jace jumped back as a shallow cut appeared on the back of one of his hands. He looked at the cut and frowned as he could feel something sapping the electricity from his body while some green moss started to cover the wound. "Zombie moss?" He hummed and sent a surge of electricity through his hand.

The electricity surged to his hand and the moss caught fire and released a blue flame before it disappeared along with whatever bacteria was trying to sap his life force.

[Attempted attack by hostile micro bacteria. Suggested solution: electro-nano pulse? Y/N]

"No, that is fine." Jace sent out a pulse of electricity through the floor and into the nearby grouping of glowing moss. It caught fire and sent out a blue flame. As soon as that happened he could hear the sound of the clicking and creaking of the bone moss creatures moving further down the tunnels. "But I do think I am done on this floor." He remarked as he moved back to the elevator door and sent a pulse of electricity down further into the elevator shaft. Finding the shaft went down another mile before ending in an open area. There were plenty more floors between here and there but only one other open area.

He jumped and bounced from wall to wall. But as he got lower he spotted a blinking light that was on what looked like a ground. He stopped at a wall for a moment to take a closer look before jumping down. But a moment after he did the ledge he was on gave way and he fell down and landed on a crushed piece of metal. After a moment he realized it was the elevator that fell earlier.

He tapped his foot against it and it bounced like it was on water but as he looked over the side it was clear the shaft went deeper. "That is weird." He remarked before looking at the elevator door. He moved over and pulled it open. This time it was just a large open space with a few desks here and there. But as soon as he stepped onto it he noticed the anomaly.

His electricity spread out over an entire area. "That is even more weird." He crouched down and put his hand on the ground. Or actually it would be more accurate to call it a massive gear. It was made of something that could easily channel electricity but the size was extraordinary.

In fact it was so solid that he doubted they mined through the giant gear. Instead the elevator shaft went through an open slot that is in the center of the gear. He moved back and looked down the elevator shaft. The elevator and his flashlight crashed into something that was making it float in the air.

He tapped his ear piece. "Officer P'lice, you would not happen to hear me would you? If you do, then this planet is odder than it appears and a full hazmat team is needed for this place." Jace instructed before pulling the rope off his body and tying off part of it to a bolted piece of metal that looked stable enough.

He tied the other end to his body. Then he crouched at the edge and dipped a hand past the pulverized elevator. Flinching as he understood what happened to the elevator. It fell until it hit a flip and then the reverse force of the opposing gravity would crush the box into a pancake.

Jace sighed as he sheathed his knife that he had out just in case and climbed past the crushed elevator and into the opposing gravity. Floating for a moment before gravity flipped and he was climbing upside down. "Oof…" He let out a grunt as his stomach lurched. He turned and started climbing right side up. And continued until the rope went taunt and then moved the rope to a stable piece of metal before climbing again.

He could sense a few working electronics in the direction he was now climbing. He could still see plenty of glowing moss but they were in the same direction. As he made his way upward he could hear the faint sound of roars and other creatures in the distance. He probably could have heard it on the other side but it seemed like whatever gravity barrier was happening was keeping out sound.

As he climbed he moved past a few floors but these ones were completely different then the other ones he came across. They were not full of computer rooms. Instead they were bunk beds and living spaces. As he got near the top he could see light coming in from the top.

But he stopped and opened the elevator door a few floors just below the top opening. It was one of the last spots he could find active electronics. As he moved through the floor he climbed over some stacks of sandbags and past several weapons that had clearly been set up. Although there were not any bodies on this floor that was likely an armory at some point with how many weapons and explosives were stored around this floor.

They were not modern weapons. They were ancient plasma grenades and electro magnetic pulse grenades for explosives. Then there were the laser pistols, laser rifles and laser machine guns. All of them utilized electricity but all of them had sat for too long, so the charge had disappeared.

He found the source of the existing electricity was coming from a communication panel. There was glowing green moss in the room but it was clearly avoiding the active panel, likely too much charge in the panel for the moss to absorb without catching on fire. He touched the panel to see where the electricity was coming from and found it was hooked up to a wind and water turbine located somewhere further up outside of the underground bunker.

He pulled out his hacking device and attached a remote connection to the panel. Then he opened up the programming language and found no information. It just connected to other panels that were located throughout the bunker. There was no other information attached to the digital network.

Seems he would not be getting much in the form of digital information. Although he had already confirmed that this place was at least inhabited by the original colonists that came to this galaxy. Those laser weapons that he saw earlier matched what the original colonists had. He knew weapons and had looked into them before. They had issues with power and with the weapons melting their own wiring so they would stop working.
