Spider-Trinity: Reborn Into Marvel Universe
Chapter 156: Recovering Logan’s MemoriesUpon entering his personal laboratory, Peter told Logan to sit in a different chair from the one he had used before.
"Okay. With the chip ready, we can start this. It will be something similar to Inception." He placed a helmet connected to a machine over Logan’s head.
"What?"
"Nothing. The chip I implanted earlier will help us access your memories. Once we enter your mind, everything will seem like a dream until I find you. After that, I will begin repairing the damage."
"I thought it was supposed to stop telepaths from getting into my head."
"Aside from allowing you to decide when someone enters your mind and what you want them to see, the device will help us enormously here. Do not worry. The only way someone can enter your mind through the chip is if you are connected to this machine," Peter said while adjusting the helmet. "So, sweet dreams."
After turning on the machine, Logan fell asleep. Sitting down on the other side, Peter put on his own helmet and activated the connection. Almost instantly, he lost consciousness.
When he opened his eyes again, he turned and saw Logan beside him, who also opened his eyes and looked around.
"It did not work."
"Strange. According to my calculations, we should be inside your mind." Peter frowned. "Well, I will have to recalculate some algorithms. In the meantime, do you want a beer?"
"I will never say no to one of those," Logan said as he sat down on the sofa and stretched his legs across the coffee table in front of him. He turned on the television to watch a football game, put a hand into his pocket, took out a cigar and lighter, lit it, took a drag, and exhaled the smoke.
"Here you go." Peter handed Logan a beer and sat down on a single sofa across from him, quietly watching him.
"What is it? Why are you looking at me like that?" Logan asked while taking a sip of his beer and smoking his cigar.
"They say we only use a fraction of the brain’s full potential while awake, but when we sleep, the mind can do almost anything," Peter said as he took a notebook and pencil from his pocket.
"What are you trying to say, bub?" Logan straightened slightly in his chair, finished his beer, and took another drag from his cigar. When he finished the bottle, he gestured toward the side, and another beer was brought over by a man neither of them had acknowledged until now.
"Imagine you are designing a building. You consciously create every detail, every room, every corridor, but sometimes it feels as though parts of it create themselves."
"What do you mean? That I am discovering parts of something I created?"
"That is right. That is genuine inspiration. But in dreams, the mind does it constantly. We perceive and create our own world simultaneously," Peter explained while placing the notebook on the table and showing it to Logan. "And the mind makes it so real that we do not even realize what is happening. That is what allows us to exist in the middle of it."
He said this while finishing the drawing.
"What?" Logan asked, this being one of the few times he was genuinely interested in something.
"As long as we take care of the creative part, that is where you and I come in. You create the dream world, where all your nightmares, fears, insecurities, and memories reside. The machine allows me to bring you into that place so your subconscious can fill it with the information we are looking for."
"And how does it create so many details? And how do I know I am in a dream? Because, well, I am sorry to tell you, but my mind is a mess, and I doubt I could do all this myself."
"Dreams feel real while we are inside them. It is only after waking up that we realize something was wrong. Let me ask you something. You never remember the beginning of a dream, correct? You always seem to appear right in the middle of the action."
"Yes."
"Then answer one question. How did we get here?"
"We just came here after...."
Logan stopped.
"Think, Logan. Think. How did we get here?" Peter said.
Logan looked around. The room suddenly seemed less familiar. He looked at the television, then at the man who had brought him another beer. He felt as though he knew this place, yet at the same time, he realized he had never seen it before.
"Where are we now?" Peter asked.
"The machine.... It worked?" Logan said, making Peter smile.
"That is right. We are in the Cave, sleeping right now."
Upon hearing this, Logan immediately left the room and stepped outside. Instead of the Cave, he found himself in the middle of New York at night, surrounded by glowing billboards, massive displays, moving traffic, and crowds of people walking from one place to another.
As Logan stared at everything, the world suddenly began to shake as though caught in an earthquake. The screens exploded, cracks spread across the sky, and fractures tore through the ground. Seeing what was happening, Peter placed a hand on Logan’s shoulder and forced him to look at him.
"Calm down. Close your eyes and breathe. If you lose control, you will destabilize the entire world."
Logan took several deep breaths, and little by little the world calmed down. The cracks disappeared, the screens repaired themselves, and the people continued moving as though nothing had happened.
"Who are all these people?"
"My creations. Projections of my mind. Even though they come from me, you are the dreamer, Logan. You can cause an apocalypse here if you want, but I recommend you refrain from doing so. If you experience pain here, your brain may carry part of that sensation with you when you wake up. And I tell you, I am not a fan of waking up after being hit by a missile or shot in the head."
Logan grimaced, though a small smile accompanied it.
"How do we fix my problem?"
"Imagine a place where you feel safe. Somewhere you can rest and feel at peace."
Logan looked at him for a few seconds before walking away quickly. Peter followed.
They moved down the street, avoiding several projections until they reached a store. Upon entering, they found it completely empty except for a beer and a cigar resting on a table. Logan approached, drank the entire beer, then picked up the cigar and took a puff.
"Why can I taste it if all of this is a dream?"
"Because you have repeated those actions so many times that your mind remembers every detail. The taste, the smell, the burning sensation, the movement of your muscles. Your brain can recreate the experience so accurately that, inside a dream, you cannot easily distinguish it from reality."
"Impressive."
"But I should warn you that losing yourself inside a dream is one of the most dangerous things that can happen. If you stay too long or lose your ability to distinguish reality from imagination, waking up will not necessarily solve the problem. You may begin questioning whether you are still dreaming."
Logan’s expression became more serious.
"If you watch the person you love most die in a dream, it only takes a thought to bring them back. Reality does not work that way. If your mind becomes accustomed to rewriting everything you cannot accept, you risk fragmenting your perception until you completely lose yourself."
Logan nodded, understanding that dreams were not entirely pleasant. Without proper precautions, they could also be incredibly dangerous.
He placed the empty glass on the table and walked toward a door. The moment he opened it, the entire scene changed.
Peter followed, but what appeared on the other side made him grimace. When he recognized one of the people present, his eyes widened slightly.
’Well. This is unexpected.’
Peter immediately looked away and continued following Logan, who kept changing directions. Sometimes they passed through doors, other times through alleys, hotels, houses, and places that seemed to have no logical connection to one another, until they eventually reached a white oak door.
When Logan opened it, Peter realized they were inside Xavier’s mansion.
’I should have guessed.’
He followed Logan upstairs. They walked through the corridor until they reached a door that did not match the mansion’s aesthetic. It was completely different from everything around it.
"Where does this door lead?"
"I am asking myself the same question, bub."
When Logan opened it, they went from Xavier’s mansion to a house that Logan clearly recognized.
"This place...." Logan looked around slowly. "I feel like I know it, but there is something...."
"Well, my savage friend. This is where your life begins."
"What?"
"You recognize this place, but at the same time you do not. That is an indication that we are close to the source of your problem. But from this point onward, this is your journey."
"Are you not coming?"
"And waking up with memories that are not mine? No thanks."
Peter sat down in a nearby chair and picked up the cup of coffee resting on the table in front of him.
"Go and find what you have been longing for."
"Thank you."
Logan turned around and walked away. As he reached a certain point, it was as though he disappeared through a false wall.
"Okay," Peter muttered.
He moved part of the table aside, revealing a digital panel underneath. When he placed his hand on it, glowing streaks spread across almost the entire surface.
"This will fill the gaps in Logan’s mind with the relevant context. Now I just have to let him connect the dots. Once he recovers enough memories, the rest should happen automatically."
Peter stared at the wall for a few seconds before the entire environment suddenly changed. The house disappeared, replaced by a landscape covered in snow, and directly in front of him stood a bunker.
Peter grimaced and slowly shook his head.
"I hope the people responsible are ready once Logan gets his memories back. But the biggest problem is what he will do when he finds out about Laura."
He took another sip of his coffee while staring at the bunker.
"I wonder which version she will be."
